Nevada coach says 6-6 team should decline bowl opportunity

Nevada coach Chris Ault told the Reno Gazette-Journal that he thinks 6-6 teams should not play in bowl games.

Nevada (6-5) finishes its regular season against Louisiana Tech on Saturday. The Wolf Pack were 6-6 last season and played in the New Mexico Bowl, where Nevada lost to New Mexico.

"It rewards mediocrity," Ault said.

Here is the entire story.

I find it curious that a coach would turn down the opportunity for extra practices (one of the key hidden benefits of going to a bowl game for most coaches) and deny his team the opportunity to play another game.

But Ault seems to have the backing of athletics director Cary Groth on this one.

• The Honolulu Star Bulletin is reporting that Jack Sula, who was supposed to join the Boise State program this fall, has committed to Hawaii.

Sula gained fame when ESPN The Magazine profiled him and his family, which had been involved in gangs.

Sula

The opportunity to play running back I think helped Jack Sula choose UH. Wish he was a Bronco but Good Luck at Hawaii Jack!

I sat in the middle

of the UNR fan base for the game and I dont' know how many I'd say it was 10 to 1, said that they didn't like Ault and that he had to go before that fan base would come back.

snubbed for a perfect season

Okay Bronco fans the BCS has spoken and it is apparent that playing week wac schools does not get it done, nor does playing a sub par Oregon St. team. Until BSU plays outside the WAC they will get no respect. Or until they move to another conference which at the earlist would be 2012. Putting a pasting on lousy teams hardly gives you a shot at anything. Welcome to the big league and game BSU! You have no idea what the Horned Frogs are about to do to you and that freshman QB of yours. Remember the highest scoring offense in the history if D-1 football only managed to put up 35 points against this team and 2 of those were turnovers. GO MT. WEST. You are about to see your first defeat against a very very good team. So then where does that leave your week azzzzzzzz schedule and undefeated season??

Utah...

... is the team that played a "sub-par Oregon St. team". They squeaked by with a rally in the 4th quarter at home. The Broncos beat an Oregon team on the road that finished 2nd in the Pac-10, and ranked #15 in the nation.

Yes snubbed!

Ute, come on!! Are you serious? Boise has spanked TCU,Utah, and BYU fairly recently! What has Utah done in the last decade? A lousy pitt. team? Do you remember our visit to utah in 2006? Do your math! It was not Oregon st. it was Oregon. Oregon pounded O-St. and lets see who did O-St. beat Hmmmm wasnt it USC? Yes snubbed!!

Remember

That nasty hit Gerald Alexander gave that kid from Utah. Hit his helmet clean off. Did he get the hammer for that one? That's kind foresight for their upcoming game against Alabama. Better not let the little guys down Utah!! Damn Hawaii!

UTES

Boise spanked TCU,UTAH,and BYU. Can you please tell me when this happened this year. These teams have made the choice to play real games outside their conference. Unitl BSU does this

You have nothing to comment on how great BSU is for putting a beat down on the worst D-1 football conference in the nation. Like I said you beat a Oregon team very overated and who else. THIS YEAR. UM UM Oh ya Capitial high,Timberline and Bora

Come play with the MT. WEST then your stupid and worthless comments will have some merit.

Oh ya the soonest BSU will be able to get out of the week wac is 2012.

So they will continue to play sub-par teams bragging all wth way around Boise with there stupid little BSU stickers talking smack along with Caves and Prater those two suck. About how great we are to be so fourtunate to play Timberline. LOLOLOLOL

Boise State is BETTER than Utah!!

The BCS got it wrong and not just with the BCS selecting Ohio State over Boise State. The BCS got it wrong, as did all the polls, to rank Utah ahead of Boise State. Statistics don't lie and if you don't want to take the time to do the research, then you are qualified to be on both the BCS bowl selection committees and you can also be an AP media poll voter - vote in the blind based on bias. But if you are really interested in the facts and do your research of the statistics (see marcsulf's excellent posts), then you will plainly see that Boise State is BETTER than Utah and BOISE STATE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR A BCS BOWL OVER UTAH. Now with that said, IMO an undefeated Utah should still be in a BCS bowl if there weren't the idiotic automatic conference champion berths in the present BCS system. The system has flaws and I say BS BCS!! The facts don't lie - Boise State is better than Utah!!

