South Barker tests fire use concept

Joe Jaszewski's story and pictures about the South Barker fire use fire shows that firefighters are not just letting it burn but are acting like peacekeeping forces ensuring it doesn't blow up into a conflagration.

The story gets away from the burn or not burn debates of 20 years when Yellowstone's fires were reaching a peak 20 years ago Tuesday then died down. But the Sawtooth Forest, which took the hard, not easy road by going the fire use route, is not out of the fire yet. Sunny clear weather is forecast all week, keeping the fire going the way they want but also elongating the potential for a front with winds that could make the fire bigger.

We should all hope they have success.

And this is something NEW?

$$ Costs to Date: $5,053,771

According to the national forest fire plan - a fire designated as WFU that they start suppressing can not go back to being a WFU. $$ Costs to Date: $5,053,771 (Sept 11, 2008) And more to be spent on rehab.

And I thought WFU was implemented to save the FS money? It seems we have spent a record amount this year on fires, yet only have burned roughly half of the acres of the past 2 years.
