An advocate for hire

It became abundantly clear this week — if it hadn't been evident already — that Brandi Swindell is an activist for hire.

And you know what? That's fine by me. As long as everyone knows the rules and can judge her actions accordingly.

Unless you've been hiking in the Sawtooths — or recharging at some other quiet spot far from the IdahoStatesman.com comment pages — you already know Swindell was detained twice by Chinese authorities at Tiananmen Square. The Boisean was among a group of demonstrators protesting religious persecution and human rights violations in China.

As we reported Thursday, the National Clergy Council paid Swindell's way.

Swindell has a unique ability to polarize, and this latest installment in her story doesn't disappoint. And folks on both camps see exactly what they sought to see.

Her supporters see a committed champion with the guts to speak out against an oppressive Chinese regime. I'm not unsympathetic to that viewpoint. Given China's human rights record, I wasn't thrilled seven years ago when Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics. I shed no tears, as the Olympics prepare to open, as a handful of activists call attention to that same human-rights record.

The timing of the protests dovetails into one of the critics' big points.

They see Swindell as a publicity-hungry opportunist who has once again found a way to manipulate media attention. As a a journalist, I like to think I have a pretty good instinct for media hounds — and Swindell's penchant for working the media approaches her knack for dividing popular opinion.

The cynical view is that Swindell went to Beijing to protest the shortage of TV cameras in Boise. Cynical, yes, but also naive.

Yes, this protest was orchestrated for a time when the eyes of the world were turning to Beijing, and reporters, on the eve of the Games, were looking for a story. This was calculated for maximum effect, maximum exposure. As my 13-year-old would say, "Duh."

Folks, this is how the process of public activism is played. Timing matters almost as much as message — the pros pay attention to both. Am I supposed to be surprised?

The critics also juxtaposed Swindell's trip to China against her very public complaints over having to pay the city of Boise for legal fees stemming from the Ten Commandments Monument dispute.

On this point Swindell loses credibility. Remember back in June, when Swindell criticized City Hall for seeking to wring some $10,000 from a single woman running a non-profit organization? This was a silly point at the time; now it's absolutely laughable. It proves once again that City Hall was right to stick to its guns and insist upon collecting legal fees, rather than caving to Swindell's complaints and sticking taxpayers with the bill.

Instead, what happened was perfectly fair under the rules of activism in a free-market economy. Swindell and fellow activist Bryan Fischer raised the money to cover their legal fees — just like Swindell went to China on another group's nickel to protest. I have no problem with either. Just be upfront about it. Spare us the single woman shtick.

This is a business relationship between Swindell and people who donate to her causes. If the donors feel like they're getting their money's worth, fine. It's not my money, not my place to gripe.

And it's surely not my place to begrudge anyone who pays to someone to speak up for their causes. It's no different than an environmental group — supported by memberships and donations — that hires staff to stage press conferences or write guest opinions supporting wilderness or dam breaching.

Taking the argument a step further, an editorial page editor is a paid advocate. I write editorials and opinions to advance the Statesman's editorial positions — a form of advocacy. I also fight and lobby for open government. All the while, I am an employee of a publicly traded newspaper company, working for a paper supported by local and national advertisers and by subscribers.

I can't pretend I have a problem with paid advocacy — as long as it's transparent.

I wish the staged events of the past couple days had caused more of a discussion of China's human rights record. I'm guilty here as well, having dispatched this topic in a quick paragraph. Much of the discussion has instead been about Brandi Swindell, consistent with her ability to make herself controversial.

So we now are reminded that Swindell is not just a local activist, but one who works on behalf of a broader network of advocates. I find this neither shocking nor troubling.

Its a thoughtful piece

Kevin. I too, am struggling with her advocacy against a repressive regime. Certainly I have no desire to defend the lack of civil liberties for the 1.3 billion people in China. But I don't see where her engaging in civil disobedience in a foriegn country would carry any weight with the regime there. And being a foriegner from one of the mightiest countries on the planet might give her a safety net that wouldn't be available to people truly committed to the cause, those who have skin in the game, which she doesn't. So she lacks sincerity. She has no audience there, doesn't speak the language, and appeared to be ignored except for the cameras following her around.

Moreover, I find her advocacy for religious freedom hypocritical when she allies with the likes of Bryan Fischer who would establish Christianity as a state religion if given the chance. And she personally advocates for depriving women of certain freedoms in this country. I can't help but see her as disingenuous.

And lastly she's detracting from all the hard work the athletes who worked all their lives to be at the show in Bejing. Its a form of theft, really. I can't see her as altruistic in her motives operating for the freedom loving people of Tibet whom she'd gladly convert if given the chance. And that's what I see, advocacy for her freedom to convert them, not for their freedom to to practice as they choose.

It's Not About The Chinese Government

The Beijing olympics represent to the Chinese what the Berlin Olympics represented to the Nazis in 1936. Brandi Swindell's goal here is to raise awareness around the world about what's going on in China and not let Communist Chinese attempt to whitewash their image.

Secondly, we have Religious Freedom in the US which means that both Buddhist get to practice their faith and attempts can be made to pursuade them to convert. That's religious freedom.

You forgot "stupid."

Toto, I have a feeling we're not in the US anymore...

and China does not have religious freedom. It is Communist. Common sense would tell you to try to fly under the radar while in a Communist country -

Let her protest over there after the Olympics are over, and the athletes and cameras are gone. See what happens then. Go girl, go!

AEIOU Sometimes Brandi

I was walking down past Lincoln Center one day when I spotted this activist having a cappechino...she said her name was Brandi...

PS It's, "Toto, I don't think were in Kansas anymore", isn't it?

