Weekend outdoors pick - Check out the falcons and hawks
Submitted by Zimo on Wed, 10/08/2008 - 7:16am.
The Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey will celebrate its annual open house Oct. 12 with reduced admission prices, special activities for kids and outdoor flight demonstrations by falcons and hawks.
I went to this last year and it was pretty cool, especially seeing the birds up close. Makes for great photos.
I know, Friday is the opening of deer season and Saturday is the opening of duck season, and it's going to be a busy weekend. If you're going to out of town, this might be something for other members of your family who will stay home.
Raptors will display aerial skills at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., weather permitting. Films and tours of the Velma Morrison Interpretive Center and the Archives of Falconry, featuring the new Arab Heritage Wing, will be presented throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Activities for children include prey toss and bird biology games, build-a-bird and scavenger hunts. Visitors also can buy raffle tickets for a queen-sized quilt made by Peregrine Fund volunteer Ruth K. Kassens. Tickets for the red, black and white quilt are $2 each or six for $10.
Admission is $3 adults, $2 seniors, $1 kids and free to members
For information: 362-8687.
You get out there by driving from I-84, take the Cole Road exit and continue south for 6 miles on Cole Road and Flying Hawk Lane.
By the way, the Peregrine Fund is a non-profit organization that conserves and restores rare species of raptors around the world.
