It looks like Toledo will bail on football game with Boise State; could Mississippi be the replacement?

Boise State has a road football game scheduled against a MAC team this season, so it must be time to cue the circus music.

Reports out of Colorado say a deal is imminent that will set up a Colorado-Toledo game on Sept. 11 in Toledo. That’s the weekend that Boise State is scheduled to play at Toledo.

The game is a replacement for Colorado’s game at Miami of Ohio, which is bailing to play Kentucky in Cincinnati.

So now Boise State has a hole to fill — and the early speculation is on a trip to Mississippi of the SEC and a date with former Broncos coach Houston Nutt. Mississippi and Rutgers were options for Colorado, according to the Boulder Daily Camera, so it stands to reason they will be options for the Broncos.

In the worst case, the Broncos could just play 12 games. They have 13 scheduled including Toledo.

If this all sounds familiar, it should.

In 2006, Bowling Green pulled out of a home game against Boise State — a decision that led to the Broncos’ four-year contract with Utah.

And in 2007, Bowling Green did it again — leaving the Broncos with 12 games instead of 13. Plus, the MAC backed out of obligations to provide Boise State an unnamed opponent in 2007.

Miami is scheduled to play in Boise this year. Toledo is scheduled to play here next year. Boise State goes to Miami next year. Bowling Green is back on the schedule in 2011 (there) and 2012 (here).

I asked Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier two years ago whether he was concerned about those games.

“I have contracts with those schools, so those should not get messed up," Bleymaier said then. "... Anything can happen, but I don't anticipate those games changing."

I’ll try to get an update from Bleymaier Tuesday.

Apparently, Boise State is not the only school that has been getting jerked around. ESPN.com blogger Graham Watson reports that some schools refuse to schedule MAC teams.

“The conference is … facing ridicule from other conferences that have been dismayed by the MAC’s scheduling problems,” Watson wrote Monday.

Rutgers?

Hopefully Rutgers is a possible destination as well. Ole Miss would be a handfull.

I Love the Broncos ...

But I hate Bleymaier's scheduling philosophy. STOP SCHEDULING MAC AND FCS SCHOOLS! At a certain point, Boise State needs to start thinking about credibility and opponents like Toledo, Miami, and Cal Davis are not helping.

Agree with...

Lakecitybronco that Bleymaier needs to start scheduling legitimate opponents ONLY in conferences compatible or better than the WAC. I would like to see at least 2 MWC teams and 1 PAC-10 team every season. He could even try to get an ACC team, considering we're as good as they are (if not better).

Maybe they could...

Maybe they could extend themselves and play a "real" team like Centennial High! This would give them as much competition as the other teams on their schedule and in their conference. I have an idea, how about going on the road and playing a Big Ten, Big Twelve, or SEC school. Maybe play a little competition so that the rest of the nation takes BSU seriously.

Wake up folks....

...scheduling is not as easy as it looks. Nobody wants to play Boise on the count of the fact that those programs are all at the point where they have nothing to gain from a win against the Broncos. You think Oregon would have really gained anything if they defeated a Boise St. team that they were SUPPOSED to defeat? No way. The SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 schools don't want to have anything to do with us (I know, we played at Georgia a few years back, but that is only one game). Why do you think the Ducks initially wanted to relocate their trip to Boise over to China? The big boys are afraid of Bleymaier's home-and-home philosophy because they are afraid of the blue turf. Another thing: Alabama managed to get a home-and-home with Hawaii, because Hawaii is paradise. Texas Tech managed to get a home-and-home with Nevada because Reno is a very nice place to visit. But nobody wants anything to do with Boise because they are afraid of the blue turf and also because the state of Idaho is one of the least popular states in the country, maybe even the least popular. It's never easy to schedule anyone when no one wants to play you, especially when all of those programs expect a national championship every year, and that's why they schedule cupcakes every year. Fresno St. may do it, but they have taken it a bit too far, and their lack of performance against WAC foes on an annual basis proves it. You people need to understand that you can only get what you can get. Nothing is easy.

WELL SAID racismsux!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bigger teams will play home and home with BSU when Bronco Stadium holds 45,000+. Until then scheduling is a very tough order and Bleymaier is in a no win situation...

Lose the MAC!!!!

I know it is not easy to make a schedule for Boise State, few teams want to play on the "Blue Turf", but obviously it would be in Gene's best interest to work on an alternative to the upcoming MAC games on the schedule. He has a much better chance of scheduling a comperable or better team now than if he waits for the MAC to cancel at the last minute. Schedule someone else now and dump the MAC, they don't deserve to play Boise State. If they keep this up they won't get to play anyone but their own conference, the MAC's scheduling practices are absolutely unacceptable!

weak...

that will be the team Gene will schedule as a replacement

Stadium Size is not the Issue it is GB

Miami of Ohio's stadium seats 30,012, which was lined up with Colorado for a one and one. Ball State has a seating capacity of just 21,581 and they had Boston College for a one and one. Step up and play the big boys BSU! BSU is no longer a J.C. I hope BSU plays Ole Miss in Oxford and Ole Miss returns to Boise just like they have done with Wyoming and will with Fresno State.

Blue Turf?

Do BSU homers really think that people are afraid to play BSU on their "Blue Turf"? I don't think the big programs cares where they would play BSU because they are confident enough to beat them anywhere.

The issue is abotu money. The fact is Bronco stadium is small at 35,000 seats. If BSU were to go on the road and play at Michigan's Big House at 110,000 seats Michigan could pay for BSU's travel and give them $500,000 for the trip and still make more money than if Michigan travelled to play at BSU. At $30/ticket the difference is over $2 million.

No high level program is afraid to play at BSU, they just don't want to lose the money of traveling to BSU when they could play the game in a much larger stadium. This is why the BSU AD is having difficulties with scheduling. He wants to play teams that are poor competition so that he has a better record. Previously, this would better their chances of getting into a BCS game. This is not the case now. Unfortunately, to play better schools BSU will likely have to go on the road more and likely lose more frequently.

Take a closer look.

I never said anyone was afraid to play on the "Blue Turf", I said they don't WANT to. The big schools have no interest in playing at BSU. You should read more carefully before you throw a tantrum.

the truth

Thank god someone has brains on this board.Yeah a Florida team has no problem going to LSU,Tennessee,Georgia stadiums(some of the toughest to play ) but they are scared to come to Boise please people get real.

Cupcakes anybody?

BSU is a good team! The Broncos are 4-10 vs. ranked teams since moving up to Division I-A in 1996. Teams like USC, LSU, Florida, Texas etc. are too scared to play on the barf blue. Roady's Hum Bowl Forever Donk's!

You guys are freaking stupid

Does anyone in here know how to read? Nobody said they were scared! They are not interested, and GB does nothing to change that. Maybe Boise is too far to travel for what the big boys back east see as a warmup, and the PAC-10 is simply not interested. I don't know what it is but I don't think GB tries hard enough, and I don't think anybody is SCARED!

Do we play Utah State, for crying out loud? Forget this crap.
