I palled around with a domestic terrorist

I must confess. I served on a committee with a domestic terrorist who was wanted by the government. You might say we “palled around” since we shared a few drinks at cocktail parties.

I served on the Great Lakes Basin Commission’s Public Involvement Group with a man named Barry Freed in the late 1970s. Freed was an environmental activist from New York work to protect the St. Lawrence River and I was a weekly newspaper reporter from the Lake Superior region of Wisconsin. We served with small town mayors and business people on the panel that considered new plans for protecting Great Lakes water quality.

Freed’s real name was Abbie Hoffman.

The co-founder of the Youth International Party, a part of the radical anti-war movement, Hoffman had been convicted of inciting a riot during the 1968 Democratic Convention along with other radicals in the famous Chicago Seven trial. The charges were later dropped.

The McCain campaign has made a lot of hay about Barack Obama’s association with former 60s radical member of the Weather Underground, William Ayres. The group preached revolution and went underground in the late 1960s committing acts that led to the deaths and maiming of police and public officials.

Ayres once bombed the Pentagon in protest of the Vietnam War. He and his wife Bernardine Dohrn were on the FBI’s Most Wanted list for years until the charges were dropped because of excesses by federal prosecutors. Now he is now a highly acclaimed education professor at the University of Illinois. Obama, was only 8 when Ayres and his wife Bernardine Dohrn were what Sarah Palin calls terrorists.

But Ayres held a fundraiser in his living room when Obama first ran for the Illinois State Senate in 1995 and served on two different boards with the then community organizer Obama that directed charity spending in Chicago. Palin describes that as “palling around with terrorists.”

Hoffman didn’t bomb the Pentagon, he tried to levitate it with 50,000 other protesters. He replaced anger with laughter, staging guerrilla theater events like dropping thousands of dollars on to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, sending the traders scurrying around to collect the money.

But when I knew him as Freed in 1978, he was on the lam for cocaine charges, living a secret life hiding in plain sight. We first met at a conference in Buffalo and I couldn’t help saying, “You look remarkably like Abbie Hoffman.”

“People tell me that all the time,” Freed replied.

Later, in Detroit, we worked on official comments on the commission’s plans. He worked well with people like the mayor of Silver Bay, Minn., who didn’t share his environmentalist views, in crafting our response. He had spoke to Rotaries and even testified to Congress.

In 1980, the same year Ayres and Dohrn turned themselves in; Hoffman surrendered to federal agents and served a year in prison. After his release he wrote, gave speeches and even continued to participate in protests until he committed suicide in 1989.

I can’t compare my relationship with Hoffman to Obama’s but neither was it as close as Palin’s own ties to the Alaska Independence Party . Her husband Todd was once a member of the group that advocates secession from the United States and whose founder Joe Vogler, expressed hatred for the American government and cursed the American flag.

As hard as younger generations like Obama’s try, we can’t completely get away from the stark division in our society in the 1960s and during the Vietnam War. This election may tell us whether those political winds will blow through yet another generation or finally be left in the past.

Very good points Rocky. I'm

Very good points Rocky. I'm not so sure that I haven't "palled" around with some of the same within my circles over time.

Palin- "blind ambition"

Actually, if Ayers was a domestic terrorist and has repented, then, as a GOOD CHRISTIAN, as she claims to be, Palin should be eagerly accepting of him as Jesus believes in repetence for sin; FORGIVENESS.

Seems Palin likes to pick and choose what parts of the Bible she'll subscribe to -- and always puts POLITICS first.

Sarah, where does the Bible say "Politics First?"

Also seems to me that most pregnant women whose water just broke would NOT hop on an airplane and still give a speech.

Shows Palin certainly puts "blind ambition" first -- as McCain has recently accused Obama of.

The only thing Ayers has repented of

Is not killing more people. He is proud of what he did.

Truth is hard to come by

Very good points?

After you spend several paragraphs trying to make a moral equivalence between your association with Freed/Hoffman, you admit that your "palling around" can't be compared with the Obama/Ayres relationship. Nice of you to slip that in.

But then, you more egregiously try to shift the subject to Palin's reported ties to this group in Alaska and do make an obvious attempt to morally equate that with Obama/Ayres. Please. So they don't like the U.S. government in that group, and think about seceeding. Not the best way to respond to disagreements with your government, but I don't see anywhere that they blew anything up or killed and maimed people. I'm fairly sure if they had, you would have related that to us here.

In fact, Palin's response to being unhappy with the government was to get involved, with the idea to change it, WITHOUT VIOLENCE, on the inside. Which is the RIGHT thing to do, and many of us think she did some good things in the course of doing so.

Respectfully, I don't think your piece here is fair in the least.

Palin and Obama

Forgive me but haven't both of them taken the same path?

