Statement from Petersen
After a day of speculation, rumors and Internet reports, Boise State coach Chris Petersen felt compelled to issue a statement about the Mississippi State coaching position.
Boise State released this statement from Petersen on Friday night:
"I have a lot of respect for director of athletics Greg Byrne and the Mississippi State athletic program, but I am not taking the head coaching position at Mississippi State.
"Mississippi State has not offered me the head coaching position. I normally do not comment on coaching positions at other schools, but felt I needed to do so in this situation.
"We are very happy here at Boise State and look forward to our upcoming bowl game later this month."

UPDATE 4:49 p.m.: The Associated Press out of Mississippi is confirming that interviews have begun in the Mississippi State coaching search.
UPDATE 4:45 p.m.: Today's Channel 6 (KIVI) is reporting that Boise State coach Chris Petersen has been offered a four-year, $9 million contract to coach Mississippi State.
Four years is apparently the longest contract that can be offered in Mississippi.
That is $2.5 million per season, more than double Petersen's current salary for 2009 at Boise State.

The coaching rumor mill keeps spinning for Boise State coach Chris Petersen.
Yesterday, it was Petersen to Washington. Today, it’s Petersen to Mississippi State. Tomorrow, I’m sure it will be Petersen to Syracuse or Auburn or Miami of Ohio.
I’ve gotten at least two calls from folks in Mississippi claiming that Petersen to Mississippi State is currently the hottest topic going in the state.
This is despite Petersen’s comments to the Clarion-Ledger regarding his interest in the position. Petersen and Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne are close fiends, dating back to their time together at Oregon.
“Greg and I have been friends for a long time. We talk often. He knows how happy we are in Boise and that’s where we’re going to be,” Petersen told the newspaper.
Petersen told the Statesman’s Chadd Cripe that he was not interested in leaving Boise after the Broncos’ 61-10 victory against Fresno State in the regular-season finale on Friday.
“Like we’ve been telling our recruits and everybody, we think this is a special place, we really do. We’re just excited about what’s happened here and the future plans,” Petersen told the Statesman.
“I don’t know how to say this because I’m not going to be put in this box, but I’m not planning on going…. We just feel very confident that this is a great place, we like being here, we’re recruiting very good players here and we feel confident we’ll be here for hopefully a long time.”
Petersen is 35-3 as the Broncos’ head coach — the main reason his name is mentioned every time there is an opening around the country.
Petersen, who was on the road recruiting earlier this week, is back in Boise and working in the office, a Boise State spokesman said. Petersen is not interested in talking about any of the job speculation and he plans on being on the road recruiting next week, the spokesman said.
Petersen has three years remaining on a five-year contract he signed in 2007. He will make more than $1.1 million next season.
Petersen said Friday there are no current talks about a new contract or a contract extension, but said he would like to extend the contract.
Oregon on the blue
According to Rob Moseley’s excellent Oregon Ducks blog, the Ducks are committed to playing Boise State in Boise next season.

oh please, it was in autzen, with a "vaunted" defense that couldn't stop jack. Stop kicking three yard punts and putting linebackers on the outside defending our receivers. We had a redshirt freshman quarterback with two games under his belt and you had nothing to stop him, where was reed and chung against our freshman offensive line? Where? I might, maybe be apt to take your argument that you were down to your sixth quarterback in Boise and we beat you, but not in Autzen, ever, sorry. We have 2nd rate players remember?

boy would we love to play in your conf, then we would have similar budgets, players, on and on lets not forget. But we'll be "laughed at all the way to boise right?" with EVEN the mention of it. please, cause wash state, wash, oregon state really are powerhouses in the pac 10, how many games did wash and wash state win? UCLA played great against Fresno state and BYU. Oregon state lost to you utah, Oregon lost to Boise, see a trend here? I bet your general studies major will be just fine. But don't forget to roll a joint before you head to class. Easy to sit there and bash teams with no control of getting out of a conference. So in the meantime, we'll just beat you when we have the oppurtunity.

Just be glad your coach didn't use the Tubberville phrase, “they’ll have to carry me out in a pine box." Everyone looks at MSU in the recent past. In the 90s we were in the top 5 of the SEC. The difference is not having any offense under Croom and the last few years of Sherrill. Although the WAC is not the best conference, I expect Pete to recruit the players needed, and keep the Top 25 class Croom had coming in. Boise is the AAA for football coaches (Nutt, Hawkins, and Koetter). Until you can convince the Pac-10 to take BSU and Fresno, then the AAA is your limit.

I'm in GA. was alerted to this web site. sparkyfriends.com says that Peterson will be announced coach of Mississippi State after the SEC championship game. Called KBOI spoke to Micheal Sharp. Said he was looking into this.

Don't do it. I moved from Boise to Memphis, TN, just a short jaunt up the road from Starkville. The summers here suck. The winters here suck. If you want fans and alum that fly plains over the stadium calling for you head when your not doing as well as they want (Nutt, Arkansas), your kids to grow up facing racism everyday, (at whites as well as blacks) the worst school system in the country, and the hardest recruiting area there is, by all means, come on down.
If you want a peaceful, clean environment to raise your kids, in a great community, stay where you are.

vote you get koetter back but seriously after all the coaches that have bailed on this program we may see one of our own in Harsin. I'd like to think perhaps someday we'll get someone that really, truely wouldn't leave. That being said Peterson isn't going anywhere I truely believe that this man is about comfort, family and lifestyle and he loves Boise for all of those reasons.
