McCain's running mate is an Idaho native (UPDATED)
| Share |
Speculation about Sen. John McCain's running mate has turned toward a darkhorse candidate and Idaho native: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Palin, 44, was born in Sandpoint. According to this Almanac of American Politics biography, her family moved to Alaska when she was three months old. She returned to Idaho to attend the University of Idaho, where she received a bachelor's degree in communications in 1987.
This University of Idaho biography describes Palin as a "rising star." Well, that was certainly prescient.
My rough guess on the national politics: I can't see Palin delivering many electoral votes to McCain, any more than I can see Sen. Joe Biden delivering many electoral votes to Sen. Barack Obama. Perhaps more interesting is the potential effect of Palin on Idaho races. Palin's social conservative credentials will probably play well with Idahoans uneasy with McCain. Her Idaho ties won't hurt conservative turnout, either. Boost to incumbent Rep. Bill Sali, Senate candidate Jim Risch, and many some GOP legislative candidates.
For Idaho Republicans who may have been rooting for a McCain-Mitt Romney ticket, Palin isn't a bad consolation prize.
Stay tuned for more.

Lies! All Lies!
It'll be Bill Sali, the True Conservative Leader in Congress! "Sarah" Palin has a girl's name, which will make everyone laugh at him. Even Anti-Sali Socialist Richert falls into the trap here by referring to him as "her". That just shows the Socialist world-view of the MSM, where they think that the rugged individuals of Alaska would ever elect a woman as Governor, which is not what the Founding Fathers envisioned.
My Patriotic Pro-Sali Website!
Hmmmm
The jolly old corporate elf as Veep. Hmmm, good thing hell hasn't frozen over yet. Cheney still has a chance to get there.
Still it is a good thing that Idaho doesn't mean squat to a national election.
Come on BSF
We all knew it was going to be Palin all along. KR was just using misdirection to lead us away from the obvious choice...
Nice try, John
Barack's choice of Joe Biden helps influence me that he will select solid, proven people to surround him in the White House.
John's pick of a woman, I think, is just that. The Hillary surrogate. I say this not to diminish Sarah Palin's character and potential, simply a comment on McCain's ability to choose his circle of influence. He chose a Hillary surrogate.

Palin
Well, McCain has sure locked up the Idaho and Alaska electoral votes, not unlike George Herbert Hoover Walker Bush locked up the Indiana electoral votes by choosing Dan Quayle in 1988. And, like Quayle, she's telegenic.
Way to go birthday boy!
I know a few
disenfranchised Hillary voters who were warm to McCain already. I will bet they will be on board fully when they hear this news. As will many Hillary voters who did not get much of a voice at their convention. EXCELLENT pick.
Voting for someone soley because of their gender is...
STUPID!!! I would hope the Hillary voters would have a better reason for voting for McCain/Palin.
Ahh yes...the genital vote...
There are obviously some who wanted Hillary simply because of gender, but to vote only for the vagina ignores how Hillary's politics is diametrically opposed to this woman.
I still had first in two threads!
AP not fast enough for you all?
It shouldn't surprise me
in this current political atmosphere but it does: to vote for someone simply because she's a woman is ridiculous in the least. Hillary was NOT the best candidate and thats a proven fact. Would you like to listen to that voice for 4 yrs???????
This tactic of McCains (and thats just what it is) is just pandering to the women and is hoping to pull some Hillary supporters in......thats all.
At least now Mc Warmonger will have to stop saying Obama doesn't have enough experience to be President. Palin has 3 yrs LESS experience than Obama in politics. Wonder how many homes she owns???? Better not ask the warmonger! Every question he's asked is answered with; "when I was a POW........" Thats his only claim to fame & he's riding it like a dead horse. If you are truly better off now than you were 8 yrs ago, then vote for this "bushy" cuz thats exactly what you'll get for the next 4!
Not the best candidate...
Hillary indeed was not the best candidate, Biden was, and Richardson next. Both had tons more experience than Clinton. But I am surprised you would select a person based upon their voice...
Palin was not a pandering pick....McCain wanted a non-senator, non-DC insider, someone with executive experience which he does not have, nor does Obiden. He also wanted impeccable conservative credentials. And Palin was picked for VP, not for president.
I am better off today, seven years without the US being attacked, Al Queda on the run, and now a pick from an oil state who knows our history - that we bought Alaska for it's oil, not to make it a carribou sanctuary.
Things are actually looking up.
Seward bought Alaska for the oil???
Didn't realize the Republicans were owned by big oil as far back as 1867!
Not the oil
Seward championed the purchase of Alaska for the mines, forests and furs, as well as its strategic location for navigation. Oil was a lucky bonus that came later. Way later.
As an interesting side note, Seward's Day is celebrated as a holiday in Alaska - supposedly it's illegal to serve alcohol on that day in the state.
Of course to both
I misspoke/miswrote. I was referring to making Alaska a state and of course we didn't buy it into statehood and those two events are far apart.
One of the major concerns (as then an Okie, although a child) was that Tulsa might no longer be the "Oil Capital of the World," as home of Phillips, and others. There was a bit of anti-statehood sentiment. But of course securing Alaska oil was a big piece nationally in the vote for statehood. (Not for the purchase - thanks the sharp eyes).
Nice
I was saying it a month ago when I first heard of the possibility- good choice!
Good choice to pull votes
Good choice for a younger person
Good choice for a women's perspective (soccer mom too)
Good choice for the party- think 2016 people.
Party of Change?
This really begs the question as to which is the party of change. Obama brings in a career politician for the last 30 years and McCain brings in a fresh face from Alaska. Obama made a bad choice and McCain did not. Obama brought in everything that he says is wrong with this country by choosing a career politician. I know he was trying to get some experience but what he came up with was one big contradiction.
Cause a first term gov in an ethics probe is just the change
we want...well, considering the justice dept debacles of the Bush term, she'll fit right in.
Ridiculous
Maybe McCain should have chosen Britney. She has an even fresher face and just slightly less governing experience. Is that our criteria now?? Biden is not a career politician - he is a seasoned, wise statesman with unequaled foreign relations expertise and his knowledge of the current war situation is on par with Generals. Palin's foreign policy experience is limited to a gas deal with Canada. The thought of Palin being one heartbeat away from the Presidency sends a chill all the way from the Arctic.
A chill
But not nearly the chill of a lesser experienced Obama being the heartbeat of the President.
Spears doesn't look as good naked in the mandatory sex scandal.
So there.
SUMMARY: GOD HELP US ONE AND ALL!
Goodnight Gracie.