no there not

BSU playing LA TECH,UTAH STATE VOTED THE WORST D-1 PROGRAM IN THE NATION,I-D-A-D0,LOL and I-D-a-HO ST. Wow thats really impressive. I would love to see you sorry azz Broncso go back and play against 120.000 screaming blue and yellow fans. BYU TCU all rated in the top 15 all year long so f-ing what you beat a very very sub par Oregon St team. BFD Tell me again when you are going to start to play real teams and how many top 15 teams have you played in the past few years. Remember that worthless financial mess in hawaii last year. Your still paying for that mistake. I watched every BSU game and yes they can score but hey its easy to do when you are playing Timberline,Boise high and Capitial. They system works for the players and the program. You will never get a BCS bid playing WAC teams. Time to play MT. WEST teams not the ones 5 years ago,and other teams in the nation that are viable conteneders why is it you think you got no BCS bid. You idahuckians craCk me up.

I can't wait to hear the sorry azzzz excusses when TCU puts a real azz whipping on your team that has had no real game at all this year. Wow Fresno St. Wow, The UNR game was your closest game and they are not a good team either.

GO UTES

ute

Was your mom your dad's sister? Man you don't make sense and you talk all speculation. Until you can talk common sense and add some credible football knowledge, I would let up on the pseudo smack talk. The MWC is a great conference and I believe Boise would be great addition. It would help Boise in conference SOS and give the MWC another big dog. At that time the PAC 10 wouldn't be the only west coast conference to contend with. You will see two very good teams come Dec. 23rd go head to head, Boise has my vote, they've played in games like this before and the coaches know how to prepare them. Utah on the other hand, IMO is going to meet a far more superior team, The Tide, and their luck is going to run out. They barely beat TCU, Michigan on a down year and Oregon State who was dismantled by the Ducks in the Civil War, to bad the Jacquizz Rodgers was sidelined the whole game. Boise beat the Ducks. That was a tough game but in Boise fashion they prepared for the game and executed well to get the win. They will do this against TCU and if they don't get the win it will be a great close game. If BSU was in the MWC they would prepare week in week out for the team in front of them and do their best, getting wins more often than loses. I would love to see Utah win, always cheering for the mid-majors when they're playing the big boys as I'm a fan of a mid-major myself, just don't think it's going to happen. Good Luck to your Utes.

great points

Speculation is not a option here though. Utah is rated over BSU because of rank of schedule. SO what if Michigan had a off year not many teams play to win in front of 120,000 screaming fans 4 times the size of BSU stadium. Ya barely beats TCU. Like I said great teams find a way to win. BSU finds a way to score more points on inferior opponents. When THE HORN FROGS dismantel your team then lets have a real conversation. And one more thing the ducks and beavers both suck as does the pac 10. I am hopeful Penn st shows those sissys from USC how real football is played!!
BSU will not know until 2012 if they are going to the MT.WEST,by then my UTES and the Cougs will be long gone from that conference. You have to have a minimum 50,000 seats to get into our conference. Your lousy 33,000 stadium which almost 3,000 includes the sky box is hardly worthy of change. Until the stadium gets the end zones built up this team will continue to have speculation as to how great it really is.

Oh ya my UTES stadium will be at 75,000 capacity by 2012 with a gound breaking for a new state of the art stadium. Until the stadium grows BSU gets the cream of the crop in the WAC but it goes not a bit further than that

50,000?

What's up with Wyoming? Didn't do research but they surely don't have a capacity of 50K in their stadium, do they? Beavers didn't suck this year, they beat USC and almost went to the Rose Bowl but as all good pac 10 teams, once they loose their star player they take about 3-4 games to come back. Utah beat Beavers by three. When I was in Judo my sensei always told me winning a match by a Koka, smallest score you can get, is not very honorable. Gets the win but doesn't make a statement. Michigan by three also. Koka? Gets the win but can't say Utah kicked their azzzz. And that TCU game. The only reason you won was two or three flubbed field goals by the other team. Great teams find a way to win, what was there a cheerleader off camera flashing that freshman kicker? Wish I was at the game. Your post made sense though, thanks for giving me some meat to chew on, gettin tired of sucklin milk.

