Weekend live music pick: Garaj Mahal
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 12:08pm.
UPDATE: Jazz on the Grove packed in a nice crowd, but did Garaj Mahal play actual jazz? It was debatable during parts of the evening, when the quartet went on extended tears that appealed to jam-band fans. The fusion group — which brought a wicked new drummer named Sean Rickman — definitely set a record for the most notes played during a concert at the Grove. I'm not sure how musicians get any more technically proficient.
Was it too much for some people? I suspect it was. But lots of fans hung around for both sets, including an encore past 10 p.m.! It was like Alive After Five on a cool Friday night. Congratulations again to the Downtown Boise Association for presenting Jazz on the Grove each year. Boise needs more jazz — and challenging music.
-------------------
Apologies, Stone Temple Pilots fan, but I can't recommend a possible meltdown from Scott Weiland over a free gig by the mighty Garaj Mahal, one of the planet's elite jazz fusion groups. These are sick musicians. Sick, sick, sick. I hope the "Jazz on the Grove" crowd can handle it.
Garaj Mahal performs tonight at The Grove in Downtown Boise. Kevin Kirk and Onomatopoeia open at 5:30; Garaj goes on at 7:50. Yes, it's free.
(STP tix went for $10 over Labor Day weekend at ICTickets, but now you'll pay $25-$45 plus fees again.)
If you're curious about the rhythmic-frog reference in the Garaj Mahal article linked above, listen to the quartet perform "Semos" here.

We Will Miss You
No Deeds=I'm going
Thanks for letting me know before I bought a ticket. Enjoy your sickness.
brmc, not stp
we went to see brmc, and weren't disappointed- they rocked! but the crowd was apalling- i guess because many hadn't heard of brmc they just weren't interested in listening. couldn't believe the folks just standing in front of the stage- no movement. how do you love rock n roll & not move to that music?
hope to see brmc again somewhere that the folks are into their music- they are a good, old fashioned rock band.
we left after waiting over an hour for stp to come out- don't know if they ever did.
STP
What's Up with the wait? Are the pompus band members too cool to be on time some people have to work the next day Music started out sketchy but got better through the night 1st Band was awesome!!!!!!
its funny when stp was late
its funny when stp was late (hour and a half) coming out all i could hear in the crowd was, "is scott weiland overdosing in his trailer" now that some rock star status if you ask me.
Well...you have to live up to your fans' expectations?
It's like you expect Ellen to marry a guy.
STP by the numbers
Number of people at the show: About 4,000.
Number who bought $10 tickets: Around 1,000.
Cost of noise curfew fine that Stone Temple Pilots paid: Probably around $7,500. (I'll get an actual confirmed figure Monday. The curfew kicks in at 10:30 p.m. and the cash register keeps cha-chinging as time goes by. STP played late knowing they'd have to pay up.)
WHAT
There is a noise ord for that place? Why the hell is it even there then? What a complete waste! Shut it down. It's a lousy venue anyway...even if they do make it smaller.
