Five biggest questions for Boise State football

The college football season begins Thursday night with several televised games (Oregon State vs. Stanford; South Carolina vs. N.C. State) and really gets underway Saturday with a full slate of games, including Boise State hosting Idaho State at Bronco Stadium and Idaho visiting Arizona.

Here are the five biggest questions surrounding the Broncos:

1. Is the offensive line good enough?

Even Boise State coach Chris Petersen is pointing to the line, which features just one returning starter (Andrew Woodruff), as a key to the season. If the offensive line can be average or slightly better, the Broncos' offense should be explosive. They have so many playmakers at running back and wide receiver not to be.

But with inexperienced players at four of the five spots along the offensive line — including freshman center Thomas Byrd and sophomores Kevin Sapien and Matt Slater at the tackles — there is reason for worry.

Woodruff, however, said the line really came together during fall camp and he is not worried.

"We've found our identity as a unit," Woodruff said. "... What really matters is the confidence the coaches have in us and the confidence we have in each other. That's the most important thing."

2. Is Kellen Moore as good as advertised?

The freshman quarterback has the fate of Bronco Nation in his hands. And it seems like everyone — coaches, teammates, fans — expect him to perform at a very high level from the opener on.

I've got to think there will be some growing pains, even for the uncommonly knowledgeable quarterback.

3. Are the Broncos too young?

Boise State lists 33 freshmen and sophomores on its two-deep roster, including starters at quarterback, center, both offensive tackles, defensive end, strongside linebacker, both safeties and cornerback.

"In a way we feel young because you know that they're freshman. At the same time though all these guys are so advanced out here that it really doesn't feel like it," said sophomore D.J. Harper.

As safety Jason Robinson said, these things go in cycles — a few years ago the Broncos were a veteran unit and in a few years they will be again.

4. Are the linebackers ready?

A week before the season opener, Boise State flipped its starting linebackers around, elevating Aaron Tevis, moving Kyle Gingg and Tim Brady to different spots and demoting Derrell Acrey to second team.

The linebackers were one of the biggest disappointments for the Broncos last season. The Broncos have much more depth at the position this year, but will they be much better. It's the biggest worry about the defense.

5. How will life be without Marty?

Safety Marty Tadman always seemed to make the biggest plays at the biggest spots. His intelligence on the field is irreplaceable. I have a feeling he covered up a lot of mistakes by the other 11 players.

Now the Broncos have Robinson and Jeron Johnson at the safety spots. Both are more physical than Tadman, but will they develop his knack for making the big play? That's an almost impossible standard.

• A note for all of you Meridian High football fans. Idaho State coach John Zamberlin is very impressed with former Meridian quarterback A.J. Storms, who is playing safety for the Bengals. Storms is expected to redshirt this season.

"He was a steal for us. It was big mistake for the people that missed on him," Zamberlin said.

Said Idaho State linebacker Ryan Phipps, a transfer from Oregon: "He's a stud. ... He's a lot better than anybody would expect."

Boise State coach Chris Petersen said he was surprised that Storms did not go somewhere as a quarterback.

"I thought the guy was a good spread option quarterback. And that's what I thought he was going to do. That guy was so productive out
there in that offense they run. I thought that was the best fit," Petersen said.

• Links from the WAC:

— Hawaii will make a game-time decision on its starting quarterback. The Swamp is not a good place to break in a new QB.

— The Fresno Bee's WAC preview. Shocking, they pick the Bulldogs.

— Utah State eager to earn victories. Well, no duh.

— This is a pretty good story about San Jose State defensive end Jeff Schweiger, whose story is a bit like Marty Tadman's. Lost his way and then found it through faith. Interesting reason why he wears No. 17.

— Louisiana Tech to visit LSU next season. Well, Derek Dooley did say he wanted to play some regional opponents.

If he was so good

then why didn't we offer him Pete? I mean, MR. Coach Pete, sir. Hopefully we didn't miss out on a great prospect especially a local one. I am very excited to see how this young team performs, and nervous.

I Know Why Pete Didn't Offer Him

Because he wasn't good enough. It's really that simple.

How many on a side?

Murph - you said that you thought that Tadman covered up a lot of mistakes for the other 11 players. (Now watch them fix the article and make you wonder why I wrote this.)

