New brewpub to open in McCall this fall

Here’s some good news for Valley County craft beer enthusiasts and thirsty recreationists from the Treasure Valley — a new brewpub will be open for business in McCall later this fall.

The Salmon River Brewery will open in a retrofitted home at 300 Colorado Street later this fall. Co-owners Matt and Jennifer Hurlbutt and Matt and Ellen Ganz are currenlty turning a home built in 1976 into a seven-barrel brewery and pub.

Matt Hurlbutt, who is doing much of the retrofitting work, said he is using as much salvaged lumber and other restored materials as he can during construction to reflect the owners’ dedication to environmental conservation.

The owners also say they are committed to using as many local products as possible.

I’ll try to track down the owners and find out about their brewing philosophy and what kind of beers Idaho imbibers can expect to be able to drink this fall. The limited information about the brewery on their Web site indicates there will be a sushi bar at the pub.

This also means residents of McCall will be able to get fresh beer from two different places, as the McCall Brewing Co. (807 N. 3rd St.) continues to turn out tasty craft brews and pub food. That’s not bad for a town with a permanent population of about 2,500 people.

It’s easy to work up a healthy thirst when recreating around McCall, so the more fresh beer, the better.

Better late than never? (=

Happy New Year Patrick to you and your readers!
Salmon River Brewery is still here. We were unable to hit our "Fall" opening goal due to the myriad delays that generally accompany construction projects. Especially considering that everything we do not need to be licensed to complete has been done "in house".

None the less the brew house is complete. The Idaho State Police/Alcohol Beverage Control has inspected our facilities and given verbal confirmation that we are approved as wholesale brewers in the State of Idaho! We need the Health Department to tip their hats to our brewery and it will be official on the State level. We have a call in for health inspection and hope to receive our approval early next week.
We are a bit tied up with the Federal Government and the Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau and our Brewer's notice approval. Approval is expected very soon. Clerical errors and the Federal Government just don't mix!

Matt Hurlbutt and Matt Ganz have been "apprenticing" with the brew team at Sockeye as often as possible for the last year and have learned a tremendous amount of commercial brewing techniques and concepts in that time. Sockeye RULES! And so does their Ale! Coupled with an array of commercial brewing technique textbooks we have been studying for the past year and years of home brewing we are confident that our Ales will please.

It looks very likely that Salmon River Brewery will have our beer flowing at McCall's winter carnival beer garden at the end of January. A special "Carnival Amber Ale" and our "Salmon River Quiver IPA" are expected to be ready for the two week carnival here in McCall.

If "the stars line up" we may be opening the pub for the carnival as well. A welcoming and cozy McCall style atmosphere will set the stage for our in house ale's to be enjoyed with juicy Zenner's bratwurst and German sausage's and melt in your mouth ribs. Cold cut and cheese plates are slated for a spot on the menu as are other simple yet delicious offerings. Wine enthusiasts wont be let down either as we will offer a variety of fine wines from around the region and world.

One last treat may be available for guests as well. The Sushi Bar, operated by Boise sushi chef's Jenn Poncia and Jordan Ragsdale, is very close to obtaining the needed funds to open a traditional sushi bar inside the pub. Sushi fans cross your fingers!
