It’s striking how much confidence the Boise State football coaches have in freshman quarterback Kellen Moore.
Every time he does something remarkable, they shrug it off as expected.
Moore was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s national offensive player of the week Sunday and the WAC offensive player of the week Monday. He’s a candidate for USA Today’s player of the week award, which is determined in part by fan voting here.
Moore was 25-of-37 for 386 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s 37-32 upset at Oregon. He tossed one interception.
Coach Chris Petersen said he wasn’t surprised.
“We just really felt like he could do what we needed him to do, which is run the offense,” Petersen said. “We never thought about scaling it back.”
Even Petersen, though, was impressed by Moore’s 14-yard throw to wide receiver Jeremy Childs. It was third-and-12, the Ducks brought more blitzers than the Broncos had blockers and Moore threw the ball to a spot just before getting drilled. The ball hit Childs right in the hands.
“I know Oregon will put that play on and go, ‘How do you defend that?’ ” Petersen said.
Moore has completed 72.2 percent of his passes and is ranked seventh in the nation in pass efficiency.
“That just goes to show that the coaches were right when they made the decision on quarterback,” senior tailback Ian Johnson said. “They saw something that we could only get a little glimpse of.”

Boise State was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week on Monday by the Football Writers Association of America. Alabama, East Carolina and USC were the previous honorees this year.
The FWAA has named a team of the week since 2002. It is determined by the FWAA board of directors and All-America committee.

Other highlights from Petersen's press conference Monday:
On Ellis Powers’ hit that knocked Oregon’s quarterback out of the game: "Hey, we want to play by the rules, and you’re always walking that fine line because you’re trying to get these kids to play so hard. That’s what you've got to do on defense. We've just got to play smarter in terms of that kind of thing. … We don’t want to play dirty. We don’t want to give up any easy yards to them — that’s not good, disciplined football.”
On Jeremy Childs’ play: “He made two spectacular catches. … On the one-on-one, the deep ball, he went up and it was his. That’s the kind of play we have to have to really have a great pass game.”
On losing that underdog label: “I hope not. It’s kind of how Boise State’s always been and it’s a role that these kids play well in.”

quarterback
It cracks me up to think that Kellen Moore wasn't seriously recruited by any PAC-10 programs, because he was considered "too short." He'd be starting for every PAC-10 team save one (USC) right now. Great recruiting coup by the Broncos, especially in the coaches' ability to recognize Moore's exceptional talent, regardless of his height. This is a great example of why the BSU program has been so consistently successful for so long.
quarterback
The story was he was too short and a product of a system with very good receivers. He received no Pac-10 offers. He wanted to go to Washington State. I had seen him play several times in high school and I said they were crazy. They could have gotten him and the Bruns kid a receiver who is a freshman at the University of Washington and Kellen's little brother a 6'3'' receiver who is now going to BSU. These three guys have been playing together since they were little kids and they would have a unique, almost sixth sense between the quarterback and his receivers. Moore may have been too short but if you watched him play you saw unbelieveable poise, accuracy, quick release, great footwork, great touch, ability to see the whole field and the ability to throw the ball very hard. All of those traits showed up in the Oregon game. I said after watching him play a few times he would be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation by the time he was a junior or senior. He and his receivers broke many Washington State records at Prosser. They probably could have broke some national records but the coach ( Moore's dad) only let them play about 3 quarters a game because they would normally be so far ahead. If a six foot quarterback can play in the NFL, this kid will be the person.
You're right George
I have been watching Kellen since grid kids and have watched in awe at his abilities. His height means very little when you have the mental awareness he has when he is on the field. I agree with you and there have been many Mustang players who certainly weren't scouted like kids from big name high schools. He's going to have to take a few licks but if he can stay healthy BSU will be on the receiving of alot of "upsets". Can you imagine the points on the board the trifecta of Moore, Bruns and Moore would put up at BSU?
Not too late for Bruns
to move to BSU and join the Moore brothers, if Bruns does not get the play time at UW. I am really looking forward to these next four years with Kellen at QB. It would be awesome for the three to play together again and see first hand that sixth sense awareness George talked about.
Bruns..
Bruns.. Will you consider transferring to BSU? The three musketeers from Prosser playing for the Broncos. That would be pretty cool. Think about it.
Missing pieces????
There were two standout "freshman" receivers last year, Titus Young & Austin Pettis. Pettis caught everything thrown his way, Young dropped or fumbled a few but gave us dazzling deep plays. Is it me (I know it's not), or have the Coaches / play calling got alzheimers????? Seems like if the kids could do it as FRESHMEN, they could do even "More" as sophmores. Young has gotten a little bit of action. Pettis has been on field an awful lot yet not gotten any action. I believe those / these two guys could have made Oregon & Bowling Greens loses more / easier than they were.......JUST A THOUGHT.......Help my thought process
Thought
Interesting thought...I've had similar questions especially about Young since he is supposed to be blazing fast. Maybe it's the quarterback change?
