All-WAC hits and misses; Petersen contract talks

Boise State coach Chris Petersen (coach of the year) and quarterback Kellen Moore (freshman of the year) landed two of the WAC’s major awards Monday and five Broncos were placed on the All-WAC first team.
The Broncos’ first-teamers were wide receiver Jeremy Childs, offensive lineman Andrew Woodruff, defensive end Ryan Winterswyk, linebacker/safety Ellis Powers and cornerback Kyle Wilson. The second-teamers were wide receiver Austin Pettis, Moore, tailback Ian Johnson, defensive end Mike T. Williams, safety Jeron Johnson and punt returner Wilson.
Here are some quick thoughts on the All-WAC team, which was announced Monday and is available here. Post your thoughts about the team at the bottom of this blog.
-- Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick sealed the Player of the Year award and first-team quarterback honor when he torched Louisiana Tech on Saturday. I would have loved to see the WAC do something different and name two quarterbacks to the first team or something — they’ve done some odd things in the past — to recognize the fact that Boise State’s Kellen Moore is the league’s best quarterback. Kaepernick is the league’s only running quarterback and he won the award because of what he has done with his legs.
-- I don’t understand Hawaii’s Solomon Elimimian getting co-defensive player of the year honors. San Jose State defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert deserved the award alone with his 22 tackles for loss. Elimimian (101 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, four pass breakups) didn’t do anything more than Boise State defensive backs Johnson (84 tackles, 4 TFL, two interceptions, six breakups, three fumble recoveries), Powers (71 tackles, 8 TFL, 2.5 sacks, one interception, two fumble returns for touchdowns, one FF, one breakup) and Wilson (28 tackles, 5 interceptions, 10 breakups). In fact, Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said all year that end David Veikune (a hard-luck second-teamer) was his best player in every game.
-- I’m glad to see the WAC found room for Winterswyk, whose numbers were hurt by the Broncos’ depth, and Powers, who was inserted at linebacker even though the Broncos call him a safety.
-- Not sure how Hawaii DB Ryan Mouton beat out Johnson for the last spot on the first team. Mouton, who was moved to offense briefly this season, has 33 tackles, 5 TFLs, one sack, one interception, seven breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery — at best, comparable numbers. And he played on a defense that wasn’t nearly as good as Johnson’s.
-- The biggest snub of the day from a Boise State perspective: punter Kyle Brotzman. He was not given the second-team honor, apparently because the coaches don’t respect his rugby style. All that should matter are the results — 45.5-yard average (second in the WAC), 13 of 33 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and a WAC-leading 39.3-yard team net.

The State Board of Education meets this week. Boise State had a “placeholder” on the agenda to discuss a new contract for Petersen, with no specifics provided. That item has been removed from the agenda because contract talks have broken off, as I reported Sunday.
I still expect Petersen to be here in 2009 and probably for several years, but it surprises me that a deal wasn’t done. Job rumors are going to circulate around Petersen all month. In fact, I got an e-mail today from a reporter who covers Mississippi State and expects Petersen to be a candidate because of a prior relationship with the athletic director. I don’t see Petersen moving to Mississippi, but if his name can come up there, it’s going to come up almost everywhere.

Some interesting tidbits:
-- The TCU team that holds the WAC record for fewest points allowed in an eight-game league schedule allowed all 89 points on defense. Boise State allowed 94 points this season, with 27 of them on interception returns.
-- The Broncos’ scoring margin through 12 games would be the highest during their seven-year run of WAC dominance. The Broncos have outscored opponents 473-147 — or by 27.166 points per game. They outscored their opponents by 27.154 points per game in 2002, including the bowl game. This year’s WAC scoring margin of 31.1 is second to the 2002 team, which had a WAC-record scoring margin of 37.3.
-- The three MAC teams that are on the Broncos’ upcoming schedules all fired their coaches this year — Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Toledo. Southern Miss fired its coach between last year’s game and this year’s game and Wyoming, who the Broncos played last year and will have back on the schedule in 2010, fired its coach this year. All that turmoil can’t help the Broncos’ schedule strength.

Boise State’s Wilson was named the WAC special teams player of the week Monday for his 90-yard touchdown last week against Fresno State.
The other honorees were Kaepernick (24-of-42, 397 yards, four TDs) on offense and Utah State defensive lineman Ben Calderwood (three sacks, fumble recovery) on defense.