One final thing, if Utah and BYU jump ship which other conference would they be in? To my understanding the only good west D1 conferences are PAC 10 and MWC.

goes to show

which fans are simply higher class. Bronco fan "Bluephan" responds with clarity and professionalism to "ute" who spews stupid, jealous, and factually devoid garbage.
Yes - good luck to the Utes AND the BRONCOS! and represent us little guys with CLASS - ok?

GO BRONCOS!!!

thanks

But I loath BSU for playing a inferior schedule when you start to play teams outside the WEEK WAC then you can talk smack. And I am not talking Oregon or OSU. How about a serious ranked team. Remember the season you had last year got you nothing but in debt from going to Hawaii getting your azzzzzes handed to you as it will happen again this year. Except this year your boys are going to get beat up in a serious way. In another worthless meaningless bowl game. I only care about UTAH and the MT. WEST. I will never give BSU credit until they play a stronger schedule which will not happen until 2012. By then Peterson will be long gone due to the fact that he is already disatisfied with the strength of schedule. So my spewing of your so called jealous and facutal devoid garbage is most true so don't allow your feelings to show your inept ability to truly understand the whole concept here pal!!

i AM NOT IMPRESSED THAT BSU BEAT A 5TH STRING QB UP IN OREGON!! lol

5th string?

The only reason he was 5th string was b/c he was a freshman. In fact they burned his red-shirt to get him into the game. He is now their first string QB.

FYI for ya-
loath = reluctant
loathe = to dislike greatly. Think you meant that one.

ACTUALLY

the guy (Masoli) that started the game against BSU has started everygame since. The guy that was the back up got moved into a recieving role and the 5th stringer is now 3rd string behind Loper.

Not what I saw

but then again I think you are a much bigger football junkie than I am. It sounded good when I posted it.

OK OK OK

I'M not positive he played every game since but the week after they played BSU I believe they played at WSU and put up 63, Masoli may have still been out with that concussion.

Masoli has played every game

Masoli has played every game since that hit against Boise. Check his stats.

I'll put this to rest

I'm 99.9 percent sure you are right about OU QB Masoli. The ducks are finally running on all cylinerds, opps, but I'll leave it that way-that's a funny word, and have are scored 50+ points against their last two opponents. The upcoming Holiday Bowl looks to be a good one and next season BSU will have their hands full come Sept 5th in Boise.

I am not impressed with your argumentive prowess...

We Are NOT ALONE...

They refuse to fly over here and bail our butts out anymore though.

UTE

Paaaaaaleeeeeeeaaaaaaaase! I don't know man! Most people on here will say I'm a pretty level headed poster.... (no Foreign doesn't count lol). Dude your bragging about Utah schedule is like a towel head yelling at another about how his shower cap is whiter than the other guys. Utah's only ranked opponents included IMO a highly overrated BYU, (only reason they were so high was becuase of their winning streak, and admittedly a very good TCU school. Other than that Utah's schedule is on par with BSU's. Utah did play Utah st, San diego st, Wyoming and weber st. BSU played and beat 8 bowl teams which really doesn't say much except that those teams are doing something else. Utah beat Michigan and at the time it was like dang! But toledo should have stolen more thunder from utah's win when they beat them in their house also. The win over Oregon St got a ton of love becuase OSU had just beaten USC. These things have been said and I know its getting old but I'm sure I made my point.

What is ute talking about?

Utah's schedule was not that much harder than Boise State's this year. Michigan with it's 120,000 screaming fans doesn't mean anything, they lost to Toledo later on. Compare that to Autzen Stadium against a ranked team and that seems like a much more difficult task. Remember how Fresno State was ranked at the beginning of the season and was the favorite to be the BCS busters? It's not Boise State's fault that they sucked it up and went down the toilet. I would love to see Boise State play higher ranked opponents and this year it was supposed to happen, but as I said, it didn't. The reason Utah played those ranked opponents was because they are all in the same conference. I totally agree that the trip to Hawaii for the bowl game last year was a total joke, but it has absolutely nothing to do with strength of schedule this year, so get over it, ute. I'm not saying one team is better than the other, and in fact I would have loved to see the two play. Watch out for 2012 when the boys in blue join the Mountain West, return to Rice-Eccles, and lay another smack down a la 2006!

I don't know, he's a UTE.

MUHAHAHAH

I got it!

Joe Pesci must be the common denominator then!
