BSU's Petersen is No. 2; Vandals looking for wide receivers
Submitted by Brian Murphy on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 12:40pm.
One thing we're hoping to do with the blog this year is open it up to some of the other writers around here.
We're negotiating with sports editor and Top 25 voter Mike Prater about bringing some national stuff onto the Turf. Prater, as a first-round pick, is holding out.
But we had no such problems convincing Idaho writer Nick Jezierny to contribute. Jezierny, having been through his rookie hazing, is raring to go.
He just filed this report after speaking with Idaho football coach Robb Akey after the Vandals finished their third practice of fall camp at around noon MDT.
Akey's biggest concern remains the receiving corps as Idaho runs a three-receiver package and has yet to find players who consistently can run the right route, get open and catch the ball.
"That's my challenge to that crew, and I walked into their meeting room the other night and told them, 'I am challenging you all,'" Akey said. "I've had some guys do it at times, but at this point in time, I haven't seen anyone who has made me happy yet."
The leading candidates are junior Max Komar, sophomore Maurice Shaw and sophomore Steven Brown. Akey also said freshmen Marsel Posey and Preston Davis have had their moments.
"That door is open for anyone who wants to go grab it, and obviously we need more than one to go do it," Akey said. "Max did some great things today. Steven Brown made a good catch yesterday, and Marsel Posey made a good deep ball catch over coverage in practice. Preston Davis and Maurice Shaw had some nice catches.
"But I need to be able to say this after every practice and comment on more than just one play. That's what our battle and challenge is right now."
ON THE SHELF: Three players who underwent surgery in the offseason haven't returned to contact drills yet -- guard Mike Iupati (shoulder), cornerback T.J. Taylor (shoulder) and tight end Rick Harrison (back). Iupati and Taylor are participating in conditioning drills, while Harrison isn't practicing.
Senior wide receiver Lee Smith injured his hamstring and will miss several practices to help the rehabilitation. Tight end Jim Reuber and walk-on defensive tackle Alex Toailoa also sustained slight hamstring pulls, Akey said.
WHO'S HERE, WHO'S NOT: Two players from last year's team aren't back this fall because of academics. Safety Cary Jensen-Madison is ineligible, but he will remain with the program. Linebacker Adam Shamion isn't with the program, but Akey said he could return next year if his academic work returns to expected levels.
All of Idaho's 2008 signees have reported to camp with the exception of three -- defensive end Hank Bryant, kicker Trey Farquhar and defensive tackle Larry Dugan.
Bryant is waiting to be cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse and will report once he is cleared to begin practice.
Farquhar and Dugan are grayshirting, meaning they won't join the program until January.
The Vandals return to practice at 10 a.m. MDT Friday.
12:30 p.m. -- Watched the first episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks" last night. HBO is back with the Dallas Cowboys for an inside look at training camp.
First impression: Wow, the Cowboys have a lot of talent — Terrell Owens, Tony Romo, Marion Barber III, Jason Witten, Adam Jones, Roy Williams, Tank Johnson, Felix Jones. If the ’Boys don't go deep in the playoffs, then Wade Phillips probably won't have a job.
Former Boise State cornerback Orlando Scandrick, a fifth-round draft pick after leaving school early, made it into the show. The coaches had some positive things to say about him, one even asking if injured starter Terence Newman knew who Wally Pipp was?
Pipp was out of the lineup one day, Lou Gehrig took his spot and the rest is history.
Scandrick didn't speak on camera.
Later in the show, defensive backs coach Dave Campo was shown giving Scandrick some tips.
As much as BSU fans complained about Scandrick, he'd look pretty good in the Broncos' lineup this year.
• ESPN has unveiled a new network of college football bloggers with one assigned to all the non-BCS conferences and independents. The rest simply have one conference. So Graham Watson has a tough job. But I have to disagree with her ranking of the Top 10 Non-BCS coaches.
Bronco Mendenhall over Chris Petersen? Sure, BYU has won 11 games in back-to-back seasons, but Petersen should still be getting credit from 2006's 13-0 season and Fiesta Bowl title. Until Mendenhall leads BYU into the top 5 (or if the Broncos stumble this season), Petersen has got to be atop that list.
Also, no Charlie Weis? Really? I know Notre Dame hasn't had the success that the Irish are used to, but the guy won several Super Bowls, has brought in great recruiting classes and is considered one of the top offensive minds in football. There's no room for him in the top 10?

Weis?
