The Palin pick: Idaho blog reactions

Some Friday morning blog reactions to John McCain's vice presidential pick — Alaska Gov., Idaho native and University of Idaho alum Sarah Palin.

• From Republican Clayton Cramer: "I am somewhat concerned about her relative lack of experience in government. She has a bit more than Obamessiah, but less than I would prefer — and none in foreign policy areas. Of course, anyone who criticizes her relative lack of experience is in no position to support Obamessiah!"

• From Republican Dennis Mansfield: "John McCain knows strategy...and he knows combat...and he knows how to win elections. His choice was superb."

• From The Blogmother at the Democratic site Red State Rebels: "OK, I'll admit this is an audacious choice (though hardly historic, since the Dems had a woman VP candidate 24 years ago). Good for him. But Palin is even younger and less experienced than Barack Obama. With no national experience, will voters feel she's prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency of a man who turns 72 today?

"Also of note: She is a Sandpoint native and a U of I grad. That will probably translate into a percentage point or two in Idaho from people who 'knew her when,' but many of those folks would probably be voting for McCain anyway. I doubt she'll hurt our Dems as much as Mitt Romney would have."

• From Republican Adam Graham: "She’s smart, good looking, conservative, truly pro-life and a great lady. ... (But) if she’s inaugurated, in a period of less than two years, Sarah Palin would go from being the former mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (pop. 8,471) to being one heartbeat away from the presidency. That’s very hard to sell, but if McCain wants a woman who will be acceptable to the conservative base, all he’s got is Palin and a few conservative members of Congress."

Graham gave a Palin a 0.5 on a 10-point "stupid scale." Can't quibble with Graham's 10-point "stupid pick," Carly Fiorina — although I'd have loved to see how that choice would have played on the Hewlett-Packard campus.

• From the left-leaning the unequivocal notion: "It looks like the McCain camp can no longer use the 'no experience' argument."

• From Meridian blogger Joel Kennedy: "She apparently has good conservative credentials and seems to be very pro-drilling, but the choice kind of throws out any 'experience' advantage Sen. McCain might have had. (On the other hand, it didn't matter for the first President Bush in running Dan Quayle against Lloyd Bentsen.) ...

"I'm still backing Sen. McCain (identity politics-wise, I really have no choice, with a retired Navy officer running with someone with Idaho connections), but I think he could have made a better choice."

My take: I can't see Palin delivering many electoral votes to McCain, any more than I can see Sen. Joe Biden delivering many electoral votes to Obama. Perhaps more interesting is the potential effect of Palin on Idaho races. Palin's social conservative credentials will probably play well with Idahoans uneasy with McCain. Her Idaho ties won't hurt conservative turnout, either. Boost to incumbent Rep. Bill Sali, Senate candidate Jim Risch, and maybe some GOP legislative candidates.

For Idaho Republicans who may have been rooting for a McCain-Mitt Romney ticket, Palin isn't a bad consolation prize.

did you see....

how completely uncomfortable and awkward McCain looked onstage as Palin gave her speech today? if I can read body language I think he was already starting to feel that this was a BIG mistake....if any presidential nominee of recent years needed to pick a VP who's number one qualification was that they could quickly and competently fill the office of president in case something were to happen....it is John McCain. once everyone stops swooning about how unconventional (and female) this pick is, this will start to sink in...and fast. this is the antithesis of 'puting country first'. this is a pandering, flighty, irresponsible pick he will HUGELY regret...mark my words.

It looked like explaining a Vegas marriage to your folks.

Sarah Palin

Since Sarah Palin is relatively unknown, I was surprised by McCain's choice, but ecstatic that he has returned to his fiscally conservative, reform-minded roots in making this selection. It's not about her gender... it's about her intelligence, her desire to cut wasteful spending, and her courage to actively work for government reform on behalf of the common good for the people she represents.

please....

don't tell me this is not about her gender. a man with her bio would NEVER have been picked. nothing bad about her, per se, but she is absolutely not ready for this....glaring inexperience for someone who as early as next Jan would have to be ready to take the reigns as the most powerful person in the world at a time when so many crises are facing us....I cannot take the risk....and I think a sober appraisal will bring others to the same conclusion....

Agreed.

I think the Republicans listened too much to the media hype over the 'PUMAs', and mistakenly thought there were a massive number of women who vote only based on their 'gender', and not with their values.

Let me clarify...

Surely Sarah Palin's gender figured into the equation when she was chosen as the Vice Presidential candidate; however, I will not be voting for her because of (nor in spite of) her gender, but rather on the basis of her passion for doing the right thing for the taxpayers.

I agree Sharon, with your reasoning,

but perhaps McCain should have chosen Ron Paul.
A person who has always tried to do the right thing
for the taxpayers and one who does have experience.

Mom, I dated Justine the Librarian!

Palin VP

I cant believe it, McCain declined Gov. Romney with all his economic wisdom, for the governor of alaska. She reminds me of the church lady on Saturday Night Live. God Bless the death of he republican party.

hmmmm...

well I have to disagree with that one....just my opinion but I think she is MUCH prettier than Dana Carvey...

Wrong SNl cast memeber

Nah, she looks more like Tina Fey. They have just about the same amount of credentials to be VP too! I love this choice because its going to make McCain look like an idiot...to everyone but the right wingnuts, of course.

She looks like a WAC!

Brilliant!

McCain pulled the rug right out from under Obama, drowning out the historic(?) Obama speech! The choice for Palin has left the dems with their mouths gaping wide open (but that may have something to do with Palin's amazing brains and beauty). Boy, it's gonna be a good race!

Identity politics wins. Affirmative action for everything.

Is this better than the past president picking process? Obama & Palin.Who are they? Looks new & a little weird to me.

So did Python in the seventies.

I'll lay off after I get to say, "Mel, KISS MY GRITS"!
