Petersen not going to Mississippi State

Statement from Petersen

After a day of speculation, rumors and Internet reports, Boise State coach Chris Petersen felt compelled to issue a statement about the Mississippi State coaching position.

Boise State released this statement from Petersen on Friday night:

"I have a lot of respect for director of athletics Greg Byrne and the Mississippi State athletic program, but I am not taking the head coaching position at Mississippi State.

"Mississippi State has not offered me the head coaching position. I normally do not comment on coaching positions at other schools, but felt I needed to do so in this situation.

"We are very happy here at Boise State and look forward to our upcoming bowl game later this month."

Rumor Mill

UPDATE 4:49 p.m.: The Associated Press out of Mississippi is confirming that interviews have begun in the Mississippi State coaching search.

UPDATE 4:45 p.m.: Today's Channel 6 (KIVI) is reporting that Boise State coach Chris Petersen has been offered a four-year, $9 million contract to coach Mississippi State.

Four years is apparently the longest contract that can be offered in Mississippi.

That is $2.5 million per season, more than double Petersen's current salary for 2009 at Boise State.

UPDATE: This blog calls Boise State's Chris Petersen to Mississippi State a done deal.

The coaching rumor mill keeps spinning for Boise State coach Chris Petersen.

Yesterday, it was Petersen to Washington. Today, it’s Petersen to Mississippi State. Tomorrow, I’m sure it will be Petersen to Syracuse or Auburn or Miami of Ohio.

I’ve gotten at least two calls from folks in Mississippi claiming that Petersen to Mississippi State is currently the hottest topic going in the state.

This is despite Petersen’s comments to the Clarion-Ledger regarding his interest in the position. Petersen and Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne are close fiends, dating back to their time together at Oregon.

“Greg and I have been friends for a long time. We talk often. He knows how happy we are in Boise and that’s where we’re going to be,” Petersen told the newspaper.

Petersen told the Statesman’s Chadd Cripe that he was not interested in leaving Boise after the Broncos’ 61-10 victory against Fresno State in the regular-season finale on Friday.

“Like we’ve been telling our recruits and everybody, we think this is a special place, we really do. We’re just excited about what’s happened here and the future plans,” Petersen told the Statesman.

“I don’t know how to say this because I’m not going to be put in this box, but I’m not planning on going…. We just feel very confident that this is a great place, we like being here, we’re recruiting very good players here and we feel confident we’ll be here for hopefully a long time.”

Petersen is 35-3 as the Broncos’ head coach — the main reason his name is mentioned every time there is an opening around the country.

Petersen, who was on the road recruiting earlier this week, is back in Boise and working in the office, a Boise State spokesman said. Petersen is not interested in talking about any of the job speculation and he plans on being on the road recruiting next week, the spokesman said.

Petersen has three years remaining on a five-year contract he signed in 2007. He will make more than $1.1 million next season.

Petersen said Friday there are no current talks about a new contract or a contract extension, but said he would like to extend the contract.

Oregon on the blue

According to Rob Moseley’s excellent Oregon Ducks blog, the Ducks are committed to playing Boise State in Boise next season.

Will the game be the biggest game in Bronco Stadium history?

Horra

I hope he met them for shiz and giggles and not nothing more.

UPDATE

Found this: http://www.kivitv.com/Global/story.asp?S=9467129

That could suck. Scratch that. It does suck.

SO

now the question will be does he want to take the deal ugggggggggggg

Coaching is a business

Murphy what’s up with you and these rumors? Are you running out of story lines, and as such, needing to stir the kettle? If you really were a Bronco fan you would knock this crap off. Pete does not need these things being said. The players don't need to read this stuff either, especially before a big game. Tell us something that is true that we could not guess on our own. If you can't why don't you move on.

dude

its not rumors...go to kivitv.com. The blogger that he cited was the first to report kiffin to Tennessee and was right.

