Solange Knowles hates on Idaho

The Los Angeles Times profiles Beyonce Knowles' younger sister, Solange, who recalled (not fondly) the time she lived in Moscow.

In 2004, Solange Knowles married football player Daniel Smith at age 17. Later that year, she gave birth to a son, and the family moved to Moscow while Smith attended college.

"We were probably the only black people there other than those on the football and basketball teams," Knowles told the Times. "There was no sense of diversity or culture."

Solange released her sophomore album, "Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams," this week.

Unemployment as low as anywhere in Idaho Falls

Reuters reports that unemployment rates were higher in most U.S. metropolitan areas in July when compared to a year earlier.

The lowest rates were found in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at 2.4 percent, and Rapid City, South Dakota, at 2.5 percent. Idaho Falls was the second lowest with an unemployment rate of 2.5 percent.

El Centro, California, had the highest unemployment rate of 23.3 percent, followed by Yuma, Arizona, at 20 percent.

State sues car dealership

The Spokesman-Review reports that the state of Idaho is suing the former Post Falls Mazda dealership, saying it sold third-party service contracts then pocketed the money, leaving at least 19 consumers without that coverage.

The Idaho Attorney General Consumer Protection Division said it believes that Post Falls Mazda, and Mark Gibson, the president of its parent company, "retained more than $50,000 of consumers’ money for goods or services that were never provided."

However, Stephen McCrea, Gibson's attorney, said the attorney general is making a "mountain out of a molehill." Post Falls Mazda is a business that failed, he said. As with any business failure, many debts were not paid.

Sidewalk biking on the agenda

A current Idaho Falls City ordinance states that anyone over 15 can't ride a bicycle on any sidewalk within the city limits.

The city plans to repeal that law this week and go by the state law that allows bikes to be on sidewalks if cyclists yield to pedestrians.

Idaho Falls Police Chief Steve Roos expects this ordinance to be repealed at Thursday night's city council meeting, forgoing the usual three readings since it's not a controversial issue.

Obama preps for Denver in Billings

You could say that the speech Barack Obama will give tonight at the Democratic National Convention was inspired by the rugged beauty of Montana.

The Illinois senator was working on it when he made his fifth trip to Montana to address a group in Billings’ Riverfront Park on Wednesday.

The Billings Gazette talks about the speech, preparations for it, the crowd and Obama’s traveling entourage, among other things.

Talkin' nukes in Idaho Falls

Workers from Department of Energy sites and national laboratories around the country converged on Idaho Falls this week for the federal agency's annual Integrated Safety Management Workshop.

Shane Johnson, principal deputy assistant energy secretary in the DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy, discussed the hot topic of nuclear energy.

The Post-Register says the DOE expects 23 license applications for new nuclear plants to be submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by the end of the year.

It's been nearly three decades since the last application for a new nuclear reactor in the United States. Currently, there are 104 reactors in the U.S. producing 20 percent of the country's energy.

Idaho National Laboratory has been identified by the DOE as the place where a new reactor will be developed as part of the Next Generation Nuclear Project.

I WAS thinking Who is Solange Knowles...

but now that I know it's still sorta no biggie.

Moscow needs no culture...not even yogurt that makes you regular.

I wouldn't call that "hating on"

Just misinformed. There's a lot of culture in Moscow! color of skin isn't the ONLY factor. Solange schmolange

name 3 cultural events

in moscow. 'Heritage' parades isn't what she means. She was probably refering to the cultural wasteland that is the rural west. Montana's not a hot-spot for theater either. Or live music. Or art shows. Don't take it personally that we live in a rest-stop between Denver and Seattle. Look at a map if you don't believe me. Notice the ONE ROAD leading to anywhere in the state. If they didn't need gas, Boise wouldn't exist.

An accurate comment

Not "hating on" by any means.

Let me guess

BoiseBlue, your exposure to Moscow included driving from Hwy 95 to the parking lot for the football game two years ago (and then directly back the way you came). I'm also guessing you believe Boise is a cultural hotspot. After all, there's a Cheesecake Factory here now.

There's a Knitting Factory too!

Still the dame factor hasn't improved, has it?

There is plenty of culture in Moscow/Pullman

I'm just guessing it wasn't the kind of culture that Solange was searching for.

So it's cool if

Solange Knowles points out that Moscow Idaho is white bread country, but if I roll down to south Georgia and come back running my mouth about how I was the only white person for miles, I'm a racist?

Bite me Solange.

You've got to be kidding

Her comment about no sense of diversity is a joke. What is it called when a minority is racist??? Oh yeah, "acceptable behavior"...

So when I go down to East LA or Harlem, and they don't have a fly fishing shop, can I claim lack of diversity???

I fly fish in Harlem

all the time! The fly fishing shop is on 32nd, just past the Starbucks.

Her label or somebody said it could be hard to sell her record.

MMM, because she ain't industry standard jiggy or something?

This exists EVERYWHERE.

One more diva and the cannibals will refuse to dine here!

Idaho State Prison...

...has lots of diversity. And they come from every corner of the State. They are not football or basketball players....but probable cousins or something like that.

Ms. Gowler Owes Readers and Ms. Knowles an Apology

The editor of Idaho Newsreader, Ms. Vicki Gowler, did the readers of the Statesman and Ms. Knowles a disservice when she chose a sensational and completely inaccurate headline for the article, "Solange Knowles hates on Idaho." Ms. Knowles was quoted simply as saying that during the time she spent in Moscow, there were no other black folk other than those who played sports for the UI. She made no judgments, just observations. How is this "hate on Idaho"?

That's not journalism, Ms. Gowler, it's simply inflammatory rhetoric.

It was in the LA Times, pal. Makes the story moot anyway.

Read the LA Times Article, F'Oregonian

Read the linked article, and then direct me to the sentence in which she was quoted as saying anything that can be interpreted as "hate" for Idaho?

You are confused. I never made such a claim. Read ME.

I said it was the LA TIMES, go figure.

Who did you intend to holler at?

The Statesman editor that posted the link used the word in their title and I didn't see where it came from either. It's not related to much unless it's hip speak.

I read most of it, found it the usual bore. If you construe it as a swipe at blacks or something, that is weird. You might want to pick fights with a dozen other posters here.

It's not my cup of Diet A&W but it IS a business and America. Bring the Noise.

Who's Confused?

The link Ms. Gowler included in her post was to an LA Times story. I assume that's the story she used to base her claim that Ms. Knowles was "getting her hate on."

So, once again, F'Oregonian, point me to the sentence in this LA Times story (the one linked by Ms. Gowler or whoever made this post) that supports the claim made in the headline.

It must be you..

You keep asking a bunch of questions and twisting the angle until I could care less.

If you don't understand me don't ask me to explain it to you. I don't know what you're talking about either. Move along.

Don't accuse me of being an idiot because I'm talking about urban stuff because I'll give you a Thin Lizzy. Go bother Spoof or Zekie.

MUSIC TALENT VS POPULARITY

Perhaps lil sis didn't have the time to visit the U and check out Hamp. The very man who helped break the color barrier "kicked it" in Moscow. He did have the advantage of having talent. Does it make me look smarter when I use quotation marks with the Ebonics?
