Palin part of polarizing debate on aerial wolf killing
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s brilliant performance Wednesday night helped her reach into the mainstream of American voters so that they will keep listening about her qualifications to lead the nation in the event of a tragedy.
But her challenge is to keep urban and suburban voters with her after they have heard where she stands on polarizing issues like killing wolves from airplanes. Alaskan voters twice voted against aerial hunting of wolves so even there the issue is controversial.
But last month voters supported continuing the state’s wolf control program, which allows volunteer pilots and aerial gunners to shoot the predators from the air in the name of wildlife management. It passed with 55 percent of Alaskans’ support.
The program put in place five years ago to help moose and caribou populations rebound has brought an international tourism boycott and successful legal challenges by environmental groups and animal rights advocates. When Palin was elected governor she inherited the aerial gunning program and became one of its strongest defenders.
She defended the state government’s spending of $400,000 in taxpayer money for education about the program before the vote. When California Democratic Rep. George Miller, pushed a bill that would put additional restrictions on the aerial killing of predators, Palin chastised him in a letter with the states rights rhetoric westerners love.
Miller, she said, “doesn't understand rural Alaska, doesn't comprehend wildlife management in the North, and doesn't appreciate the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that gives states the right to manage their own affairs.”
There is no question many Idaho, Wyoming and Montana hunters would support aerial killing of wolves here. Her position only enhances her appeal to rural western conservative voters.
But even in Idaho the idea of running down wolves in an airplane until exhaustion isn’t the most appealing control method. In June, the killing of 14 wolf pups in their den by Alaska wildlife officials prompted an outcry there.
Anti-wolf leaders in the West are already giddy about the chances of Palin’s election. Robert Fanning, a Montana anti-wolf advocate recommended in an e-mail that his supporters view a picture picture of Palin with a caribou and pass it around.
“Think of the symbolism of that woman bringing home healthy game meat to feed her family and how she will protect the rights of 12 million American women and men to do the same,” Fanning wrote.
The same picture is used by animal rights activists to demonstrate she is a heartless killer. I think we will see an interesting debate about hunting and predator control before November.
I'm sighting in my rifle this weekend.

Who's polarizing?
So Palin is a polarizing figure? Not eco-wackos who run around the country filing lawsuits in every state in the union and using animals as tools to get what they want? Eco-wackos don't like multiple use, public use or any other use and Sarah Palin is polarizing? What Alaska or Canada does with their wolves is nobody else's business unless you're a socialist (see US Constitution and States rights) Aerial control and even poison in Alberta are used because hunting and trapping are not that effective in controlling wolf numbers. Government agents shoot wolves right now in Idaho from the air! Here's a couple of methods that Alaskan natives used and would still like to use: "Other methods of wolf control that are no longer practiced — and are not requested in the proposal — include wiping an animal's blood on knives or sharp rocks, he said. Wolves cut themselves as they licked away the blood, bleeding to death through their mouths. Also, some trappers would coil sharpened baleen or willow sticks into taut wads, cover them with fat and freeze the device, he said. Once gobbled by wolves, the wads would open, piercing stomachs and killing the animal, he said" (end quote) Now why do you suppose that native Alaskans would even attempt to control wolves in the first place? Here's the news article: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,324106,00.html
The article indicates that
The article indicates that the debate is polarizing not necessarily that Palin is polarizing.
No longer an issue of survival Nitrodan!

They did that for PURE SURVIVAL.
It's no longer an issue OF SURVIVAL -- it's an issue of HUNTING REVENUE silly boy!
They coulda just use cyanide pills in lieu of lasers ya know.
You are such a kitten. I bet you'd soil yourself then vomit blood and die if you watched seal clubbing. It's sickening stuff, SURE, but you need to grow a pair and not make any complacent scaredly cat pups, wolf boy. I'm serious. You are a king sized putz.
Ah AHHH! I didn't cut and paste!
Foreignoregonian -- Takes more courage to fight animal abuse
You're right, I, and the majority of cultured people, don't approve of animals being tortured. It appears that it is OK with you to torture animals. Maybe you should volunteer for the Canadians to spike you on the head.
Allowing torture of animals is not "having balls" -- it's ignorant.
It takes a lot more balls and courage to fight against animal abuse than to sit by and allow it or even encourage it.
I noticed you didn't respond when I pointed out the fact that wolves were only killed previously for pure survival. No comment to the truth? Palin isn't fooling anyone that killing wolves is for anyone's survival-- it is to INCREASE HUNTING REVENUES. $$$$$$$
I ride a BICYCLE exclusively. Why do I care about your point?
No REALLY. why?
I've only possessed a gun ONCE and that was because I found it in my front yard 25 years ago, apparently dropped by a thug. It was maybe a 9mm or .45 with a magazine and I emptied the clip and dry fired it numerous times. I didn't know that would probably RUIN it but then again it left me feeling disturbed and I scattered the amno it various locations and dumped the gun far from my home. I was young and stupid, yes indeed but I was in a gang neighborhood and felt more inclined to just get rid of it. I'm sorry and would never do that again but I was a fresh 18 year old.
Law abiding citizens have the right to carry arms and those who use guns badly and wrongly should not.I will go so far as to say that whether the hunts were legal or not they have NO BEARING WHATSOEVER on this election and I can't begin to see how they could. Obviously you are very scared of Ms. Palin and other things or you wouldn't go into hysterics and flag everybody but Betsy Ross.
You CAN do better.