Are you kidding? You made the point for why Weis shoudnt be on the list better than for why he should. How does a guy with three straight top 5 recruiting classes finish with a losing record? Simple. Not a very good coach. Can you imagine what Mendenhall and Petersen could do with that many blue chipers? I would definitely put Weis on one list......MOST OVERRATED AND LEAST LIKELY TO STEP AWAY FROM A BUFFET TABLE!
Also, I don't think the average fan thinks of Notre Dame as being a Non-BCS school. Graham Watson probably doesnt think of Notre Dame as non BCS either, especially since they are always assured a position in one of the major bowls by winning 8 or more games.
Murph
I know you've lived in Boise now for a few years and you've been drinking the water here, but you need to remember that the world of college football doesn't revolve around the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Let's compare Mendenhall and Peterson:
1. BYU plays in the MWC, a more difficult conference top to bottom over the last 2 years. That Utah team BSU beat in 2006? They went 8-5. Not conference champs. Those Wyoming teams BSU beat the last two years (including that close call in 2006)? Not a winning season either year.
2. Bowl games? In 2006 BSU beath Oklahoma by 1, and BYU beat Oregon by 30. 2007? BYU beat UCLA by 1, BSU lost to East Carolina by 3.
3. Final rankings? 2006: BSU 5, BYU 15. 2007: BSU: unranked, BYU 14th.
4. Strength of Schedule: 2006: BSU played 2 BCS teams (including bowl games), BYU played 3. 2007: BSU played 1 BCS team, BYU played 3.
5. Conference championships the last 2 years: BSU has 1; BYU has 2.
6. Bowl games wussed out of in the last 2 years: BSU 1, BYU 0.
In the end, I think Peterson deserves the #2 spot. You can't live off the Fiesta Bowl forever, and last year's season, especially the final 2 games, showed one team was stronger than the other.
pretty good assesment
I think your right. However, I believe you are wrong on point 1. The MWC used to be better top to bottom. The last couple of years the WAC has been stronger on the top 3 teams and weaker on the bottom three teams. So to say they are stronger top to bottom is false. They are suppose to be a better conference, but I don't believe it in reality. This is all opinion and speculation so nobody freak out. There isn't a sure method to prove one conference is greater than another but if you could take the top 4 wac teams and the 4 top MWC teams and have a play off I believe it would be very very close. I think the WAC is stronger in the last two years, but who knows what this year will bring. Lets wait and see what BYU can do this year.
ccd3 is still a moron.....
It's obvious you hate the Broncos, and get ticked off about the Fiesta Bowl, but until Mendenhall wins a BCS bowl game, why should he be ahead of Peterson? What are their respective overall records over the past two seasons? I know Peterson is 23-3 as a head coach....what is Mendenhall?
And what do you mean by "bowl games wussed out of"? I dont know if beating a BAD UCLA team by only one point really means that much.....
The question
is who is the better coach right now, not in January 2007. Like I said, credibility for the Fiesta Bowl has about evaporated at this point. BSU followed that game by losing the WAC title and losing to an 8-5 East Carolina team in the Hawaii Bowl. Sorry, you're not the reigning Fiesta Bowl champs anymore. You're the reigning losers of the WAC and Hawaii Bowl. In the last 2 years Mendenhall played a tougher all-around schedule and has come up with two conference titles and two bowl wins. Peterson is 1-1 on both counts. That's why Mendenhall wins right now.
BSU wussed out of the Truck Stop bowl last year, chosing to play the "easier" ECU team over Georgia Tech. It was a brilliant move.
my two favorite teams...
the Vandals, and anyone who beats Boize Junior College.
Jr. College?
Explain exactly how BSU is a "Junior College"?
If you're going to keep calling them that, then remember that your pathetic Vandals LOSE to a "Junior College" every yeat... nice work!
I actually like that comeback
Even though I am a self-admitted Vandal Fanatic, I think this comeback about the Junior College thing is one of the better I have heard in a long time. Good job on the comeback, and also a good way to put us overzealous vandal fans in our place. I like it.
That poster likely wasn't ever BORN when BSU was a JC...
go figure.
PS YES, I WAS (1966). Puts me in Lincoln Elementary School in Nampa at the time.
right now?
If you're asking who the better coach is RIGHT NOW, and cant take into consideration anything from the past, then there is no answer...since the season hasn't started yet. if you're just going off of LAST year, then it would probably be Mendenhall. But if you're going off of each coach's respective tenure as a head coach, WHICH INCLUDES 2006 AND WINNING THE FIESTA BOWL, then you have to go with Peterson.
BSU didn't "wuss out" of the H-Bowl either....they elected to go to a DIFFERENT bowl and give the players a different experience. Too bad BSU couldn't have gone to the Vegas Bowl last year instead of a pathetic UCLA...the Broncos would have beaten BYU once again. In fact, I dont think BSU has EVER lost to BYU, or even a Mt. West conference team for that matter...