She did not associate closely

With a known killer. The lack of judgment is the issue here. Not to mention the long string of outright lies that Obama has told concerning his relationship with Ayers.

Bad judgment in associates and a casual relationship with the truth are not good qualities in a president.

da Reverend

Same with R Wright.

Obama, could have stood up and said, "that's right he's my minister and will continue to be. The stuff he says has some merit. And more importantly there are people in AMerica who DO believe all of it."

There is nothing wrong with admitting the truth. ANd the truth is -- racism still exists and some of the black community is pist about it and rightfully so.

We have a great divide in socio-econ levels and being black/hispanic affects the chances of which side of the line one rests.

Instead Obaman dropped Wright like a Vandal football. Now wants to distance himself from his association from X. Big deal! Be up front and say "yeah so what. I didn't know what he did. Or I believed he was right at the time but not now."

And Michelle Obama, bless her heart, says it's the first time she has been proud to be an American. She was obviously

You have to hand it to Michelle for honesty

Newspaper Terrorism

Rocky, your writing is terrorism.

palling around with terrorists

The word "terrorist" is thrown around like leaves in the wind. If you define it as attacking innocent folks in an attempt to gain political or military victory, then you must include the USA bombing of women and children in Japan in WWII. Justified or not, it was terrorism, and it worked, saving thousands of GIs and Japanese soldiers from slaughter. One person's terrorist is another person's hero. It just depends on your perspective.

Fire bombing a judge, and his family who pose no physical threat

is the same as prosecuting a war. More stupid liberal moral equivalence. You make me sick.

What is the difference between Ayers and the Unabomber? Nothing, one just got prosecuted and the other didn't.

If John McCain served on a board for several years with the abortion clinic bomber you would be singing a different tune. The difference is, I wouldn't. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Truth is hard to come by

Well you know, people always

Well you know, people always hate "moral equivalence" arguments when it blatantly points out their own hypocrisy.

What hypocrisy?

Since when is holding an extreme view the same as targeting women and children with fire bombs?

What credibility do you have after making that kind of argument?

Truth is hard to come by

A Closed Mind is a Mental Disorder Political_Junkie

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Faux News and the ilk would have you believe "Liberalism" means nothing more than tax and spend. Oh, sorry, that's what the Republicans have been doing since Ronald Reagan -- spending our tax money to record high deficits --

The actual definition of Liberalism is:
lib·er·al·ism (lbr--lzm, lbr-)
n.
1. The state or quality of being liberal.
2.
a. A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority.
b. often Liberalism The tenets or policies of a Liberal party.
3. An economic theory in favor of laissez-faire, the free market, and the gold standard.
4. Liberalism
a. A 19th-century Protestant movement that favored FREE INTELLECTUAL INQUIRY, stressed the ethical and humanitarian content of Christianity, and DE-EMPHASIZED DOGMATIC THEORY.
b. A 19th-century Roman Catholic movement that favored political democracy and ecclesiastical reform but was theologically orthodox.

And a Colorado mind should be doing his chores.

Seevee -- The ends justify the means

So you are clearly saying here then that terrorism is "justified" if the ends justify the means.

clarity

If by "clearly saying here then that terrorism is 'justified,' you mean that I meant that it is questionable if it is justified, then, yes, that's exactly what I meant.

I don't see CWW yet...you nuke his Cheeryoats?

speaking of moral equivalence

Ayers most likely would have gone to jail except the US AG at the time (John Mitchell) illegally wiretapped him, thus making prosecution unworkable, kinda' like Gonzales and the evidence obtained via torture from "terrorists". Oh to live in the simple black and white world of the American conservative. And get this, the chief Weathermen prosecuter in 1972, William Ibershof, in a letter to the NYT, dated Oct. 8 2008, states, "Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen." He also says, "I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child."

I'm sure Russell and Mush-mouth got into all sorts of jams...

and Fat Albert had to save them all the time.

So what?

An illegal wire tap is exactly like killing someone

No wonder Hillary thought that a little girl reading poetry was just like being subjected to sniper fire. With stretches like your it's only one small step to a whopper like that one.

Truth is hard to come by

Oh yeah, right, that's what I meant

I just thought it was interesting that Right Wingers were in such a dither to convict evi-doers that they ended up commiting crimes (and therefore negating what they wanted most) in both cases (Ayers and the "terrorists") in the course of upholding the law. The "moral equivilance" I was refering to was the justification used by the idiots who broke the law to preserve it. I was not equating wire tapping with murder. I'm embarrased for you that I even have to write that. As for Hillary, I think I have to agree with William Safire that she is a "congenital liar."

Ok Seevee, I get what you are saying

and you should be embarrassed. Your meaning was anything but plain, hence my move to break it down as clear as possible what it seemed you were insinuating.

Truth is hard to come by

You were out reverse pickpocketing with the Burger King, huh?