That would be dude et to you

The Moron that "sparky'd" that rumor got it right once and now he is legit? Get back! The most of these blog sites are pathetic. I am here as a fan to the Bronco's and nothing more. There are some cool people on this blog (but they are true fans) they do not go on and on with this junk. Murph must go home at night and laugh about all this crap. That's ok its about his speed

SWEET!

Are you Ashton Kutcher disguised as a Bronco fan? No but seriously.....anyone and I mean anyone, could have predicted Kiffin to Tennessee. They wanted a young offensive minded coach. Predicting that hire didnt take a genious.

The Article is highlighted "Rumor Mill"

So since we're at it: Even though Notre Dame has said that Charlie Weis is staying put this rumor states that Notre Dame is letting Weis out of his contract so he can coach the Idaho Vandulls. It is reported that Weis will make $99,999.99 a year for 35 years and all the beer he can drink at the Corner Bar. In a statement made to this blogger Weis said "I really covet the idea of coaching a football team inside a quonset hut".

New Contract

Time to get Pete a new contract.

Clearly Boise cannot offer 2.25.

But they can probrably up it to about 1.5-1.75.

With all that he has said over the last two years i just cant see him in the SEC.

BLOG BLOG BLOG BLOG

That is what that is a BLOG,

Big whoop

Coach Pete, If you stay, great... if you don't, oh well. We've lost better coaches then you in the past, and we always seem to get another great one. There must be something in the water at BSU, no matter who they hire, they go on to bigger and better things. I remember when Hawkins left, there was an even bigger uproar.

Good luck!

ok.

i understand where you are coming from, but i honestly dont remember any bsu coaches before petersen winning the national coach of the year award.

YOU

should really shut your hole on this one MDR. Peterson has been the best coach we've had. It will be very tough to replace him!

When Hawks

left I thought we were doomed, then we got Chris. If he leaves, who knows Harsin might be next but really deep down inside I don't want to see Chris leave. Then again I believe everything will be OK. Least we have a good/young team for the next three years and Kellen's bro is coming.

Remember

We had chris before hawk left...Chris provided a level of sophistication to the offense that led to the previous two coaches success. The reason his leaving now is a bad thing, is he has given his young coaching staff some time to mature. Now he can take them with him. Last year he didn't have that.

The good news for the new coach (if Chris leaves)...he inherits an incredible base.

Chris the mastermind

Yes I do remember that Chris was the OC for Hawkins but I didn't know he was for Koetter, if he stayed through two coaches then I don't think he is going to leave. I really believe he is first and foremost about his family and the quality of life Boise offers.

I was wrong.

He wasn't on Koetter's staff...he started as OC for Hawkins.

Stress kills

Do you really want that Chris? MSU will give that and a lot more. Your health is priceless.

Anyone

Can you tell me if they're televising the Pansy Ball State vs. Buff game?

Found it

ESPN II- "Itty Bitty" Ball State down by 7 in the 1st.

next HC

honestly IF it gets that far i would want Wilcox.

Petersen

Whether or not he takes the Mississippi State job may depend on $$$ and the opportunity to compete in the SEC. It may ultimately come down to his priorites and values. I'm a MSU alumnus. I would love to have him come to Starkville. If he doesn't, we will no doubt hire a very good coach. We gave the opportunity to the first african american coach in the SEC, and gave him more time than any major university would have. We need a great coach and believe that Petersen would be a great "fit."

I was thinkin

Since an undefeated BSU team isn't going to the big show and Chris worked his ARSE off for that season, maybe he would want to go to a place where when he has an undefeated season he does get into the Big Show no ?'s asked. Just my thoughts. I am a Bronco fan but that just hit me.

he doesn't even have to go

undefeated, he could lose one game and win the sec champ and still go...def perks

He doesn't have to go

Sure he would be guaranteed a BCS game with probably even one loss but that is a huge task when he will have to beat an Urban Meyer coached florida with more talent every year as well as a Nick Sabin coached Alabama with more talent every year. Add to that a normally tough as nails LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, and winning at MSU with lesser recruits becomes an extremely difficult task. I think Pete is a briliant coach but so are Meyer, Sabin, and Miles and they will always get better talent in their programs. More than likely he will have around a 500 record most seasons and on a great year a couple of losses. That would be a huge improvement for MSU but he will never become a national power at MSU.

