Boise State wide receiver Vinny Perretta is doing his best Chuck Liddell impersonation at fall camp.
With his Mohawk, Perretta looks a lot like the Ice Man. He said teammates are calling him Chuck. Liddell is a UFC fighter for those not in the know.
But I found out today that Perretta is also providing haircuts to some of the other Broncos. Ian Johnson and Toshi Franklin are also rocking Mohawks. Truth be told: It looks pretty cool.
• On a more serious note, the Broncos seem very excited about having Perretta back in the fold. Injured in the season opener against Washington, Perretta played in just four games before ending his season with a shoulder injury. Perretta finished the year with nine receptions for 120 yards and five rushes for 30 yards.
"He’s a comfort-zone guy for the coaches because he’s played in so many games and made so many big plays and done so many good things that he’s a nice guy to have back in the mix," coach Chris Petersen said.
How will the Broncos use him with talented receivers Jeremy Childs, Titus Young and Austin Pettis already in the mix? Will he have a role in an already crowded backfield? Will he take snaps at quarterback, like he has done in the past?
"We'll bounce him around and use him all over the place. How much he gets in the backfield
I don't know. We'll bounce him around from back there and probably have some things designed for him," offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said.
Sounds like he's going to be pretty busy.
9:30 a.m. -- Former Boise State quarterback Taylor Tharp was around the football offices Monday, working out in the weight room and throwing passes to former defensive end Alex Guerrero. Tharp, who was a second-team All-WAC selection last year, is hoping for another chance in an NFL camp after spending much of the summer with the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers let Tharp, an undrafted free agent, go before training camp.
"It just didn't work out. They had great things to say about me. I have no bad words for that organization. They were top-notch all along," said Tharp, who is staying sharp for another camp invite or a chance to try out in the Arena Football League.
Guerrero, who will be doing color commentary on the Spanish-language Bronco radio broadcasts this fall, is also hoping to hook up with an Arena Football League team.
• Tharp probably knows better than anyone what the current Bronco quarterbacks are going through as they compete for the starting job. Tharp had an outside chance in 2006 to dethrone starter Jared Zabransky and then won the job in an open competition last season.
Tharp came into fall camp as the No. 2 QB behind Bush Hamdan.
"I learned you never know what's going to happen. You never know how it's going to play out as much as people try and predict who is going to be the starter," Tharp said.
Hamdan injured his hand early in fall camp opening the door for Tharp, who took advantage of his chance.
"Never count yourself out is the advice I would say," Tharp said. "You're one play away. With an open competition, you can string a few good days of practice together and then all of a sudden the coaches want to see what you can do with the (first-team)."
Tharp said none of the quarterbacks competing for the job have asked him for any advice.
"They don't need me to tell them what they need to do. If they don't know by now, they're in trouble," said Tharp, who shied away from predicting which quarterback would be the starter this season. "Those guys are all smart guys and they need to compete every day, but at the same time have fun."
