Check out our enhanced commenting feature

Having trouble posting a comment? You may need to log off and log back in. Because we are using the same database of users (meaning you didn't have to re-register), that's the easiest way to get the new system to "recognize" you.

* * *

By default, newest comments are listed first. Try sorting by oldest comments first. Hopefully, that will help you when you are trying to respond to comments by others.

Check out our enhanced commenting feature. Anyone who has registered at idahostatesman.com can comment on a story. You can sign in or register at the top left of our pages.

Readers can help us watch for offensive comments. If a comment is flagged by multiple people, it will disappear off the site.

Don't bother doing this if you just disagree with an opinion; we'll put the comment back on the site. But offensive comments will disappear off the site faster under this new system with your help.

You will have a "persona" page where you can type in a bio for yourself and upload your own avatar (or picture), if you choose.(Changes can be made under "my profile" once you are logged in.)

You will be able to create your own blog. You can find out how by going to your persona page.

We hope you like these changes. Questions? Feel free to email me.

How do you think that will actually work out here?

----------
If this had been an actual troll post the attention seeking you just read would've been followed by screaming, name-calling and cutting and pasting for no apparent reason. We now return you to the Idaho Statesman already in progress.

The main site won't even let you correct your crappy spelling!

I honestly don't need an avatar, be damned if I'm Mr. K-hits tho

So far, not good

The system won't let me post. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, though, after seeing FO's posts above.

Just to let you know, it tells me that I need to login or register. So I login. Then it tells me that I need to login or register.

Logging in like that didn't work for me either.

I had to click the log out button. Then log back in, and then I could post.

It sucks!

Don't like the new layout has it's a waste of screen having a single column on only a portion of the page! And right now having a $%^&*( time leaving a comment on the new format.

Sometimes its best to leave things be --

It IS rather tiny and 1000 words doesn't just foil cut and paste

It foils honest answers also.

I hate it!

So I doubt if I will be returning to your site. This format was already offered at a dozen other sites, too bad you decided to change without considering all the options.

The unique forum you offered is what brought me back to the Statesman, but if that's gone, I no longer need to waste my time here and can obtain my local news from cites that actually do a better job of reporting.

Go back to the old one

Go back to the old one!!!!!

Only The Statesman

The same paper who decides to
-Put the TV Guide in Wednesday's edition.
-Fill the Letters to the Editor section with gargage campaign letters and personal opinions.
-Spend weeks and months telling us gross things about Larry Craig.
-Hire and keep reporters who can't write well.
-Not use spell check or grammar check before or after they post on the site
-etc..

p.s.
I don't like the new format and I like my TV Guide on Sunday.

I don't even NEED a TV guide!

Cable, satellite and DTV have on-screen details now.

If AP can say it so can we, paddle the Puritan from McClatchy

I don't want to hear any more excuses about McClatchy either...

THEY'RE a wise, moneymaking group of people!

honestly, maybe hitler should run the paper, if that's the excuse

Yeah, this new commenting stuff is total garbage.

Who's the idiot in charge who thought they were doing something good?

It's a mess.

Oops, my bad...

Apparently Darlene Carnopis is the idiot in charge.

She defers to McClatchy over and over, thinking she's a pawn

Not Enhanced

To call this new commenting style "Enhanced" is humorous. Without the option to reply to a direct post, edit mistakes, or see recent comments on all stories this is basically a downgrade. I have no need for a persona page, if I did I'd go to MySpace. The comment section is no longer useful. Without the ability to carry on a conversation with other users it is pointless. There are many better ways to prevent the offensive comments without taking away so much functionality.

I agree I/O

I've been fooling with this all day, and I feel isolated and disconnected from the other posters. Have not figured out this "friends" thingie either. Can't edit a typo, can't directly reply or carry on a conversation. The 'persona' is just fluff. My biggest problem is now it takes a news story 3x longer to load on our slow DSL - I would think dial up would be more then painful, it would be prohibitive.

I see there is a fresh new forum page, I suppose that is where we are supposed to "chat" anyway. I'll give this new comment format chance, but so far its been a bit trying. The reason I check this site so many times during the day, is just to see what the "irregulars" have been posting about. There are other news sites if I want only news.

Pretty much

I can't see much point in posting comments, if I can't carry on a conversation.

Doesn't work for me either....

I can still log on to this format (obviously), but when I try to log onto the new one, it says that I'm trying to use an inactive account. When I try to activate the account, it tells me the account is already in existance (duh).

I was trying to see if anyone knows what's going on with the old Firebird Super Oval. Saw the picture of the Pink Lady and it brought back lots of memories. Was there for a sprint car race a few years ago, but I heard the track has been shut down again. Is this true? Can't get much news about it down here.

My posts appear out of order.

If I reply to something posted at 5 pm, my reply says it was posted at 4 pm and shows up before the post I replied to. My computer clock is right - what could be causing this?

Edited: Okay I just went and made a post. It's 7:37 pm by my computer clock (which is correct within a minute or so) and the time stamp on my post using the new format says 8:36.

Someone whose post was there before me has a time stamp of 8:51 pm, so my post shows up before theirs even tho it was actually posted sometime afterwards.