Best QB in the WAC
Kaepernick is just the ring leader of the three ring circus called the Pistol Offense. It's going to give a quarterback with the ability to run some pretty gaudy numbers at the end of a season, but not a ton of wins. Ault has proven that year after year since he implemented the vaunted Pistol offense. Kellen Moore is the best overall player in the WAC at the QB position, that actually is a true QB, not a running back that throws.
And these running QB's generally do not pan out at the next level either - i.e. Duante Culpepper, Byron Leftwich, Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell and so on and so forth. I don't see any of these guys in the hall of fame at the end of their careers because they just don't have the accuracy in their passing.
Amen Eagle Wing
Exactly what I thought when I read Kaepernick won that award. He is not a true qb in any sense of the word. Thank you for pointing out the long term successes of these running qb's. I'd rather watch Brett Favre on a down day, throwing wild passes up and down the field, then watch Jamarcus Russell taking off like a bullet only to get a rare huge play in. The WAC is going to eat their words when Moore continues to mature and turns into an absolute weapon, and Kaepernick finally gets those long legs bent the wrong way and is out for a season. (I seriously worry about that kid. He's not built for a lot of hits, and playing like he does, a lot of hits is all he's in for.)
no way
geez..those mississippi state boys must be on drugs...haha..no way would pete go there..i would guess that maybe the contract talks are being delayed due to the fiscal crisis the state is in right now..
Moore
Moore is the best QB in the WAC period. Moore outplayed Kaepernick in Nevada and will outplayed him for the next two years. I would take Moore over Kaepernick anytime.
EagleWing errr excuse me black quaterback hater!
EW,
I noticed your supposed list of failed quaterbacks listed all "black quaterbacks"??? Before you make an azz of yourself get your facts straight, Duante Culppeper, Jarmarcus Russell and especially Byron Leftwich were all throwing quaterbacks!!! Leftwich is a worse runner than KMo!
If memory sereves me right the number one running quaterback who did end up in the HOF would be one Steven Young!!!
Get your facts straight before you come on to the blog and start pulling information out of your "rectal source database"!!
LOL
If any of these guys end up sniffing the HOF I will eat my keyboard. None of the guys that I mentioned are what I would classify as pure pocket passers, which is what is successful in the NFL at the pro level. I'm not a hater of any type or race of quarterback, just an observer of QB's that have trouble doing that which they were drafted to do - and that being throwing the ball accurately.
Mike Vick was actually improving his accuracy quite a bit before Doggate.
so......
So your definition of a scrambling quarterback is someone who cannot throw that ball accurately? Thats absurd. Leftwitch and Russell are pocket passers.
Either that or there are so many you can name a list...PROGRESS?

Kaepersnack the Best QB in the WACk?
What a joke...Kellen is way more well-rounded and gifted. What a snub...
congrats to both
Congratulations to both Kellen Moore and Colin Kaepernick. Perhaps it should have been awarded to both. Here are some possible reasons the vote went the way it did: 1. The award is for Offensive Player of the Year not for the best passer, best quarterback or quarterback of the best team. 2. Total Offense by player nationally – Kaepernick 12th, Moore 19th 3. Total Offense by team nationally – “Three ring circus” Nevada 5th, Boise State 12th 4. Kaepernick had to face three teams currently in the BCS top 20, Texas Tech, Boise State and Missouri. 5. Kaepernick didn’t get to play against his own “swiss cheese” secondary. 6. Kaepernick joins only four other players in NCAA history who have passed for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 yards in a season. That being said, both players are very deserving of all the awards and accolades they receive. Great job Kellen and Colin!
Question for Chad
Not related the the coaches opinion poll. But, it seems that the biggest hurdle to getting Ball State to the Humanitarian Bowl is playing on the blue turf. Is there any precedent for a bowl game changing its location for a year for example renting the statuim at Washington State or the University of Utah?
Best QB in the WAC
I'd hardly call Byron Leftwich a running QB. He remains, and always was, as statuesque as Drew Bledsoe. That was the knock on him coming out of college: no mobility but a big arm.
Mississippi State
Well, if you look at the facts, Mississippi State just fired a coach that was making $1.7 Million per season base salary and they paid $3 Million to fire the guy. You are dealing with the SEC where even the teams near the bottom are paying double what anyone in the Mountain West makes. They are saying that the next coach will have a BASE SALARY between 1.7 and 2 Million per season. That job actually has some appeal because they won the SEC West several years back and lost to eventually national champ Tennessee in the SEC championship. Jackie Sherrill showed that you can have a lot of success there. If Coach Petersen is looking to jump, he could do a lot worse than Mississippi State - just to put it in perspective, they will pay their next coach between 700k and 1M more than Clemson is paying their new coach. Big money in the SEC and in the end, money talks.
The real facts ----> 10-30, 43-59-1, 13
1)Sylvester Croom got fired after a whole 5 seasons where he posted a 10-30 SEC record. Any good coach would rather get paid $900k plus bonuses a year and have a guaranteed job, than get whacked after 5 years of being a doormat and getting a $3mill buyout. Local population and size of the school allow the program to pay the coach so well.Where does Croom go now? Certainly not to a better program. Money talks, but so does job security, and a future.
2)Jackie Sherrill posted a 43-59-1 record, which is not terrible, but certainly not "a lot of success."
3)The Bulldogs have won 13 conference games since 2001. Pretty much a doormat program in the current century.
My, wasn't that special...and 3 pages!

Kellen Moore rules!!
Kellen Moore RULES!!! He is going to make all those other universities pay who passed him up...
Coach Pete
I've said it before and I'll say it again. money talks but not everyone is listening to that siren. there is more to life than money and coach Pete is wise enough to know this. with the health problems his son went through he realized at a much younger age than many that there are much bigger concerns in life than how big your pay check is. I applaud the philosophy and integrety he brings to the position. If you keep his family and coaches happy, he'll be here much longer than most of the greedy people that will never make as much money as he does.
