Lost in some of the euphoria of Boise State's 37-32 victory against Oregon on Saturday was the play of defensive end Mike T. Williams. Williams had seven tackles, but it was a series late in the fourth quarter that really stood out.
Williams did not get credit for any sacks — or tackles — on the drive, but he applied pressure on Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas on three consecutive plays. Thomas was sacked by Billy Winn and then threw two incomplete passes. I'm not sure it wasn't Williams that should have gotten credit for the sack.
On fourth down, Thomas rushed for 12 yards, but was shy of the first down. It was a huge stop for the Broncos after a pass interference penalty and 14-yard completion moved Oregon to the Boise State 45.
"I felt like somebody needed to make a play," Williams said after the game. "... I threw every move I had at them. I took it upon myself. Somebody had to make a play right now. Luckily, it was me."
Williams, the Broncos' lineman of the week for the Oregon game, has 15 tackles on the season.
Coach Chris Petersen said Williams' conditioning has improved greatly during his career, one reason he was able to make a difference in the fourth quarter.
"He's playing at a position that takes tremendous energy. When you get into the 70s and 80s in play number, that takes a lot," Petersen said Monday. "Mike has worked hard on conditioning. When he started, he couldn't go a long time. It's really great to see him being the one getting there."
• The Broncos seem to have come out of the Oregon game in relatively good health.
The same cannot be said for some of the Broncos' WAC rivals.
Idaho lost safety Shiloh Keo (shoulder) and wide receiver Maurice Shaw (ankle) in its loss to Utah State. Idaho coach Robb Akey said Monday he expects both players to be out several weeks.
Fresno State was without starting defensive tackles Cornell Banks (ankle) and Jon Monga (knee) for much of its double-overtime victory against Toledo.
Banks missed the game and is questionable for this week's game against UCLA. Monga was injured in the second quarter, did not play in the second half and is expected to miss several weeks.
True freshmen Logan Harrell and Chase McEntee and sophomore Mark Roberts will see increased time without Banks and Monga.
"We can’t worry about that. We have to play this week. We got to just keep rolling. Whatever guy is wearing that red hat between the stripes has got to play," Fresno State coach Pat Hill said.
Hawaii, though, got some good news. Quarterback Tyler Graunke did not break his hand against Oregon State, as was feared, and should be ready to go this week against San Jose State.
The Spartans will be without last year's leading receiver Kevin Jurovich (mono), who is not even practicing.