It sucks

It is sooooooo slow, change it back

I can't comment either

It tells me I'm logged on but won't allow me to comment. When I try to reregister, it says my email is already in use.

same here

That's pretty much the same as what it's doing to me. Logging out and logging back in didn't work either.

So it isn't all bad

Truth is hard to come by

lol! p_j

!!

Follow directions

above
Log off, and re long in. It will recognize you then. As much as it is.

did that, didn't work

I can log on and off all I want on this format, when I try on the new format, it says I'm trying to use an inactive account. It won't let me activate it because my email address is already being used.

Log completely off on Voices and Main then start with Voices.

Messed with this off/on all day -- it still sucks!

Don't they try these things out before they dump a program that was working -- this is not progress -- it's taking a step back with all the wasted space on the screen. This is the pits!

I agree

The whole purpose of these threads is to allow interested readers to carry on a "conversation" regarding the article. If there is no way to reply to a post - I won't find much interest in either posting or reading the posts.

Please, Statesman Please, (don't start singing now) - please put the message board back the way it was.

I don't need an avatar, I just want the old way back.

It sucks....

There's really not much else to say...

Not user friendly AT ALL!!!!

email the publisher.

name is Mi-Ai...email IT at publisher@idahostatesman.com. I find it very user unfriendly. Nothing nice to say, so........

Please bring back the old format, Darlene Carnopis

Please bring back the old format to the comments section. The new format is simply horrible and a a step backwards in usability and functionality. The "avatar" feature is simply a gimmick and offers nothing to us in terms of enhancement.

Please?

Until then, my posts to this venue have ceased.

My best wishes to all the friends and acquaintances that I've made over the last year. Even you, freearth.

Hey B_dub

Take care and best wishes to you too! I haven't been on much lately as life takes over, but I have no reason now that the changes are here so I won't likely be back.

It sounds unanimous Statesman

New format is terrible. Unless you want a full scale desertion, it looks like you better bring back the old format.

Full Scale Desertion

Maybe that is exactly what they want.

"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." Howard Zinn

I don't like the new format...

I prefer seeing all of the comments on the thread and I like to follow the comments on the side of the page.

I give this new format:

"1 finger up"..;)

I find it interesting.

They're using the old format to see what we think of the new one.

Give us this format Statesman

Leaving is counterintuitive...one might think it's desired of us

Stay and make it obvious.

I love the added features

Liek the blog and the personal messaging, but the old format is FAR superior for the way our conversations actually go. I too feel isolated, I liked the rough and tumble of the old system. I guess it depends on what you are looking for, but the community that was here looks like they are moving out.

Truth is hard to come by

no threads

make it basically evil. also, as noted, incredibly slow. i had no trouble logging into the new one, or setting up an avatar, but so what? who cares?

threading is what makes this one work. only real problem with old one is that clicking on one of the "last ten" links in right border wouldn't take you to the item you clicked on if it wasn't on the first page. if it was up to 3 pages, and the comment was past page one, it would take you to the top of page one, which was a big hassle. also wouldn't show the red/new items on later pages, so you could have great difficulty finding the actual comment you wanted to see.

Here's an idea.

A few years ago the Statesman called and asked if I'd be interested in being involved in how they reformated their local political forums. Specifically because of my interest in the Govs Garvee bonding and my opposition to it, I did get a little vocal. Just maybe, they would work with a few of the regulars and irregulars to bring something here that would work for all. There is actually, believe it or not, a touch of intelligence that goes on here.

The New Format

Is an insult to the intelligence of a dead tree. The Idaho Statesman continues is slow slouch to Gomorrah and oblivion. Faster!

same at other McClatchy papers

Same commenting format, same dying newspaper industry.

Is the Statesman trying to save itself from itself?

Changing formats at this time shuts down the flow of competing ideas and tends to limit discussion of competing ideas (not that there is much competition). If the editors of the statesman feels that a story does not hew to the McClatchy party line, it spikes it, just like it is spiking this format. Maintain the old format! Let the insane Alinskyites speak. Let freedom and liberty be defended! Take the trash out! Participate in the clash of Patriots! Let their be blood!

The Statesman is crazier than an outhouse rodents rump if it changes to it's new "enhanced" format.

Who or what is Alinsky and why is it insane? CITE

The Statesman has once again taken a giant step ....

.... back-wards .
I have been a user of these boards since it was a "Message Board" --- which by the way was far superior to the up-dated (?) comment section that took it's place and has been running with its ridicules "flag system and automated censorship" , triggered by a few keywords .
When - at that time - I inquired why they stopped the "Message board" which allowed folks to discuss the days news , while having control over who you were forced to manually skip over , I was told it was money .
Now they have once again -- with out any user input (that I am aware of) "improved" it beyond a user friendly section .
I will watch and see if they really want there readers to have input -- but there past mistakes don't leave me hopeful .

Reddog

Wah Wah Wah.....

what a bunch of crying babies, how about trying it for more than one day before you go crying like somebody just took your lunch money. Typical of this board all anybody wants to do is bash the Statesman and tell them what a horrible job their doing all the time, so be careful what you wish for and be grateful you got what you got the next move they might just take it down all together.
