Offensive line shuffling continues

Boise State is shuffling its offensive line — again.

The Broncos altered their offensive front for the Southern Miss game, starting right tackle Matt Slater, right guard Jon Gott, center Thomas Byrd, left guard Cory Yriarte and left tackle Andrew Woodruff. Kevin Sapien and Nate Potter, who had been starting at the tackle spots, began the game on the bench.

This week's depth chart for Friday's game against Hawaii features another change. Sapien is back at right tackle with Potter as his backup. Slater is the No. 2 left tackle behind Woodruff.

"We'll try a different combination this week and go from there," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.

Petersen said Woodruff would remain at left tackle. Woodruff started this season at left guard. He has started at all offensive line positions except center during his career.

"It's nice to have a guy like that who can give us that flexibility. He's done a good job," Petersen said.

Byrd was benched late in the Southern Miss game after two fumbled exchanges. Yriarte replaced Byrd at center, while Gott and Sapien played the guard positions.

"Thomas is going to be a good player. He just has to iron out a few details and one is starting with the snap," Petersen said.

Injury update:

Petersen said defensive tackle Sean Bingham should play this week. He missed the Southern Miss game with an injury.

Defensive tackle Joe Bozikovich (shoulder) is out for the Hawaii game.

Reserve offensive lineman Garrett Pendergast did not travel to Southern Miss because of an injury suffered late last week in practice. He will be able to play this week, Petersen said.

BSU needs to change coaches.

Coach Pete,

Please let Coach Strasser take over the o-line responsisbilites and move Coach Huff to the tight-ends. You have to much invested in your running backs, qb, and Bronco Nation to let the o-line still "try to find the right combination". I know you probably want to be loyal to Coach Huff, but just like anyone on your program, if they aren't cutting it its time to give someone else a chance to make a difference. Coach Stasser did an awesome job last time and he can do the same this time. The o-line has some real talent but they really need to be coached up.

Sincerely,

A concerned fan.

change?

Bosoxfan,

Please let Coach Pete handle his business without having to hear idiotic statements, like this one, from fans who think they know more than the coach. Peterson has a 28-3 record as a head coach, so I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing and doesn't need any advice from "Joe Know-it-all" (not to be confused with Joe Sixpack). Although I'm sure, in your mind, you are some great football coaching legend, I think Coach Pete knows what he is doing, and the Broncos will be fine.

By the way....learn how to spell Strausser's last name next time you post.

GO BRONCOS!!!

I don't

think he was being durogatory ande!
I've heard the argument about the O-line several times. Like I posted below and on another thread this is about youth. Sometimes when things don't go the way we fans are used to we get all upset about it. But what I continue to look at like you said Pete's record speaks for itself. They'll get it worked out!

WOW - Is Huff your relative? AndeTood or is it Andy Todd?

An idiotic statement? Hardly, pull your head out and watch the games. The o-line is struggling. A change needs to be made. Sure Coach Pete has a great record but that doesn't mean dude walks on water? Come on, be fair and realize this team has some weak points and its ok to point them out, that's how you get BETTER!!! I'm glad you have your head in the clouds, good for you. But for the rest of us, we just want what's best for the program, and right now we need a better o-line. Before Kellen gets his head knocked off. Why do you think Coach Pete was so upset after the game, he to understands that the o-line needs help. Its not rocket science its football anyone can see the o-line is the weakness of this program.

GO BRONCOS!!!

It is the Weakness

You are right about it being a true weakness. I really believe we were able to hang with OU because our O-line was outstanding in that game. They're was a reason Kugler was the Head Assistant with the Broncos that year.
Before we can compete against the elite in college football, we need a stronger more athletic line...we may get there yet, we are still pretty young at that spot.

SLOW DOWN!

I think its beautiful that BSU can be 5-0 averaging roughly 30 points a game and we can still debate the problems with the offense. The running game got a much needed push this weekend against SM. Kellen didn't play his best game, and they had several drives halted becuase of mistakes by the o-line. They are problems but lets look at it this way. Are they getting fixed. First problem was the lack of a run game. Seemingly that has been fixed. With more aggressive play from the line they came up with a few others things that need to fine tuned, ie holdings and bad snaps, false starts (which has happened a couple times before the SM game.) Keep in mind each of these coaches has specific requirements but they all have input into each thing. I have no doubt by the time they line up for the next game we'll see certain things fixed and perhaps more things to keep working on. Each team, each defense brings out different things to work on, I'm confident this coaching staff will iron out everything.

Not in the clouds....

