Offense scores seven TDs, QBs look good

The Boise State offense bounced back Saturday with a terrific performance, scoring seven touchdowns in the Broncos’ final public scrimmage this year.

Senior quarterback Bush Hamdan tossed three touchdown passes while redshirt freshman Kellen Moore, sophomore Mike Coughlin and freshman Drew Hawkins each threw one. Junior Nick Lomax ran for a score.

The offense had been shaky in the first scrimmage and struggled this week in practice.

“I saw a lot of guys today just do the little details to make a play successful,” offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said. “… They’re kind of putting it together.”

The quarterback race still seems tight, with Hamdan and Moore the clear favorites. They have taken all the first-team snaps in scrimmages.

Hamdan opened the scrimmage with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Vinny Perretta. He was 9-of-14 for 214 yards and three TDs with one interception, earning a team-best efficiency rating of 249.10.

Moore answered with a 70-yard touchdown drive of his own right after Hamdan’s opening TD pass. He was 13-of-21 for 159 yards with a TD and a pick. For a 131.68 rating.

“I don’t think it helped out (with the decision) that Kellen and I probably had the exact same numbers today,” Hamdan said.

Coughlin also was sharp, going 7-of-11 for 108 yards with a TD and an interception, and Lomax was 11-of-19, leading a 17-play touchdown drive.

Even Hawkins, the walk-on, was 8-of-9 for 75 yards and a touchdown — all on the last drive of the night. He marched the third team 70 yards in 14 plays, converting third-and-12, fourth-and-13 and fourth-and-2.

Sophomore Jeremy Avery led the tailbacks with six carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. Senior Ian Johnson did not dress — coaches chose to rest him — and sophomore D.J. Harper barely played.

Junior Jeremy Childs paced the receivers with five catches for 114 yards and a 49-yard touchdown.

Perretta added three catches for 84 yards and a TD and Austin Pettis had a 68-yard TD.

The defense struggled in part because of several key players who did not participate or were limited. Coach Chris Petersen said none of the injuries are serious. Safety Jeron Johnson and cornerback Kyle Wilson, both starters, were among those who didn’t play.
