Idaho comments cause a stink in Georgia

A comment made about Idaho by Gwinnett County, Georgia, Schools Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks has some parents calling for his ouster.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you'll recall the comment linked to last Friday in which Wilbanks said, "Do they have any blacks in Idaho? They don't have many."

Black and white Georgia parents were offended by the statement made by the nation's longest-serving superintendent.

While the NAACP and parents get on Wilbanks case and colleagues jump to his defense, the Idaho Newsreader wonders — what about an apology to Idahoans, Alvin?

Idaho Falls Airport to get an upgrade

All of the passenger airlines at the Idaho Falls Airport except Horizon will stop service from September 2nd to the end of the month because the airport will be shutting down the main runway to rebuild it.

According to LocalNews8, the eastern Idaho ABC affiliate, that will leave the airport with only a shorter runway for flights, and most of the airliners are too big to land on it.

It will cost nine million dollars to replace and re-surface 9,000 feet of runway. The federal government will pay 95 percent of the cost.

The hot debate in Bonner County: a work-release center

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports that the need for a work-release center in the county "continues to be hotly debated in the court of law and public opinion."

"Nationally, there is a downturn in using these types of work-release facilities because they're so expensive to run," Daryl Wheeler, Bonner County's Republican nominee for sheriff, said last week.

The story says rising housing costs and tightening budgets are causing governments to embrace reduced jail use as a sentencing option.

Falls' Mayor to call on local businesses to go green

The Post-Register reports that Idaho Falls' mayor today will call on local businesses to follow City Hall's lead and conserve energy.

Mayor Jared Fuhriman is expected to unveil lighting improvements made at the 78-year-old City Hall building.

Those improvements — installation of fluorescent bulbs and motion sensors, among others — will result in 62,774 kilowatt-hour savings per year.

The city will recoup the project's $13,189.56 total cost, covered by Bonneville Power Administration rebates and credits, in two years.

Remembering Ruby Ridge

On this day in Idaho history in 1992, fugitive neo-Nazi leader Randall Weaver opened fire on U.S. marshals from inside his Idaho mountaintop home in Ruby Ridge.

His wife and teenage son and a deputy marshal died during the 11-day standoff.

See more on this day in history here.

1. There is no human life in Idaho...

It is a mirror site on god's server. You were dreaming but it is over. Go to your residence and await our commands and THEN we will restore control...

FO

You weren't one of those caught in the speed trap in Ontario yesterday, were you? Ontario police were having a reallllly good time. It was a kick to watch.

You don't pay any attention, do y'all?

I not only sold my car in 2006, my mom picked me up and took me to my sister's and she and her husband took me to the Fair to see Chicago. I also picked up a tube I needed for an old Zenith AM-FM clock radio to restore the FM.

Then I watched Xanadu again on my Laserdisc player and hit the hay.

I waited 24 years to see Chicago again...this trap wasn't anywhere near I-84 I gather as I didn't see any hot and heavy cop action and my mother does not tend to get any tickets.

PS It wasn't related to some of the area school zone patrols going on in a few towns to alert you to school starting next week, was it?

DUH

That's one of the reasons I moved here.

Fewer black people equates to a lower crime rate. Sad but true.

Compared to L.A. NYC and Chicago where I have lived, the Treasure Valley is basically crime free, except for idiotic drug addicts.

TheKing

if your comment is true (which its not) then why are all the people sitting in ACJ all white. shouldnt this be a crime free state since its so white washed. go back to the big city. that goes for you too foreign oregonian you guys have some serious loose screws!!!

We had a chase, a really strange sex sting and a Nigerian scam

agent in two daze time and I didn't even go anywhere in that time.

I went to school with that former teacher and none of us here understand this as it came out of the blue...the guy did not act that way as far as we ever knew for 30 years, and we're all in a state of shock, pain, resignation and hope that he and his family will recover. Quite frankly, I hadn't even talked to him in a few weeks and I woke up exactly in time to catch the 5 pm channel 7 newscast LIVE and I thought I was still in a dream for a bit until the 24/7 repeat.

Use a little common sense or courtesy please. This town is normally boring as crap and it has mostly returned to it's blessed state of manure without much prodding.

PS THE COUNTY SEAT AND JAIL ARE STILL IN VALE, SINCE THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

Most of them are in jail

because they are stupid. Ask anyone who has done time and I know a few folks that have. They all say jail is full of idiots.

Oh yeah, one more thing...

Go to the Ada County Jail website and look up the inmate listings. They all have their photos posted. They are not all white, that's for sure.

More Elk in Idaho than democrats

So sez Slick Willie, our sexy ex-prexy.

1/16th of an inch short

Thass what the police informant had Randy Weaver cut the shot gun short.

Thass why several people met violent deaths or injuries.

Thass the over-reaction to the horrible crime of sawing a metal pipe short.

Thass what millions of dollars were spent on--1/16th of an inch shortage.

Thass an outrageous BFD over a 1/16th of an inch.

1/16th of an inch indeed...

Thass what the difference is between murder and assault with a finger on the trigger.

Thass what happens every day in this country.

Thass not over-reacting iffin' you're dead.

Thass what millions of dollars cannot restore.

Thass outrageous to think that we shouldn't stop crime. Period.

Whether it was 1/16 or a foot, it's still illegal. Whether you kill one person or 100, it's still illegal. As I've said before, in a famous line from Jim Carrey: "Stop breaking the law, a__hole!"

Far as I know, a short barrel doesn't kill you...

unless they hit you over top enough times with it.
