A few more notes and quotes on Boise State's four running back situation:

• I tackled the issue of what to do with the backs in this column.

• The Broncos had 42 personnel groupings for last week's game against Louisiana Tech. Running backs coach Jeff Choate assigns the running backs to certain personnel groupings.

D.J. Harper was in the personnel groups that are used in short-yardage and goalline situations, which is why he got two short touchdown runs.

"Who's running the hardest at Thursday practice? The film never lies. You either pack it in or we're taking that group away," Choate said.

Ian Johnson, who is one rushing touchdown shy of the school record, said he was not jealous of Harper picking up two touchdowns in what used to be the Johnson zone.

"This running back crew is so tightly knit and we’re such good friends, which is something that we’ve lacked in the past, that I’m truly happy for him," Johnson said.

"I got my 3-yard touchdowns. He’ll get more in the future. I wish he wouldn’t get so many while I’m here. I’m going to try to get that group back for myself this week."

With only about 75 offensive plays — give or take — it's hard for the Broncos to use all 42 personnel groupings.

• Choate dismissed suggestions that the Broncos use more of an NFL-style committee at running back. For example, an every down back, a third-down back and a short-yardage specialist. Choate said all the backs are too versatile to be in such specialized roles.

• Choate said the backs did not miss a single assignment in the Broncos' 38-3 victory against Louisiana Tech.
