Bill would expand harassment law to include Internet social networking sites

Beware foreignoregonian!

A bill by Rep. Stephen Hartgen, R-Twin Falls, would expand the state's harassment law to include e-mail and Internet postings. The bill is in response to the infamous MySpace case, which led the suicide of a teen-age girl in Missouri.

Currently the law includes telephone harassment.

The House State Affairs Committee unanimously voted to print the bill after some debate about First Amendment issues, e-mail spam and some concern about the bill being too broad. The bill included specific language about MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Twitter and personal blogs before being changed.

No one, however, was able to come up with the more generic term of "social network sites" until 34-year-old Brent Crane, R-Nampa, saved the day. Crane later said he is on Facebook and it is a good way to communicate with constituents.

Hartgen said the law is designed to target one-on-one contact rather than mass communication.

You can block anyone from myspace or facebook

my space and facebook profiles allow you to block access to your page from anyone but friends or people you have chosen...I think the law is good, but if anyone suffering from this dilemma needs to know, they have that option.

This state

is about to go belly-up financially and all the legislature is concerned about is expanding the harrassment law? Idaho Code 18-7902 already covers these acts.
How about an early adjournment, saving the state more money and wasted time.

Early adjournment

I don't think they are on a time clock. I think they get paid, regardless.

they get a per diem

but yes, the salary is the same

Stop It

So this could be a social network site...

*******
Isn't Hartgen the same person who is against anonymous posters and bloggers on the net, as well?

He must really have a misplaced stick!

"Beware foreignoregonian!" ???

Wow - are you intimidated by one of our favorite forum followers?

Who is in charge of the madhouse?

The legislature of course: the patients are always in charge.

I can't even type well. Who makes me Napolean?

From the ashes of Bill Sali...a new crazy Phoenix arises. Gee.

When is this guy going to figure out that he has no jurisdiction over this?

Is Twin Falls predisposed to this weirdness? Something about jumping from bridges?

Legislative Action

go4it, the budgets have to be set and presented to each chamber before they can be voted on. JFAC is still working on them. ALL the department budgets have to be set before they can be presented. In fact, the budgets are among the last items voted on each year. There are always going to be other things to deal with prior to that.

This was an antisocial network once, but not a MySpace...

And YES, foreignoregonian's being here was a huge part of reigning it in.

Who was in there trying to show you how to cope with the new Pluck platforms once he got over it himself?

Sarcasm gets you to think after it stings or it's only hate.

If some rancorous shouting down hadn't occured there would be a REAL CHANCE that this commenting system would've FAILED MISERABLY. Don Day at channel seven was/is contantly anti-newspaper to the point of drooling and if you had to deal with it over at Idaho Radio News...

And you don't now. His spirit is semi-broken anyway and I can only hope the rabid insanity for ratings/yellow journalism at KTVB era is DONE. They couldn't even get "The Big 8" right and this ISN'T Detroit/London-Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Things are better. I'm not anybodies' savior either. I'm a follower/enthusiast/whatever. I happen to like this odd correspondence course. Some people actually like ME? So be it, but stop using me for some kind of example, Statesman editors. I don't rank with gay scandals and god would know what (if god were personified). Scandalous gay folks need friends too and I like plenty of those too.

Lack of knowledge

It is evident some legislators could use a bit of knowledge about the internet. What a waste of government time at citizens' expense.
