State track and field (Day 1): Covington, Brandon set all-class records
Jumping on an injured right ankle that required a medical hardship to gain entry into the 5A state meet, Capital's Kasen Covington needed only two attempts to establish an overall state record.
The junior jumped a little further than 46 feet on his first attempt leading with his other foot, but didn't feel comfortable and jumped 49-2 on his second attempt using his usual lead foot. That mark easily surpassed the old state meet record of 47-10.25 set in 1990 by Middleton's Erik Brewington and tied in 2007 by Mountain View's Tyler Evans.
After he broke the record, Covington pulled himself out of the competition and didn't jump in the finals to avoid injuring his ankle futher. The back-to-back state triple jump champion with compete in the long jump and 4x100 relay on Friday.
Eagle's Liz Brandon wins 3,200 in record time
Eagle distance runner Liz Brandon claimed her first 5A track and field state championship and did it in record fashion.
The junior roared past defending champion Nicole Nielsen with one lap to go and pulled away to win in 10 minutes, 51.28 seconds, breaking the old record of 10:55.19 (Angie Mathison, Highland, 1993).
Mountain View girls, Boise boys win 4x800 relays
Two other state records were established Thursday as Mountain View's girls and Boise's boys picked up the first ever victories in the 4x800, which is being debuted in the 5A state meet this season.
The Braves won the boys race in 7:48.61 seconds, which ranks 13th in the U.S. The Mavericks won the girls race in 9:26.79, which ranks 42nd nationally.
