Taiwan government may pick Micron to help consolidate nation's memory-chip sector
Boise’s Micron Technology may be picked by the government of Taiwan to take part in consolidating the island nation’s memory-chip industry, Dow Jones Newswires reported Thursday.
Taiwan plans to select either a group led by Micron or a group led by Elpida Memory Inc. of Japan to lead the consolidation, according to the news report from Taipei.
Micron, the only U.S. producer of dynamic random-access memory, is counting on its technological prowess to win the contest. Micron Chairman Steve Appleton has said repeatedly that the industry must consolidate and that Micron is well-positioned to be among the survivors. The entire industry has suffered for years from low prices caused by a persistent oversupply of chips, and the recession has dimmed prospects for recovery soon.

Micron's (absolutely, positively) last gasp
As of today, this looks very much still up in the air. They're bleeding hundreds of millions a quarter, Gartner says the worldwide PC/chip industry "will experience its sharpest shipment decline in history"....and racetrack memory technology is about to burst forth. The dollar continues to strengthen, working against their US mfg capacity, and Idaho's bozo-billy-bob-boob state government has been utterly clueless for 5 + years with any kind of 'Micron replacement strategy' (not counting pompous Roger Madsen's "C-3" scheme: cow manure, cheese plants, and call centers).
Here's a newsflash you won't hear in Happy-Church: MICRON COULD EASILY GO BUSTED IF THE TAIWANESE REJECT THEIR ACT OF DESPERATION, or they could survive...but over there 70-80%.
