Others could miss Broncos' opener, too
Submitted by Brian Murphy on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 1:14pm.
Boise State coach Chris Petersen said that junior wide receiver Jeremy Childs has been suspended for the season opener Aug. 30 against Idaho State.
But Petersen also alluded to the fact that other players will miss that game, too.
"There probably will be" others suspended for that game," Petersen said. "And I’ll release that later."
Later means either the week before the Idaho State game or after the Idaho State game when the media asks why such-and-such didn't play.
Boise State is not alone. Georgia, the No. 1 team in the coaches' preseason poll, just suspended its fifth player.
1:14 p.m. — The Broncos opened practice Monday morning with veterans practicing for about 2 1/2 hours.
Wide receiver Jeremy Childs was there and fully participating. Coach Chris Petersen is expected to speak about the junior later this afternoon. Childs is expected to meet with the media Tuesday.
Childs did not play in the Broncos' Hawaii Bowl loss to East Carolina and was not enrolled in school for the spring semester.
According to Childs' brother, the wide receiver was suspended from school for a year because of plagiarism, but had the suspension reduced to a semester on appeal.
Boise State football beat writer Chadd Cripe will be breaking down the Broncos in more depth on his blog later today.
• While Boise State continues its quarterback competition, other schools in the WAC are struggling just to keep their QBs in camp.
Hawaii's Tyler Graunke, who did a real nice job of filling in for Colt Brennan last season, is not at practice.
"Tyler has things he has to work on," Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said yesterday in a release from UH. "At this point, he will not practice with the team. Because of privacy laws, I can't comment any further."
From the Star-Bulletin: The announcement further clouds the quarterback competition, which McMackin said earlier this week would be among Graunke, junior Inoke Funaki, and junior college transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch. Senior Jake Santos and freshman Shane Austin are also slated to participate in camp.
Utah State's Jase McCormick, who was supposed to compete for the starting job with Sean Setzer and Diondre Borel, has decided not to play football.
"Jase has had some major life changes," Utah State coach Guy said in a statement. "His focus is different and he's not going to play football anymore. He's just going to stress his academics and graduate in December. We respect his decision, we know it's been a difficult one for him and one that he has thought a great deal about. We're disappointed to see him leave and wish him the best."
