Dale Watson at the Grizzly Rose

With so many quality concerts this summer, a few are slipping through the promotional cracks, which is a shame. So here's a reminder that Dale Watson plays Thursday night at the Grizzly Rose. Tickets are $15 advance (at the Record Exchange) or $18 at the door.

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Watson calls his honky-tonk music "Ameripolitan" rather than country — mostly because the state of today's country music bugs him. Here's Watson singing a tune you won't hear on "Kissin'" or "Wow" anytime soon: "Country My Ass":

Dale kicks butt

Glad to see him come through town again only a year after his Alive After Five performance, especially since he sticks around Austin so much and is arguably more popular in Europe than the U.S. He's for fans of traditional country, although he did do one album drenched in strings that was dedicated to his fiancee who died in a car crash (and he attempted suicide and got put into a mental institution as a result). He's kinda been to hell and back, so his lyrics ring true.

Excellent!

Dale puts on a fantastic live show. Thanks for the heads up!

Sing me a tune

Not sure bout dat.

No fiddle, no hats, and has drums in the back.
At least there's a steel guitar in the mix.

Hats are cool but overrated. Alabama never wore them...

And I don't recall Porter wearing them a lot. Same for A.P. Carter and Roy Acuff. In fact I believe the country swingsters started the hat thing.

Hats are optional.
