With $4 gas, even trash pickup could cost you more

As Exxon rakes in profits CNN estimates at $1,485 a second, even the cost of throwing out garbage is going up because of fuel costs.

Caldwell has approved a fuel surcharge to users of Allied Waste Services. Starting in August, residential customers will pay an extra 80 cents a month, and commercial customers will pay more, depending on frequency, type of use and load weights. Senior citizens will be charged 30 cents more a month.

The rates could be adjusted again in six months if fuel prices change.

Give that trash pickup a tune-up and charge for moving...

let us pay by the bag

And, aside from a bit of illegal dumping, you'll see the landfill last an additional 20 years and the collection costs go down.

Please don't tell the Mafia at Allied I said that though.

maybe we should think about...

generating less trash.

what a concept.

it will only blog and run for office...

come to think of it...

picking up trash costs a lot more than $4 a gallon.

Less Trash

The last city I lived in provided these giant cans that could be emptied mechanically. I did think it was rather unfair to pay the same rate as the neighbor who filled 2 giant cans each week, and I put out 1/2 a can full once a month. I can't see how to change the buy and throw away mentality as long as everyone is fixated on their "standard of living" as dictated by advertising.
