Duck hunt starts off slowly on Snake River near Walters Ferry
Submitted by Zimo on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 2:29pm.
Shortly after shooting hours opened for duck hunting on the Snake River near Walters Ferry on Saturday, there wasn't a duck in the sky.
It was a windy, cold day on the river and hunters thought conditions would have been perfect with the cold snap. No so. A couple of veteran hunters of the area, scouted the area Friday and saw lots of waterfowl. But they were puzzled why Saturday was so slow and why the ducks disappeared after the storm front moved in
We were hunting the Snake River in that area and had the same results. We got a few ducks, but it was the worst opening day I can remember. Hunters thought maybe the wind kept the ducks down on area ponds where they were able to get shelter. At least one group of hunters who set up on a private pond had good results, according to officers at a nearby Fish and Game check station.
If you went out on the opening of waterfowl season, let us know how you did and your thoughts on opening day.

Good hunting for us
I and my 3 hunting partners got 4 limits both Saturday and Sunday. Both days it only took about 50-60 minutes. We were hunting still not moving water, though.
Ponds best

That's what I've been hearing. The river was no place to be. The ducks were moving inland to ponds and sloughs to get out of the fierce wind that was on the Snake River.
Believe me, I was on the river and it was no place to ducks, dogs or hunters.
where on the river
I know a couple guys who did ok on the Payette, no limits, but got some birds.
Did you float in or walk in?
Boated in on the Snake
Zimo:
we boated to a cove on the Snake River last Saturday. We also hunted today and it was terrible. Didn't even fire a shot.
Talked to other hunters and they did terribly, too. Ducks are hitting the ponds and seem to be staying off the rivers.
Don't know what's going on.
One hunter reported that while fishing the Snake in the spring, he did not see any young birds. Maybe we had a poor hatch of local birds.
Also horrible saturday
We tried Lake Lowell Saturday morning. A few people got a couple birds. We didnt get any thanks to some really nice, mature, thoughtful fellas sitting almost right on top of us and sky busting anything within a mile.
There should be a proximity law enforced...
