Sali's selective reading
Submitted by Kevin Richert on Mon, 10/27/2008 - 4:06pm.
Bill Sali doesn't get many silver-platter talking points from editorial pages around the 1st Congressional District — but Saturday's Idaho Press-Tribune editorial was an exception.
The Nampa paper ripped Sali's Democratic opponent, Walt Minnick. "Minnick’s constant theme of 'see how conservative I am' makes him seem disingenuous and misleading."
Sali jumped on the theme. "Minnick has consistently misrepresented his views on the issues. By suggesting that he is a conservative, he is avoiding telling voters that he is pro-abortion, in favor of severely restricting gun rights, raising taxes and drastically increasing the size of the federal government," Sali said in a press release.
OK, but here's the rest of the story: the Press-Tribune has never endorsed Sali, and Saturday's editorial adhered to precedent. The paper declined to endorse either candidate — which struck me as a copout, given the statewide magnitude of the Sali-Minnick race.
Full editorial here.
In a remarkably glass half-full reading of the editorial, Sali neglects to mention the non-endorsement. An omission that is itself disingenuous and misleading.