My head's not in the clouds.... I can see that the run game has struggled, etc. But I recall bosoxfan ranting on the coaches a week or two ago, about how bad the o-line is, Kellen will get hurt, etc.... If I recall, the line played AWESOME against Oregon, and to be fair, they have done a pretty good job of protecting Kellen.

I just dont think that 5 games into the season people need to be calling for coaching changes, especially when BSU is 5-0. I am as big a BSU fan as there is, and I am the first to be a realist and admit when things might not be that great....but I do get tired of hearing all these so-called "fans" talking like they know more than the BSU coaching staff. Let them keep working on this very inexperienced line, and before the end of the season, I think they will be MORE than just good. But in the meantime, what good does it do to sit here and criticize coaches, and call for other coaches to be demoted, etc....especially when they haven't even lost a game yet.

GO BRONCOS!

Let then find right combo

It's important to keep in mind how young and inexperienced the line is. Rotating the coaches will not help. Finding the best O-line combination is key. Considering the inexperience of the line they've done a decent job, but of course much improvement is needed. This is normal guys, nothing to fret about.
I'm sure there's no debate about the talent of the line, it's just plugging the guys into the right spots.

Is it the coaching?

Or are we too young, too small and not deep enough yet? Huff works daily with Strausser, and all coaches collaborate. Strausser wouldn't be doing anything differently.

Fan expectations are sometimes over the top.

Eagleman

That's another good point about the size, or lack thereof. After a year of experience and more time in the weight room during the off-season, count on the line being much better next season.

Its called shell shocked

There is no amount of coaching that will overcome the inexperience of this line. Swapping out linemen for every game is not the answer either. Its hard to gel and perform as a cohesive unit if you are constantly changing things up. Its fine in practice to change things up, but come game time, you need to stick with what has been working. The line may be ugly and a little nerve racking to the fans, but they are getting the job done.

I think the biggest problem for the fans, is that they are expecting the same level of performance as the 06, 07 teams. And when they don't get what they expect to see, it automatically has to be a problem that needs fixing. Changing the coach out isn't going to make a bit of diffence right now because the basic technical skills to be a linemen are a constant. A really good coach may be able to tweak a few things here and there to improve individual players, but nothing will overcome what these linemen need, and that is time. Time to grow and develop as individuals, and as a single minded unit, who know without thinking what the others will do in any situation.

These kids are playing on a national stage, in front of huge crowds, and dealing with the intense pressure for the first time in their lives. The stress of the fans, coaches, school, being on their own, and all the other fun things that young adults in college have to face is starting to affect them. What a surprise, huh? Hammering them right now isn't going to help at all because if you had more experienced linemen, they would be playing. This is the group that you have, so don't add to the tremendous pressure they are already facing. Just be patient and give them time.

Come on AndeTodd. BSU is

Come on AndeTodd. BSU is getting ready to move into the heart of their program with the likes of Utah State, Idaho, & Hawaii just ahead. If the O-Line continues to play the way they did against lesser opponents like Southern Miss, Bowling Green, and Oregon then K.Moore and all 4 running backs will be in body bags by the end of the season. Personally although the team is 5-0, I think the entire Offensive Coaching Staff should be let go, including the offensive guru himself.

Could you imagine how pissed fans would be if we had coaches that act like they are playing NCAA 2009 on the Xbox each Saturday (cough...cough...Idaho)? In case all the fan-critics have forgotten...we are undefeated. The O-Line has allowed 6 sacks in 5 games. K. Moore is completing 72% of his passes. Not to mention the defense is 7th in the nation in points allowed!!! So the rushing game is middle of the pack after 5 games. The coaching staff is more than competent, if not amazing. They'll figure this thing out with the O-line and the running game. Now, if BoSox fan has found a way to lure Kugler back to Boise State, he might have a leg to stand on with respect to who the O-line coach should be.

O-line shuffling

Jeeesh!

I can't believe some folks are already offering suggestions about coaching staff changes to Coach Petersen on how to fix the offensive line. Ryan Clady made a statement to the effect that he didn't know much about left tackle when he arrived at Boise--don't think he'd ever played the position. All he did was become an All-American, and the starting left tackle as a rookie with the Denver Broncos. The BSU coaching staff develops players at all positions--they have proven to be very good at it.

The coaches will get them in the right positions; their pass blocking has been good, and the run blocking will come along. They have the old workhorse (Woodruff) at left tackle now, where he can anchor the line and help the young guys develop. They'll be solid.

charliebub is right

Clay was brought in as a Defensive lineman, then learned to play o-line. Have faith, the line is doing better then most expected.
