State track and field (Day 2): Capital boys, Eagle girls win state titles

NOTE: I apologize for the lack of entries, but the busy schedule of the 5A and 4A finals Friday night forced me to focus on the three stories I was working on for Saturday's paper. I had to sacrifice the blog. Sorry.

Anyway, enough apologizing. Capital's boys and Eagle's girls emerged with team championships at the 5A meet.

Capital was led by Geraldo Hiwat, who won the 200 and long jump, and the Eagles picked up their first state championship since 1985. Liz Brandon led Eagle with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 to guide the Mustangs to their first girls title since 2002.

Read the Statesman in print or online tomorrow for the complete story.

Bolin begins distance defense with win

The second day of the state track and field championship meet got off to a strong start for Treasure Valley teams as Payette senior Dominic Bolin won the 3A boys 3,200 in 9:46.89 to begin his attempt of a second straight sweep of the three distance events (800, 1,600 and 3,200). Bolin held of Weiser's Ryan Jaggi (9:47.95) to win the event.

Bolin isn't Payette's only winner so far. Senior thrower Tyler Kuder won the boys shot put (49-11) and discus (156-0).

Also in the 3A boys meet, Homedale's Austin Emry successfully defended his title in the long jump (20-10.75).

Nampa Christian's Nederend wins second title

Nampa Christian senior James Nederend picked up a victory in the 2A boys high jump (6-2) to add to his championship in the triple jump (43-11.75) Thursday.
