Capitol restoration, expansion "on time and on budget"
The expansion and restoration of the Idaho Capitol building is “on time and on budget,” Rep. Stephen Hartgen, R-Twin Falls, told the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee Wednesday morning.
The project’s price tag is slightly more than $120 million, “some $10 million less than the original bonding authority,” Hartgen said.
Hartgen, acting chair of the Idaho Capitol Commission, showed off a wood bowl crafted from an original Ash tree removed from the statehouse grounds to make room for the expansion. About 50 artisans from around the state are crafting desks, chairs and other items for the building all made from trees removed from the Capitol grounds.
The expansion added two 25,000-square-foot underground wings new meeting rooms, offices, public arcades and hearing rooms.
“Walls are being painted and carpet is on the way,” Hartgen said. “House desks arrive today. Marble is installed on the fourth floor and lighting is being installed.”
Hartgen said the Capitol Commission is looking at a Nov. 19 turnover date to give the building back to lawmakers and staff.
That date “will give us approximately a month and a half to get everything ready for the 2010 session,” he said.

Capitol restoration
Boy! It's sure nice Idaho has the money to spend on this makeover, maybe we can lay off some more state employees or cut some more services, so we can get the landscaping done that they destroyed!
Your suggestion will hurt Idahoans and Idaho Schools
Its my understanding, the state has already bonded for the restoration. They have already BORROWED the money!! Are you suggesting that they not make the payments? Do you understand that would hurt Idaho's credit rating and cost all of us more in taxes as we pay more in interest?!?! The payments I beleive are being paid out of the increase in cigarete tax a few years ago.
Restoration Funds
Bobwhite1x, the funds are dedicated funds. They can't be shifted around. You need to do a bit of research before posting something that makes you look silly.
Restoration
I was all for restoring the place but they expanded it. As far as I'm concerned the legislature should meet in a horse barn in the dessert.
I would never put a horse barn in my dessert
That would just taste awful. I might consider putting a horse barn in the desert, as long as it had a good water source.
Truth is hard to come by
That would smash your Oreos for sure.

This was the apparently ONE RIGHT THING Kempthorne did, eh?
It was his idea, correct?

expanding online hearings
I do hope they continue the plan to wire all the committee rooms so that people can watch hearings through the Internet.
That would be like C-Span without book reviews.