One final thought, the biggest loss isn't going to necessarily be losing Peterson. The biggest blow comes when he takes several assistants who take chunks of the Bronco way with them and also several key recruits that wanted to play for them based on their visits. I do however fear that Peterson may have beeen the driving force behind the rise of the Broncos. Hopefully they can up his contract and keep him here. Can't someone get JR Simplots family to kick in some dough to keep him happy?

Bowl Comments

Well it would definitely explain why he was not upset this year about not going to a major bowl game...

Had bigger things on his mind...

Looks like it could be credible...

Do a search on Google for Petersen Mississippi... There's about 100 websites that come up confirming it's a done deal...

but

they are all blogs AND all based off the report on spartyandfriends.com

Just read this on ESPN's Web

Just read this on ESPN's Web site
http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3748072

JACKSON, Miss. -- Houston Nutt and Mississippi agreed to a contract extension Friday that will keep the football coach in Oxford following a report he was a target for the Auburn opening. Nutt and athletic director Pete Boone negotiated the deal, and all that remained was for the coach to sign it, a person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity

More of the same...

Again... condition of anonymity... Can't really trust this any more than we can trust the comments from Spanky and Friends... or whatever it is...

oops

oops wrong mississippi team, sorry.

Coach Pete

I doubt seriously if coach is going anywhere but if he does it will probably be to get away from the media psychobabble more than anything else.

This is

what that LSU coach had to go thru last year...I didn't have sexual relations with that cheerleader. Uh, I mean...I am going to stay the head coach for the Tigers, I am not leaving...

i hear

the vandal boooooosters, put up alot of front money

RUMOR RUMOR

This just in it is a RUMOR people.....

Pete is Staying Here

According to KTIK he just released a statement saying he's not going anywhere. Boise loves you Coach Pete, good to hear you are staying here.

PETE

has just said he has not recieved an offer from MSU and is not interested in that position...........pheeeeeeeew!

Whoa

this is getting really hard to follow. Is he or isn't he staying?? That came out at 1:35pm it is now 5:50pm. There's a time gap, whazz up wit dat

WORDS

out of pete's mouth he has not recieved an offer from MSU and he's not interested. Excuse me they were on paper not out of his mouth lol.

Werd

That's slang for, Oh, I get it but really I don't. Was it a quote word for word or was it Murph's scribblin?

MURPH

4:45 but the more times I read it the more I see Chris isn't leaving but then all this talk in Miss and on Spark about a done deal. Hey, I don't even know the guy-Coach-so I wish him the best and if he stays, like I believe he will, maybe some day I'll get to shake his hand. Coach been to shore lodge lately, well, if you want to get away Chris you'll find me close by. It was a riot from my window when the BSU trolley bus was taking a water break at Shore going up to Moscow and about five BSU fans were waving their big BSU flags on the road and yelling at the passing cars going by on the highway. I thought it was a dying elk or the wolves finally invading McCall.

Whew!

Got my heart goin for awhile!

Hell Yeah!!!

Way to be Coach Pete

So is KIVI 6

Is channel 6 as credible now as Dan Rather? What a joke! Maybe theres some crybaby Vandals at 6 hoping this fabricated story was true. Sorry Vandy babies, but the Broncos are going to kick your butts until we go to the MWC...so next year.

SOS babies SOS

Bye Coach.......don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

Whatever!

what is this?

For the last time!

Chris Peterson isn't going anywhere. I realize that blogs are essentially just conversation and heresay but holy Cow! Chris Peterson will never leave Boise State for a program like MSU. When rumors circulate about Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, etc. then we can all get excited and wet our pants, until then.....relax. Boise State is a great job...maybe 5 years ago it wasnt but it is now. The statesman writers need to stear clear of these "rumor mills" as well. THey should know better.

WAR BRONCO.
