Little Camas, down for the count, again

This reservoir can't buy a break. We get a great winter that fills most reservoirs, but Little Camas still gets drained.

This just came from Idaho Department of Fish and Game:

"Little Camas Reservoir in Elmore County will be dry or nearly dry by late summer. Fish in the reservoir will have a high likelihood of dieing as water levels drop. For these reasons, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game opened the reservoir to salvage of fish."

“We would rather have people harvest these fish than let them go to waste when the reservoir is dewatered,” said Doug Megargle, Regional Fisheries Manager.

"Daily bag, possession, and size limits will be removed on Little Camas Reservoir beginning Aug. 20 and ending Nov. 30."

There must be some seriously thirsty irrigators draining this reservoir. It's too bad because it used to have a reputation for quickly growing large trout. In recent years, F&G has stocked it in the spring and hoped it would hold enough water for fish to survive throughout the summer and grow to trophy size the following year. But it doesn't seem to matter what kind of winter or summer we have, Little Camas gets drained.

We had good snowfall, a cool spring, and a relatively mild summer. If Little Camas could hold water any year, you would think this would be the one, but no luck.

Maybe we better just plant the RIP gravestone on this reservoir and look elsewhere for our trout fishing.

Camas

I have a lot of memories growing up of catching some monster rainbows and camping at Little Camas. I would go there and take my little buds if it wasn't so inconsistent and held water. Sad!

AHA! (little enviro-boy with hand drill quickly sneaks off)