Here's one thing to consider
In the event that they-McCain & Palin were elected and if McCain were to die, she would then take over the presidency. Do you think she is qualified to be our leader???
I personally don't believe in aerial killing of wolves.
No, it's three things
Photoguy:
Careful -- you're falling into the ColoradoWantsAttention trap:
1) Everybody already knows that a VP follows a President following death.
2) Who isn't?
3) Is that what you want others to consider? That you don't personally believe in aerial killing of wolves? Better to believe it -- it really does take place. Same with the clubbing of baby seals, the rape and starvation of small children, and the killing of innocents during warfare.
What is your point? That IF McCain is elected, and THEN dies in office, that Palin will start shooting wolves from the air? In reality, that would be very cool and totally entertaining. (I personally don't think that can happen. Take a deep breath.)
Most people agree with Photoguy's opinion
Shooting any animal from an airplane is sick.
Photoguy didn't say she would be shooting wolves herself-- he is insinuating that she would try to encourage its practice --

Thank you, Colorado:
I wasn't sure you knew what you were talking about (again!), so I looked up "insinuating" in the dictionary. Now I am sure!
The clarification helps.

Are rural conservative voters the majority in the West?
The West is the most urbanized part of America. Take Nevada. 95% live in Las Vegas or Reno.
Still they sell the most shotguns and rifles!

800 wolves brutally gunned down from airplanes with Palin's help
Alaska has brutally gunned down 800 wolves over the past 4 or 5 years from AIRPLANES! Sarah Palin has not only supported this barbaric treatment of our native wildife, she has in fact PROMOTED it with the help of that blood thirsty organization that prides itself on "conservation" -- the Safari Club. They hunt trophy animals -- like giraffes, zebras, etc. and call it "conservation." They also do it by "canned hunting" where the animals are actually in an enclosed area! It is sick and disgusting but they have a lot of money from rich people who want to pretend they went on an exciting "Safari" of the worst kind.
Of course, they're too dumb to realize that the term 'Safari' now means using a CAMERA to shoot the animal instead. I have heard a rumor that the Wildlife Experience in Colorado was founded and funded by Safari Club members -- anyone know is there is any truth to this rumor?
Wolves belong in the West -- it's time to get them back where they belong. They should have never been treated like outlaws. It is the livestock industry and Wildlife Services that are the OUTLAWS and CRIMINALS for doing this to our wildlife.

wolves
Wolves are the worst predator on this earth. They not only sport kill for fun but waste most of what they kill. The only way to get rid of them is to use aircraft or poison like the trappers did years ago.We better get them under control before it is to late. You granolas do not understand. If your job or lively hood was being destroyed by them you would think different.Let's bring them all to your backyards in the city and see what happens.TC
That could easily be said also about video game players!
Nobody scavenges the dead warriors like other animals do with the wolf kill.
Don't be stupid! Animals are far more COOPERATIVE than humans!
Hey Hunter -- Man is the worst predator on earth
Man himself is the worst predator on earth.

Welcome to Colorado
Hey, Colordao wolf lover,
If you want wolves in Colorado, that's great for you.
But stay the f out of Idaho's and Alaska's concerns about whether WE want them in our great state. ooooh, I guess that applies to all the environmental wolf-lovers in Washington DC too, and those in California, New Jersey and every where else.
YOUR nose should stop at YOUR state border.
Hey Pimp and wolf hater
You and yours destroyed OUR NATION'S wolves from 1900 and still are through "Wildlife Services."
We're all on to ya now buddy-- we know your tricks, your lobbying efforts, everything.
You don't OWN the wolves -- you have NO RIGHTS to destroy them either.
They are only populating 5% of their former range. They were here 10,000 years ago. They're not "new" to the landscape. It's your sleazy type that spreads LIES AND MYTHS ABOUT WOLVES.
Keep your ignorant comments to yourself Pimp and Wolf Hater!

