Updated: Another Metallica song is out

Listen to "The Day that Never Comes" here.

Uhhhhhhhhh. The last part's not bad.

Other first impressions?

Update: Here's "My Apocalypse."

This one is definitely better, but it does contain Slayerish moments that feel sort of different coming from Metallica. Whatever the case, I think it's safe to say this album will be better than "St. Anger." (Of course, the Jonas Brothers' album is better than "St. Anger.")

Agree

I'm one of those people that gave up on them partially on the Black Album and fully on Load, so the last part had some thrashy flair that I liked them for in the first place. Didn't Rick Rubin produce the album? There's some hope there, but I doubt I'll rediscover their music.

Best band EVER!!!

Sorry but I believe that Metallica will for ever and always be the best band!

metallica

They have gone downhill since they cut their hair...sellouts!

way to jump on the band

way to jump on the band wagon. Please go into detail describing this statement. Ive never understood people who say this, because thats all they say. They cant add to it or anything because they are just regurgitating what another idiot has said.

It's that 'Samson et Delilah" thing...

What the heck happened to these guys

It was just pathetic to see one of the all time greatest thrash bands become nu-metal posers on their last CD. What respect I had for them going into St. Anger was lost the day I picked up the cd. They are in it only for the money now (have been for awhile) and trying anything they can to get back to form. Sad.

st. anger

what was wrong with this album. i though tit may have strayed from there original stuff but if they stayed original then people would rag on them for that.

DEEDS

Why (other than the whole napster thing)do people dislike Metallica and there recent sound?

They cannot dig that people change and grow and grow older...

They had the same teenaged angst in middle aged bodies that they felt because Bon Jovi, The Who, Def Leppard etc wouldn't stay true to 1975 or 1987. These people will always be around and while we love them we don't rely on them to be fans of anybody. Perhaps they will become resigned to the loss of their own youth and relight the fire they have left to rejoin our search for musical enlightenment.

Agreed. People don't like change.

It's as simple as that. It reminds them that their own lives are changing, too -- maybe not in ways they like.

Also, the last few Metallica albums have been pretty awful.

Dude.

Duds : )

Chicago doesn't fall in that category. Maybe they are still having fun.

Hope

Hoping they do make it to town on this tour. Saw them 3 times within 18 months in Seattle after the Black album came out including the Kingdome show with GNR.

They put on a heck of a great show!

Metallica

I'll be surprised if they don't play here within the next 18 months.

Wouldn't mind seeing them live again...

...but not forking over $75. I'll pick up a couple of 22oz Double Dead Guys and watch Binge & Purge again and still be over $50 ahead thank you very much...

lars and the gold plated shark tank

metallica sux, always have sucked. especially since the black album, i know everyone says that but its true but thats my opinion. and charging $75 for tickets to see them what the hell? sure fans say they play forever, but for that price come on. there is much better music out there. keep your eyes and ears open for there is more to music then what mtv or the radio tells you. oh and that metallica movie, why would they make that. just shows how big of cry babies they are. dig the cry scene with lars, hetfeld and dave mustaine at group therapy. bring the hate now

If that's the exact mix on My Space, it's poorly structured vs.

One. Has some flashes of the old brilliance but they don't care to stretch any. Duran Duran, oddly enough has been one of the few bands I've ever seen that could really stretch and find themselves anywhere they wanted to.

INXS with Michael Hutchence was the other that pops into focus in my memory.

Did you just...

...compare Metallica to Duran Duran? LOL

I'm just kidding, I know what you're saying, but it just seemed kind of funny.

Personally...I wasn't too thrilled with the new single. Parts of it were kind of cool I guess, but in my opinion, anytime a band tries to "recreate" something they did 20 years ago...it's going to be an utter failure. I never fully understood the backlash when Metallica tried to evolve and move into different musical directions. I was really fond of some of the stuff they were trying to do on Load...of course after that they just kind of lost their direction amidst silly fights against Napster and such. I am one of the few people that will actually defend St. Anger, though. Don't get me wrong, it really is a terrible album, but the worst part is...some of the songs are actually pretty good. I don't know who was controlling the recording (maybe that crazy shrink from the documentary?) but the arrangements were pretty terrible and the sound...dear god Lars, did you not listen to the drum tracks? The way Bob Rock engineered that album makes it completely unlistenable. I don't believe I've heard the songs live, but I can imagine they HAVE to be better!

Hope the 2nd song is better...maybe I'll have to download it before I decide to purchase the album... ;)

St. anger

Ok some of the lyrics were off but the music rocked! i guess since idaho doesnt have any death metal or hard rock stations people dont really have a taste for the st. anger album. I mean come on the X(100.3) claims to have rock but they can play some crap! But much ya do about nothing!!!

The sound was terrible...

...absolutely horrible...I can make a more pleasant sounds with a few trash cans than Lars did with his drums...I tried to actually defend the songs, but I can't stand by the album...

Meh

The song would be decent if it had the tempo of the end of the song. The power ballad crap beforehand... not so much.

No, it really did flounder looking for the riff for far too long

And they jerked about like a sample of a dying fish. The band was very tired or drawn apart, it's obvious that the fluidity isn't there, even for an experimental break. Was it Rubin's fault, the band's all of the above and more? This is like a gymnast afraid to fail on TV. I've felt that fright.

Every band feels the fright at the beginning and at least once afterward. Recovery and rebuilding is the key and that too is scary.

PS It isn't their fault if they like acoustic. They are men.

WOW

What sell outs! if they always sounded the same then im sure you would complain about that. just like a DENVER BRONCO fan you have to take the "reinventing years" with the good. I know there stuff will forever be the best. Oh and yes Lars is the FOSHIZZEL of drummers!

You've never seen and heard Neil Peart give technical lessons.

Dry as whatever but man he's cerebral and fun to watch!

Just because his mind is not for rent...

don't put him down as arrogant. He just knows changes aren't permanent, but that old devil, change, is.

What a Rush that was!

and justice for all was their last good album

and Bob Rock's middle name is "doesn't".

man, we have alot of critics

man, we have alot of critics on this board. I doubt most of you have never even picked up a guitar or touched a drum set let alone sell over a 100 million albums and win 7 grammy's. They are one of the best bands of all time for a reason. They can charge $75/ticket because people will pay that to see them. You get your moneys worth anyways.

I appreciate every album they have, even St. Anger. It was meant to sound like a modern garage/thrash album. Their new song has grown on me. Most singles arent the best songs on the album anyways. so if thats the case, this album will be platinum 2 weeks after its release.

Grammys? American Idol winners

get grammys! Totally not a good way to judge the worth of a artist or their music. Grammys are bought and sold by the labels...or have you been sleeping the past 10 years?

Ive never heard of any

Ive never heard of any american idol or any pop singer getting a grammy for best metal performance or best hard rock performance. I will agree with you that the grammy's are somewhat rigged, but that doesnt negate the fact that they have them.

Best Metal Performance?

No, the American Idle (not mis-spelled thank you) kids won for 'Best Plastic Performance'. And (rusty) Metallica is up for that award this year. Congrats to the bland! (also not mis-spelled thanks)

And the Grammys being rigged DOES in fact negate

anyone winning one...or buying one, as the case may be. (and is)

I have to laugh at and WITH you as well...

If God and fitty cent were up in the spoken word category at the Grammys...

God could at least party all night...

you could argue the same

you could argue the same point about any event in the olympics that is judged, but it doesnt take away that theyt have the medal or what they did to get there.

The Olympics suck and are supremely dead.

It's too bad for the athletes but true.
