Idaho Republicans look to eliminate the competition
Submitted by Kevin Richert on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 9:39am.
At a time in the calendar when Republicans might want to reach out to Idaho voters, they seem determined to get rid of the competition.
First came a lawsuit, supported by the Idaho GOP, that sought to strike independent Senate candidate Rex Rammell from the Idaho ballot, saying Rammell had failed to collect the 1,000 valid signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. The Idaho Supreme Court made short work of the complaint Wednesday, siding with Republican Secretary of State Ben Ysursa, the elected official charged with overseeing Idaho's election process, and declining to second-guess the county clerks who checked Rammell's petitions.
Now comes this KTVB story that says Rammell, independent candidate Pro-Life and Libertarian Kent Marmon have been asked to bow out of the Senate race. At least a couple of the calls came from Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Sali, says KTVB.
The logic behind all of this is that Rammell, Pro-Life and Marmon are apt to draw most of their votes from GOP Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, bolstering Democratic candidate Larry LaRocco's chances of pulling an upset.
The GOP is certainly sending mixed messages. Risch, who says he knew nothing about the anti-Rammell lawsuit, continues to cite his double-digit lead in the polls (including a LaRocco poll from May). Risch's optimistic read of the race doesn't square with Republicans' efforts to clear the field.
Republicans risk a backlash. Conservative voters inclined to support Rammell, Pro-Life or Marmon should be concerned about Republicans' efforts to limit their electoral choices. And since Republican candidates still need some independent support to win congressional or statewide races, the GOP risks alienating independent voters already turned off by efforts to close party primaries.
And let's put these recent events into context. Last fall, after the Larry Craig scandal broke, Republican leadership closed ranks around Risch — months before the primary season. This tactic may have dissuaded at least one other prominent would-be candidate, Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, and drew fire from Rammell and Marmon. It worked in the short run; Risch easily dispatched a field of seven unknowns in the GOP primary. Quick, name all seven and win a free 32 oz. fountain drink.
I'm a sucker for ironic timing. This week, GOP presidential candidate John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin may have scored a few points by painting themselves as mavericks who aren't afraid to buck the party establishment. Meanwhile, Idaho Republicans seem to be engaging in the kind of machine politics that could backfire in the long run.

Perfect points KR
There is a disconnect between and among the top of the GOP ticket, the GOP, the Idaho GOP Party, Idaho Republicans, and Idaho Conservatives. This fissure is not new and it is getting worse.
The selection of Governor Palin has indeed closed some ideological ranks within the GOP, but getting people to change their political character is not so easy. Just as letters to the editor (today I think) complain of both McCain and Obama yard signs being stolen. There are plenty of jerks to go around and they always embarrass the candidates.
But the dirty pool played by the "R's" (my Party) in outing Larry LaRocco for 14-year-old indescretions and the situation you cite - if accurate, show the very low and dark side of party politics. We should be better, and some of us will work to make it so.
Sheesh! It is not that hard to do what is legal, fair, and right.

Risch risks losing conservative votes
Lt. Gov. Risch will win a one-on-one against former Rep. LaRocco. But a five way race with three others more conservative than Risch, while marginally more problematic, Risch should win anyway. Nonetheless, better to be safe than sorry, thus the subterfuge attempting to get the other candidates off the ballot or to quit the race.
What these maneuvers on behalf of Risch, by thinly-veiled third parties, do expose, is his insecurity with conservative voters across rural Idaho. Risch is a lawyer. From Boise. He's not LDS. He's supported conservation proposals such as Crapo's Owyhee Initiative & Simpson's White Clouds Wilderness legislation. He directed the wholesale slaughter of Rex Rammell's elk farm escapees. His roadless area proposal is a total giveaway to environmentalists. So yes, it does make sense to try to have the other candidates removed from the ballot. But I'm still confused why Bill Sali is in the middle of this? Doesn't he have his own race to worry about?
Follow the money
Either indirectly from Risch donors, or perhaps directly from Risch's campaign. Just a hunch.
A Sterling Example of Bill Sali's Leadership!
It's perfectly clear why Bill Sali got involved in this -- it's because he's a True Idaho Patriot. The Hero of the Owyhees knows that it's unfair for Democrats to run only one person for Senate against 4 Patriots. Just think of the implications; if there are more than 2 people running, Liberal Larry LaRock could win the election with less than 50% of the vote; maybe even as little as 25.37%. Bill Sali knows that's not fair!

So, what you are saying is, BSF,
is that Bill Sali is the only person who has the right to exercise his choice to run for office as a Republican in the state of Idaho? And he alone gets to decide who Idaho republicans (or citizens for that matter) have to choose from?
Yeah, um, that's not patriotism, that is called Imperialism.
Duh!
Of course that's what I'm saying. And it's not Imperialism, it's Enlightened Absolutism. Please learn the difference.

It's more dumb Yanquis taking our crap. Get it right?
I'm so happy for them.
Billy, the bully, protecting little Jimmy?
Sounds like a Soprano's episode.
Idaho's GOP act like thugs; Intimidation, manipulation, hidden money and lies.
I like having candidates representing various parties, it makes our democracy stronger.
May the best man (not the best connected) win!
Sounds like Republicans and the Statesman ...
... use the same tactics ... search and destroy without thinking.