Managing predator populations -unethical to increase hunting $$$
I think Hitler wanted Americans to keep their nose out of Germany at the time too, udapimp, the same way child molestors want law abiding citizens to keep their nose to themselves too
We live in a federal republic -- it's not the Republic of Idaho.
"Managing" predator populations has to be done scientifically for a biological/environmental purpose by law, not to increase hunting revenues!
People who support brutality to animals need help

Predatory Bureaucracy -- A Must Read
This book chronicles how the livestock industry in bed with lobbyists and legislators in DC worked from the 1900's to recent to 'sanitize the West" of any and all animal they deemed "a risk" to their free roaming livestock. They pushed the native animals out of their own homes by systematic poisoning, trapping, hunting, in the most grisly and disgusting ways.
http://www.predatorybureaucracy.com/book/
Currently, Wildlife Services kills 10,000 mammals per year, by poisoning, trapping, using cyanide poison on BLM lands, and other gasly means as a taxpayer "courtesy" to livestock owners. They are an agency to protect livestock NOT to protect wildlife. Their name is DECEPTIVE AND MISLEADING PURPOSEFULLY. Their main job is to KILL KILL KILL with YOUR YOUR YOUR money! to protect PRIVATE LIVESTOCK businesses! What a scam!
Tell Wildlife Services we don't want their kind of "services!"

One of the best essays ever written on tinkering with predators
Aldo Leopold. One of the best essays ever written…
“My own conviction on this score dates from the day I saw a wolf die. We were eating lunch on a high rimrock, at the foot of which a turbulent river elbowed its way. We saw what we thought was a doe fording the torrent, her breast awash in white water. When she climbed the bank toward us and shook out her tail, we realized our error: it was a wolf. A half-dozen others, evidently grown pups, sprang from the willows and all joined in a welcoming melee of wagging tails and playful maulings. What was literally a pile of wolves writhed and tumbled in the center of an open flat at the foot of our rimrock.
In those days we had never heard of passing up a chance to kill a wolf. In a second we were pumping lead into the pack, but with more excitement than accuracy: how to aim a steep downhill shot is always confusing. When our rifles were empty, the old wolf was down, and a pup was dragging a leg into impassable slide-rocks.
We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes - something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view.
Since then I have lived to see state after state extirpate its wolves. I have watched the face of many a newly wolfless mountain, and seen the south-facing slopes wrinkle with a maze of new deer trails. I have seen every edible bush and seedling browsed, first to anaemic desuetude, and then to death. I have seen every edible tree defoliated to the height of a saddlehorn. Such a mountain looks as if someone had given God a new pruning shears, and forbidden Him all other exercise. In the end the starved bones of the hoped-for deer herd, dead of its own too-much, bleach with the bones of the dead sage, or molder under the high-lined junipers.
I now suspect that just as a deer herd lives in mortal fear of its wolves, so does a mountain live in mortal fear of its deer. And perhaps with better cause, for while a buck pulled down by wolves can be replaced in two or three years, a range pulled down by too many deer may fail of replacement in as many decades. So also with cows. The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain. Hence we have dustbowls, and rivers washing the future into the sea.
Go Palin

Sarah Palin -- intellect of a 12 year old
I can't believe you think this "dumb as a box of rocks" woman is a "person with brains." Are you kidding? She has the intellect of a perhaps a 12 year old. Why are the Republicans supporting such a lame candidate?
In case you haven't noticed, Palin is simply reciting what her handlers are telling her to say. She knows nothing -- has no knowledge of what's going on in the U.S. as far as domestic or foreign policy issues -- oh, sorry, she knows how to dress a moose.
Former aides have said that Palin was slow to learn new information and had an especially difficult time with foreign concepts. She attended 4-5 schools before finally graduating -- wonder why?
I am shocked that the Republican party would embrace this idiot. They must be desperate to win back the far right wing. She can't hold her own when interviewed spontaneously.
And who is this red haired woman on the Larry King show? Is she a joke or what? She looks like a stepford wife on steroids!