Quite being so bitter that Boise State won the Fiesta Bowl and get over it.
That's funny
"BSU didn't "wuss out" of the H-Bowl either....they elected to go to a DIFFERENT bowl and give the players a different experience."
That's like firing someone and then saying the company and the employee chose to go in different directions.
Different bowl, different experience=thinking you're too good for your own bowl game, choosing to play the weaker team, and then losing
=priceless
BYU taken down by BSU
I remember BYU losing to BSU because they couldn't make a feild goal. I think that was the 2004 or 2005 season. Petersen was the offensive something then but on the coaching staff. Do you remember that? Seems like you didn't include that in your little comparison up top. If you're going from the last two years since Coach Pete has been the head coach guess we will have to go to stats for bragging rights until the coaches go head to head with their respective teams.
2 white short sleeves visit Boise and leave in Blue!!!!
I do indeed think we learned a lesson in last years Bowl game. We need to get better at attacking the BCS teams when we can. I think that the short sidedness of your article would favor BYU. Let's go back 4 years and compare. Nobody wants to come to the Blue turf and play a home and home series. We need that parity to survive the even playing field battle with the BSC teams. We played BYU there and here. (BSU won both) I can't ever forget the Fiesta Bowl but I don't thrive on the past like some. We are in this years season and I think we are still in a rebuilding year because of 2 early departures. [Thanks for nothing} We have so many great athlete coming in all we need is intenal leadership on the team. Coach Pete and his staff are #1 and they will show you all in the next few years.
Another BSU connection with Dallas
While Murphy is listing guys at Cowboys camp and talking about a former BSU corner he missed the other former Boise State guy on the Cowboys even though he mentioned his name. ROFL
I bet Paul J wouldnt have.:)
The two worst teams...
I just wish BYU and Idaho would play...to bad I wouldn't know what to do...I can't stand most Vandal athletics and BYU stands for everything evil and corrupt in this part of the country...GOD...I would have to wear Vandal gear....I could never cheer for the Cougs...There you go...the one time Broncos cheer for Vandals...if they play BYU! BOOO BYU - Get you BYU babble out of here....go back to Utah!
This posting line is awesome!
You know, I cheered for BYU one time. It was when they lost to BSU by missing a last minute field goal. Right then, I turned to my BSU buddies, who were watching the game with me, and said that I would never cheer for BYU again in my life. I haven't, even if they were to play against Boise State again. You are so right, BYU stands for everything evil in this part of the world. I felt so dirty afterward, but I couldn't get the filth off. Point being, although I am going to try and cheer for Boise State if they are not playing Idaho this year, I will always cheer for the Broncos when they are playing BYU. Hate you BYU!!
Where is the article on this?
A Bronco and a Vandal make peace over hating BYU!
To bad we aren't in a bar...I would buy you a beer!
Point him to Patrick Orr's blog for suggestions on one instead!
At least you keep the reviews local : )
CCd3 has a legitimate argument....
for the first time in like a long time.
Compared side by side they are really close.
Take CCd3's anti-BSU bias out and I think it's a virtual toss up.
BSU wins the 06 round(Oregon is certainly no OU) and BYU the 07 round.
I'd have to give it to Mendenhall because his team is more poised for the big run this season. Had we finished strong then obviously it'd be Pete.
Now, I think the Broncos will have the better season even if they end up with the same record as BYU. BYU has to prove it, while Boise St. already has.
AHEM
Nobody has played a single game as of NOW so nobody has proven ANYTHING.
W's And L's kids, everything else is a whine column.
Murphy does not love Boise State
He writes this carp to get a rise out of you fans. Looks like it works. The best coach? What a joke. Mendenhall is handed the 'freebie' in recruiting for LDS kids. He doesn't have to work too hard at this, the peer pressure the religion puts on these kids to commit is more than enough to land 85% of the kids they target. Not many schools can claim this.
Give Pete the same advantage, and maybe then we could vote on who's the best.
My vote be best writer at the statesman would not include Mr North Carolina. Bitter man he is. Where did all this fan criticism of Scandrick come from? Making stuff up now to slam the fanbase murphy, because you're universally hated here? Some fans were upset he left early, but all of them would want him back right now. Either your grasp of the english language isn't very good, or you're just a tool looking to stir the pot, ala Prater.
You're from Eagle, Man...
Ya don't got H8az, ya gots PLAYAZ see?
Get wit tha FLOW homepiece, we gone
