Broncos sluggish in first scrimmage

The Boise State football team was a little sluggish Monday afternoon at Bronco Stadium in the first scrimmage of the fall.

The offense put together just two touchdown drives — a 70-yard drive featuring a 51-yard hookup between freshman quarterback Kellen Moore and senior wideout Vinny Perretta, who turned a short pass into a touchdown, and a 25-yard drive capped by a 1-yard run by Ian Johnson.

Meanwhile, the defense only recorded one turnover, when sophomore linebacker Derrell Acrey blitzed untouched up the middle and stripped Moore.

Senior Bush Hamdan and Moore took all of the snaps with the first-team offense, starting with Hamdan. Neither made a big mistake, but neither made many plays, either. They were hobbled by dropped passes, including a throw from Hamdan to Austin Pettis that likely would have been a touchdown, and protection breakdowns.

Neither quarterback was pleased with the performance.

“We’ve just got to bounce back and make some bigger plays when those chances are there,” Moore said. “… We’ve just got to execute our offense better.”

Coach Chris Petersen was not happy with the energy level and enthusiasm of his players. They ran gassers after the scrimmage, cheering and hollering in a show of enthusiasm.

“You know you’re going to have quite a few errors early in the first scrimmage,” Petersen said, “but when you’re young it’s hard to get excited and encourage your teammates when all you’re trying to do is take care of yourself. That’s on me. That’s something we haven’t had to coach in the past. So we’ll learn from that, too. We’re going to coach everything. We’re going to coach energy, excitement and enthusiasm.”

Moore was 9-of-22 for 137 yards and a touchdown. Hamdan was 5-of-15 for 48 yards. Junior Nick Lomax had the best day, with the third-teamers, going 7-of-9 for 68 yards.

Senior Ian Johnson led the team with 10 carries for 50 yards. Sophomore D.J. Harper added seven carries for 42 yards.

True freshmen Chris Potter (five catches, 20 yards) and Chandler Koch (three catches, 61 yards) had big receiving days.

NOT GOOD

last year there was no leadership, there didnt seem to be the team closeness there was in the past. This year you hear the supposed to be leaders saying how fired up they were and how mad they are and how intense the player run pracitces were yet they get cant get geeked up for fall scrimmage. Could be a long year, maybe not but this sure is disheartening for a fan to hear.

Not Great

This BSU team could have a great record without being a great team...but that's a commentary on the weak WAC and overall schedule. Then again, this BSU team might end up with mediocre record. An inexperienced QB and offensive line changes everything, and I'm not sold on the defense either...

Agreed

I agree with you 100% on the leadership role Tooth. Thats what the team lacked the most last year.
I think they'll snap into it. At least I hope. I think if Coach Pete will have anything to do about it the team will be snapped back by Saturday's scrimmage. Also if Hamden is such a leader as he say's he is then its time to become that leader. Thats one of the QB's many jobs is a Team Leader...

What?!!!

BANDWAGONERS!! That's what happens when you have a communter school where 90% of the fans didn't even attend the said "learning" institution. What happened to unconditional support for the "broncs" from all those nimrods proudly wearing their blue and orange clown costumes?

Attend BSU

What is wrong with fans supporting BSU that did not attend the collage? Myself I went to ISU, but have lived in Boise for almost 30 years. I am a BSU football fan and just because I did not go to BSU does not mean I will turn tail and run if they have a bad year. I think this is true with most BSU fans.

Not sure if you are a fan of NFL or not. But do you think you can not be a fan of a NFL team unless sometime in your life you lived in your team’s town.

You must be a Vandals fan where you have a hard time even getting your alumni to support your team.

And yes I still support ISU. In fact I used to support the Vandals, but some of their a-hole fans are making it real hard to support them. (I feel you should support all Idaho teams).

Just because fans are discussing some of the problems our team may have sure does not mean they are no longer fans.

Thanks! First jingoist card carrying whatever bagged this year!

Find a political talk show to call please? Next time God calls and asks you to don chain mail say no? Knock folks for the same thing you hate.

Lots of closet fans for BSU.

Lots of closet fans for BSU. They want to wait and see how they do before they throw on their orange and blue. Vandals are going to light you guys up this year!!!

I guess you Vandals don't

I guess you Vandals don't have your own headlines so you need to try and slam ours. Talking about closet fans. What happened to the Vandals when they thought they owned Bronco stadium for rivalry game? Hardly a Vandal in sight these days. Might want to stay in the closet for another year. I believe the Vandals were ranked as the worst team in the county? Not good for strength of schedule.

Scared of the mighty Vandals

Yep. BSU fans are always scared of the real threat from up north. Every year I look at the BSU schedule and mark that as the possible loss!!! Of course, every year proves me wrong, but hey, maybe this year. And maybe this year will finally be the year TCU finally busts the BCS. Yep, I see it all happening.

Closet BSU fans?

speaking of people being in the closet...... didn't Larry Craig Graduate from UofI?
