Broncos not pleased with energy at first scrimmage
Submitted by Brian Murphy on Mon, 08/11/2008 - 6:53pm.
Scrimmages, especially first ones, always have the aura of being important. Then, you realize that the entire thing is a work in progress — lots of mixing-and-matching with personnel groups, lots of special teams work, lots of situational work.
Boise State's first scrimmage of the fall was no different. The coaches aren't lying when they say they need to look at the film before issuing any sweeping declarations. It really is tough to tell who is playing well and who isn't.
What was clear was that the Broncos didn't have enough energy and the offense was a bit sluggish.
Those are the clearest first impressions from the scrimmage.
The fans who stuck around to the end of Boise State's first fall scrimmage got to see the punishment for playing without enthusiasm — running.
Coach Chris Petersen was not happy with the Broncos' energy level during the scrimmage at Bronco Stadium on Monday afternoon and so he had his players running 50-yard sprints after the event.
"We didn't come out with a lot of energy," quarterback Bush Hamdan said.
Was it because of tough two-a-day practices and the draining effect of training camp?
"It can't be because the season is going to be a lot tougher," Hamdan said. "We've got to come out here with a lot more energy and a lot more excitement."
Petersen attributed it — in part — to his team's youth.
"When you’re young it’s hard to get excited and encourage your teammates when all you're trying to do is taking care of yourself," Petersen said.
"That’s on me," he said. "That’s something that we haven’t had to coach in the past. We’ll learn from that, too. We’re going to coach everything. We’re going to coach energy and excitement and enthusiasm."
It was tough to show too much excitement about the Broncos' offense, which moved the ball in fits and starts, but lacked the explosiveness for which the Broncos are known.
Quarterback Kellen Moore had a 51-yard touchdown pass to Vinny Perretta. Perretta did most of the work, taking a 10-yard route and outracing the defense.
"We've just got to execute our offense better. It sounds pretty simple, but we’ve just got to get more completions and move the ball down the field, just be a little more smooth about everything," Moore said.
QB DERBY: Moore completed 9-of-22 passes for 137yards and one touchdown. Hamdan completed 5-of-15 passes for 48 yards.
Nick Lomax completed 7-of-9 passes for 68 yards. Michael Coughlin completed 5-of-8 passes for 35 yards. Freshman Drew Hawkins completed 5-of-9 passes for 49 yards.
Hamdan started with the first-team offense. Moore was the only other quarterback to play behind the first-team line.
"We’ll see if anybody else deserves to get more reps with the ones as this week goes on," Petersen said.

Man Crush
Brian's Man Crush for Hamdan is disgusting. Almost stalkerish.
Professional writer?
when all your trying to do is taking care of yourself," Petersen said.
It was tough to show to much excitement about the Broncos' offense....
Did you by chance mean "all you're trying to do" and "too much excitement..."
Jeez, Murph, try a third-grade English course.
Why? They speak ESPANOL.
Esto es BILINGUAL el mismo, Si?