Yes it is, ....I don't think we're in Kansas anymore..

...Brandi and guffawing buffoons just got confused. That's such a lovely photo of them at LAX.

Yes

Common sense says you kiss the rear end of dictators and don't stand up to them. The reason there is any freedom in this world is because of people like Brandi Swindell.

Like we are not aware of the abuses?

What Ms. Swindell did was raise her own visibility.

By dropping her "drawers" over and over.

You get too visible and the snipers get their chance, so to speak. This one should have been marinating on a cannibal's spit by now.

I find it somewhat annoying if not so infuriating.

They'd probably have some reason to quietly execute her after the games though. Stupid girl.

Activist For Hire

First of all, Kevin, the phrase activist for hire is loaded. It implies:

1) She's in it for the money

2) She's insincere in what she believes. The phrase implies If NARAL made her a better offer she'd be off helping them. A gun for hire will work for anyone who pays them and that's what you're implying.

While later, you clarify this somewhat by comparing this to environmental activists, as any good journalists know many later graphs aren't read. That's the reason news stories use the inverted pyrmaid where important data ends up at the top and details that are skimmed end up at the bottom. While we'd rather opinion pieces not be read that way, it'd be more honest if your opening graph weren't so loaded.

Oh Adam

She is in it for her agenda. And that's clear. She'd love to be able to sell her religion to 1.3 billion Chinese. Its first and foremost about her preaching, which necessarily includes the freedom for Chinese to choose what to believe and to practice it without fear of government reprisal. But ultimately its about her belief that her's is the only true church.

Sitsay ootmay OYAY?

She's a blithering idiot for hire. Save the dirty work for the Muslims.

LOCK 'ER UP!

She's worse and more dangerous than a blithering idiot. She has people who actually support her horrific behavior.

Brandi, YOU are an embarrassment.

Brandi

You're a bad girl!
What a Jailbird you would be...
Freaking out all of the Red soldiers
In Beijing...

Through the "Looking Glass"

Oh my, you are good. That one got right past me.

And the youngsters....they have no idea.

religious freedom or just HER religion

id' be more inclined to view her at least neutrally if she was truly protesting for religious freedolm, but she is really about promoting christianity. When she promots right to be jewish, mormon, etc then I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. I wish reporters would stop paying attention to her.

Actually, one of the issues

Actually, one of the issues she's protesting in China is the persecution of a NON-Christian faith. Oh I forgot, for a Christian to stand up for the rights of other faiths is somehow hypocrisy because we still believe in that outdated notion of absolute truth. We do have that maxim "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" in our faith, too, and believe it or not, some of us here practice what we preach.

Oh please

She's advocating for her right to proselytize. Her motives are selfish. She'd gladly make her brand of Christianity the state religion in the US to the exclusion of all others.

Maybe we should have discussed human rights in China

before we shipped all manner of production to them?

That's funny

I was thinking that Americans, including Brandi, are the ultimate enablers for the repression there. We've gladly paid them to exploit their own environment so we can get cheap crap at WalMart.

EDZACHERY!!!

You, dear poster, have hit the nail on the head!

Sorry, I don't shop there.

Most of the crap I own is made ABC

Anywhere But China.

Same old story - U.S. businesses don't care

about Chinese human rights. It's about the money U.S. businesses get for all that cheap labor.

U.S. Business???

Who exactly buys that stuff? There is no purpose in blaming business for stocking and selling what we will buy. We call that smart business.

Any time we want business to change its practice we just need to change our purchasing habits.

Have you tried buying something not made in China?

In many instances the only power left to the consumer is only 'buy or not buy'.

I buy a lot of used stuff made in JAPAN and FOOD.

Japan? You traitor! They bombed Pearl Harbor...

Have you know conscience?

Mr. Matsumoto the founder of Pioneer was a devout Christian.

Japan invented Japanese TV to attone for their militaristic failings....

I'll not hold that against him...but where's my Maxell tape?

I thought they invented Godzilla so they could be cinematically flogged twice a night, and with matinees, 4 times on Saturdays.

Godzilla is a symbol of atonement for the bomb and a warning...

All the fun crap was a BONUS!

I keep thinking that SOMEWHERE...

a pack of teenage girls is waiting to beat the tar out of her so they can post it online, BUT I guess nice fantasy if you can get it.

Never freakin' mind.

Brandi should be imprisoned or shot?

So,protestors are in it for themselves? The anti-Vietnam protestors were just trying to avoid the draft(the men)? Jane Fonda was just trying to further her career in leftist hollywood? The environmentalists are obviously in it for something other than the environment because they DO NOT oppose(or mention) immigration ,legal & illegal, when the early environmentalists like Edward Abbey warned the greatest threat to the environment is population growth. And Brandi's China exploits are just to gain her...what? It's obvious, the left's hatred of her is because she defends christianity & opposes abortion. That alone accounts for the seething & spitting from the left. That China is a tyranny and oppresses thought, religous & otherwise is a condition the left could care less about. That is obvious from the pages of blogs on this site.Read them. China is DEFENDED! Ethnocentrism is an object of scorn & ridicule---no matter the VALUES that are being advanced---or WHAT they are advanced against---multiculturalizm run wild.Boisians blog that China should IMPRISON or even kill her ! Wonder what the Dali Lama would think of this???There is hate on the right, but most hate lies elswhere.

Good post

I would add that she was protesting attrocities in Tibet...which I think speaks to larger freedoms than just her own Christianity.

She can't even cause USEFUL DISRUPTION...

Washed up and sent home before the crazy guy stabbed the coaches father in law.

Yeah, USELESS and misfiring like a clapped out ESCORT.

Sayonara, Miss Fit.

what's ya smokin there....
