A quick injury update from coach Chris Petersen:

Ryan Winterswyk was injured in practice Thursday. He had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday and is questionable for Bowling Green, probable for Oregon.

Kyle Gingg had a minor injury and will return for Bowling Green.

Tailback Doug Martin had a couple dings early in the game and was held out for precautionary reasons. He could have returned.

Left tackle Nate Potter could return for Bowling Green.

Boise State defensive end Ryan Winterswyk will not play in Saturday’s game against Idaho State.

Winterswyk, a sophomore starter, has an injury and coach Chris Petersen will address the situation after the game, Boise State spokesman Max Corbet said.

Freshman Jarrell Root was named as the starter in Winterswyk’s place.

Also, senior linebacker Kyle Gingg did not start. He is in uniform, but he was a game-time decision with an injury. Sophomore Derrell Acrey started instead.

Here are my three parting thoughts about tonight’s game, as part of our partnership with KBOI’s pregame show.

1. Watch the aggressiveness and physicality of the defense. That was a huge emphasis in the offseason and the key to fixing the Broncos’ run defense.

2. The Broncos need to find some new playmakers on special teams. Since Idaho State has strong special-teams units, this will be a good trial run. The leading contenders for major roles include Doug Martin, Aaron Tevis, Travis Stanaway and Hunter White, who was the scout special teams player of the year last year.

3. It will be interesting to see how the linebacker rotation plays out. Aaron Tevis makes his starting debut, but Derrell Acrey will play — particularly in passing situations. The competition for playing time will be decided based on who performs on game day.
