Update on another tree in Boise River
Submitted by Zimo on Tue, 10/07/2008 - 6:56am.
There is nothing that scares the heck out of paddlers than trees across the river and blind curves.
I mentioned the downed tree in the Boise River upstream from Glenwood Bridge that surprised some canoeists and other floaters this summer. It's in the section of river if you float from Americana Boulevard to Glenwood or from Willow Lane to Glenwood.
Well, Lee and Cindi Walton sent over a tip on the status of the tree Monday. Lee walked up the river to see the downed log two weeks ago and said that, with the water down and the branches removed, the tree isn't as much a hazard as it was six weeks ago.
"The bad thing about it is that if you aren't quick or if you tip over going under the new downed log, there is a strainer about 100 yards downriver from it and it is dangerous. We spent 2 hours extracting our canoe from under it six 6 weeks ago," Cindi said.
It is about 1/4 mile above the Glenwood Bridge.
"As you come down the river, the river makes a sharp turn to the left. There is a gravel bar in the middle," she said, "Going to the right is dangerous as the current goes under a tree, so you have to go left. When you go left and make the turn to the left, the tree is across the whole river.
"If you go clear to the right of the turn you can go under the part of the tree that is still up on the bank. But, it is a surprise because it is a blind corner and if you don't know it's there you're on it before you can do much," she said.
Thanks for the information and heads-up for paddlers.
