Johnson, Brotzman on award lists

Boise State senior tailback Ian Johnson is one of 43 candidates for the Doak Walker Award, the school announced Thursday.

Johnson leads active NCAA players in touchdowns (46) and rushing touchdowns (45). He is second in rushing yards (3,417 yards) and carries (602). Johnson needs 1,058 yards to become the Broncos' all-time leading rusher.

The Doak Walker Award is given annually to the nation's top running back. Arkansas' Darren McFadden won the award in 2006 and 2007. USC's Reggie Bush took the award in 2005. The semifinalists will be announced Nov. 11 and the finalists picked on Nov. 24.

Idaho's Deonte Jackson, Nevada's Luke Lippincott and Southern Miss' Damion Fletcher — three backs that Boise State will face this year — are also on the list.

Lippincott led the WAC in rushing yards last season. Jackson was second and Johnson was third.

• Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman, a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award last season, has been named to the award's preseason watch list. Brotzman, a sophomore, is among 30 candidates for the award, given annually to college football's top kicker.

Brotzman made 16-of-18 field goal attempts in 2007, missing a 51-yarder against Washington and a 30-yarder against Southern Miss. He connected on all 66 extra-point attempts.

12:13 p.m. -- What is it with Oregon quarterbacks and knee injuries? Many will remember that Dennis Dixon, a Heisman candidate, injured his knee late last season, dooming what had been a magical season for the Ducks.

Nate Costa, who was expected to be Oregon's starting quarterback before injuring his left knee, will now miss the entire season and not just six to eight weeks. When doctors were performing surgery on the knee today, they discovered Costa also had a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Tough luck for the third-year player, who was injured in a non-contract drill on Aug. 20. This was the third surgery on his left knee. He had one in high school and one last season.

Sophomore Justin Roper will start against Washington in the Ducks' season opener Saturday night.

Boise State visits Oregon on Sept. 20 in its biggest non-conference game of the year.

Roper merely piloted the

Roper merely piloted the Ducks to the pasting of South Florida last year in the Sun Bowl. No loss for the Ducks there, except that Chip Kelly will have to use less spread- which, given the bulk of available personnel, he should probably do anyway.

Not huge dropoff

with Roper I agree.
Play a bit last year and so it's not party time for us.
Tough game to win to be sure, alot has to go right for us.

Biggest non-conference?

Biggest game of the year. Win it and BSU can afford to lose one conference and still have decent year. Think what Boise could do with two real games in non-conference

Thank you

"Think what Boise could do with two real games in non-conference"

Thank you. I'm not opposed to playing the Bowling Greens of the world but is there some reason why we can't schedule TWO BCS opponents in one year??

the reason

The reason is probably to keep at 11-1 or 12-0 not 9-3

Roper is a step

down from Costa, simply because he lacks the dual threat ability.

Watch out for J. Masoli, though - he'll get snaps against UW and could climb to #1 on the chart by the time Sept. 20 rolls around.

Chris Harper will also play, though that will be situationally (the kid is a freak in terms of his athleticism).

Cool down dude

I don't think he mentioned that this injury makes the Oregon game any more or any less winnable. This was a pretty straight forward post with no assumptions made.

Must agree with deschutes

Roper was my pick for starter at the end of last year. Though Stewart did have a HUGE hand in Oregon winning that bowl game. Stew did open up the field for him and hopefully JJ can do the same this year.

Roper wont the that big of step down from Costa. That is if he can keep himself on the field and not in the training room.

OH NOES!

OREGON QB OUT FOR SEASON!!!!!!!

Nice headline Murphy. Break out the party favors and champagne cause this sucker's in the bag, am I right?

Give me a break and lay off the blue and orange kool-aid, last I checked you're still a beat writer, not a PR spinster.

"The reason is probably to

We might not go 9-3 from multiple BCS opponents if we played them more often. It sorta irritates me when Idaho plays a tougher non-conference schedule then us and they certainly don't deserve it. I think most BSU fans feel the team can hang with the big boys most seasons, but we sure don't get many chances to prove it.

Blame the BSU AD

for not having a tougher schedule.

I know

I know it, it's garbage.

On the other hand, go Ian!! I think if IJ can stay healthy he'll have another awesome season. He sure seems motivated and hungry.

And the beat goes on..........

Drums keep pounding rhythms to the brain. When will it end? Did I hear someone whisper, "AG"? Could that mean "after gene"? A rut is a rut. Being the big fish in the little pond is an old concept. Some are afraid to be the average fish in the big pond. Hmmm...maybe that average fish would grow into the bigun that got away!!
So. Go Ian. GO BRONCOS. And GO BSU. Not to many years ago we were a little podunk almost spot on the football map. Now even good ole Oklahoma knows where we are!!!!
Thanks Hawk. Thanks Pete. And all the rest. But most of all thanks to all the players and athletic supporters....pun there ;-)
GO BRONCOS
