Big week for Boise public school football teams

For the first time in four years and the second time since Timberline opened its doors in 1998, three of Boise's four public high school football teams won season openers. Capital topped Boise 14-0, Borah clobbered Columbia 41-12 and Timberline dismantled Kuna 48-27.

The same three winners also started the season off right in 2004 as Capital beat Centennial 41-24, Timberline beat Mountain View 28-3 and Borah topped Boise 35-6. Here's how the four Boise teams finished the 2004 season: Capital 7-4, Timberline 4-5, Borah 4-5 and Boise 0-9.

Capital was the only Boise school that won its season openers in 2007 and 2006, and Boise was the only opening-day winner in 2005. In 2003, Timberline was the only opening-day winner, and in 2002, all four teams lost to start the season

This quick look back got me thinking. Ten seasons have gone by since Timberline opened, so I decided to see how the four Boise schools fared over the past decade.

Capital comes out on top with a 10-year record of 59-44. The Eagles are the only Boise team with a winning record since 1998. Timberline is second with a record of 38-53, Borah is third at 27-66 and Boise is fourth at 7-84.

It's also worth noting that while Timberline has struggled recently, the Wolves have posted winning records twice, including an 8-2 season in 2003. Borah doesn't have a winning record over the past 10 seasons, but finished 5-5 in 1999.

Timberline's introduction clearly hit Boise the hardest.

In the three seasons prior to Timberline's opening, the Braves finished 3-6, 4-6 and 4-6. That's 11 wins in three seasons. Now, consider Boise's seven total wins and five 0-9 records in the 10 seasons since Timberline welcomed its first students.

A couple more notes.

Over the past 10 seasons, the best combined record for the four schools is 16-23, which they posted in 1999 as Capital was 8-3, Borah went 5-5, Timberline was 3-6 and Boise finished 0-9. The schools have also combined to post 15 wins in a season three times over the same 10-year span.

In 1997, the final season before Timberline's first, Capital, Borah and Boise finished a combined 17-14. Capital went 8-3, Borah finished 5-5 and Boise was 4-6. Borah lost to Highland that year in the first round of the state playoffs and Capital lost to Highland in the state semifinals.

Here's hoping the three wins last week are a sign of more to come. Despite losing last Friday, Boise kept it close against Capital, a team that advanced to the state championship game last November.

All four teams are back in action this week.

Capital and Borah meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in a rivalry game at Bronco Stadium, and I'll be there to provide a live blog and a story for Friday's paper. We'll also have a photographer on hand, so be sure to check back at IdahoStatesman.com/VarsityExtra for a photo gallery.

On Friday at Bronco Stadium, Boise hosts Kuna at 6 p.m. and Timberline hosts Skyview at 8:30 p.m. in a doubleheader.

NOTE: While Timberline is the newest high school in the district, Boise, which opened in 1902, is the oldest. Borah opened in 1958 and Capital opened in 1966.

BHS

Boise, at its current location, opened in 1902. However, didn't Boise really start serving students in 1881? Or is the 1881 date referring to Central School?

No Foresight, no leadership

A big shoutout should go to longtime Boise Schools Athletic Director Jim Carberry for not allowing ANY Boise school to actually build a football facility on their campus. Until Capital, Borah and Timberline actually get to play real home games, a state championship will never reside in Boise. There's your real reason for the complete deterioration of Boise Schools football. Thanks, Jim!

Nope

While I agree that it's pretty lame Boise schools don't play at home like schools in Canyon County and Meridian, the real reason Boise Schools stink at sports is because all the young families bought homes outside of Boise. The junior high teams in Meridian and in canyon county are loaded, with lots of depth. In all sports. Meanwhile, Boise junior highs have to combine schools to field teams in some sports.

WRONG

I am pretty certain that it wasn't Carberry that was not all for schools building their own stadiums on campus. If you recall, the super Stan Olsen, was very convincing when he gave away the current East JH site to BSU to build a track/HS football facility for BSU and maybe the BSD schools. If you want to blame anyone, blame Stan Olsen, he is an absolute idiot. I even recall a meeting with Carberry nearly three years ago that gave BSD schools permission to build stadiums on site. If I remember correctly, Carberry, Todd Simis, Brian Compton, Bob Clark, and Vince Mann were all in attendance as were numerous other district officials including principals and area directors.

From what I hear, Capital is in the works for building a stadium, Borah is too, Timberline has a good start but now are trying to figure out how to put in turf and lights without pissing off their neighbors, and Boise is getting turf within the next year or so with the possibility of adding telescoping bleachers that would roll over the track as well. Look at the NEW East JH, they already have turf installed.

Blame Stan Olsen not Jim Carberry!

If the current neighhood gentry aren't into youth sports...

Make them move! They would be Communists.

The Effects of Sprawl

The American choice to live in suburbia has changed the demographics of Boise! Jim Carberry has done what any rational person would have done. If you want to talk about not enough facilities, let's talk about not enough enrollments. Maybe Meridian would like to donate some of theirs?

Hey MDR!! Boise schools stink????

The last time I checked, it was a Boise school that made it to the State Championship game in football last year. Oh yeah, not to mention, it was Boise schools who won State in Track and Field too!

Chill out

The student population in Boise is decreasing. All that talent is being raised out west. I live in Boise. My kids are in Boise schools, I'm not anti-boise. I was just trying to put a different perspective out there. They aren't building too many houses in Boise school district. Most young families are tying to buy affordable housing, lots of Corey Barton and Hubble homes. Where are they building those homes? Where are they building all the nice homes within beautiful subdivisions? As long as there is growth in East Boise, Timberline can get better. Borah gets all the kids from the Bench which has affordable housing and south of the freeway. Boise is going to start getting some help with the boundary changes, they get Hillside Jr high now and Capitol will suffer because of that. Capitol has a lot of history, they tend to get all the kids that transfer using the open school district loophole.

I drove by the new Rocky Mountain High the other day. Have you seen the houses around that school? Talk about rich kids. The kind of kids whose parents will pay to send them to camps. Mountain View has no tradition, yet they are already elite in many sports. Why? Because they get all the kids that live between Overland and Lake Hazel. Have you seen Eagle High? The facilities are pretty amazing. The rich boosters pay for everything.

I follow wrestling. The Boise junior high city championships were weak. Some weight classes only had 5 kids. You go to Meridian or Canyon County and each school has a junior and varsity kid for each weight class.

And state baseball last

And state baseball last spring...

Wow, Carberry started moving on fields three whole years ago. Wow! It only took him the better part of a decade to get that going didn't it? Don't try to pass the buck to Stan Olsen. Any person who knows anything about the Boise School District is very aware that Carberry allowed the entire district to suffer at the expense of trying to keep Boise high school competitive at the 5A level in football. MDR, why do you think Meridian and Nampa middle schools are "loaded?" Anybody with a brain moving here from out of town would never even consider buying a home in Boise when you look at the beautiful new facilities being built in Meridian and Canyon County.