If Tadman was playing with 11 other teammates, scoring should have been pretty low with the Bronco defensive 12 playing the other team's offensive 11.

Moore will learn and

Moore will learn and improve and someday be one of the best quarterbacks in the country. However, he is not your typical redshirt freshman quarterback. So against teams like Idaho State he should shine. Now when Boise State plays Bowling Green, Moore will likely not look quite as good. When they play Oregon, you will likely start to hear talk about letting Hamdan play. Then when Boise State gets back to conference play, Moore will shine again.

The Offense line may be okay but they will find out what they are made of when they play Oregon. Oregon has one of the best defenses in the country and they will pressure the hell out of Boise State and the high powered offense. Moore and the coaching staff can take advantage of this with a combination short passing game and occasionally long passing game at the right time. They probably won't be able to run the ball much. Less than 100 yrds. Playing at Oregon with one of the loudest crowds and stadiums in the country will also not help. Georga with their powerful defense made Hawaii look like they didn't belong in the bowl game last year. So Boise State may be out of their leaque when they play Oregon. However, this is a great test and metric for preparing for conference play and anticipating a bowl game.

Insight

I always love reading a post that is well written. Well stated although BSU's running attack is going to be incredible this year because the returning RB's. Yes, the O line is very questionable and Moore is a new QB but he does have a quick release and many good players backing him if he can just get the ball to them. How do you think Oregon would have performed against Georgia last year? I think they would've got stomped also. We aren't Hawaii, they were all pass last year, shut that down and they were dead in the water, something BSU had trouble with last year because the D-line wasn't performing well. It will be a good test for BSU and Oregon may get surprised.

6. When's the game? (every week's No. 1)

georgejohnson's got it

most posts are just so much hooey but georgejohnson has summed up the situation quite succintly.

Maybe

You could be right, and also you could be completely wrong. This kid could come in, not bat an eye with the talent around him and set records. Only time will tell. I'm just excited about the possibilities. People need to be very wary to give Oregon so much credit. I grew up around Eugene and yes, they produce a good, solid team every year, but there always seems to be a hold up for greatness. They have lost to OSU two times in a row, once away and once at home. One of those years, a boise state team beat OSU 42-14. They beat USC last year, but so did Stanford. I was sweating a little with Costa at qb, but he's gone. He was the key to their spread that Dixon used to make them one of the best if not the best team in the country last year when he went out. And as murphy states, the injury bug hurts them again this year.

Whats nice about our schedule this year I believe is that after ISU, we get a bye, which will help out tremendously to refocus before Bowling Green, a great warm-up to Oregon. I don't think you could have drawn that up any better. Go broncos.

warm up

nice to have to only get up for one game a season

warm up???

Ummm......S. Mississippi will be a tough road game as well, along with Nevada on the road, and then possibly the WAC championship against Fresno State here at home.

I think it's a lot MORE than just ONE game to "get up" for in a year.... what else you got, schofield???

what else

No matter how you spin still adds up to one of the easiest schedules in the nation. The AD should do better, but he won`t look at next years.

I don't think I gave Oregon

I don't think I gave Oregon too much credit. Boise State could even beat them if Oregon's offense doesn't jell. What I said was Oregon is expected to have one of the best defenses in the country this year. They have most of their defensive players back. Boise State with a good game plan could do some damage. It mainly in my opinion will need to be a smart short passing game mixed with some long passes at the right time. I don't think Boise State will be able to run very well against a very good run defense. Oregon will play into Boise States hands if they try to blitz too much thinking they can rattle the freshman quarterback. I think Moore is too poised with a quick release for that and he was very seldom sacked in high school even though he rolled out a lot and moved around in the pocket.

Question No. 6

Idaho State? Will BSU schedule a COLLEGE football team this year? When you're out of the top 25 and you're a 44-point favorite, you are going against the biggest patsy of D-1 opening day. Want respect? Play some decent teams.

Can I have my Grizz

back and put them the WAC? Sorry VANDALS. Growing up in Missoula I whatched them grow. They are A good team. The School was pretty small then.

Yes, Lucille your Grizz would be nice there.

On that I wholly agree.
