Risch: Two debates, and no more?
Submitted by Kevin Richert on Fri, 07/25/2008 - 9:26am.
Republican Senate candidate Jim Risch has agreed to a second debate in October — but that may be the end of the road.
Earlier this week, Risch said he would take part in an Oct. 8 debate in Lewiston. He is also committing to a Oct. 21 event sponsored by a media group headed by KTVB. "Those are the debates that we are doing," Risch told KFXD radio this morning.
This suggests Risch has no interest in taking part in the 10-city October road show orchestrated by Democrat Larry LaRocco and independent Rex Rammell. No surprise there; Risch has pooh-poohed these debates from the outset.
But it also might suggest Risch will again skip The Idaho Debates, a live debate aired statewide on Idaho Public Television and co-sponsored by a broad consortium, including the Statesman. Risch didn't directly mention The Idaho Debates, or the LaRocco-Rammell debate tour. (Disclosure: As vice president of the Idaho Press Club, another co-sponsor of The Idaho Debates, I've been part of a group organizing this fall's debates).
I'll give Risch credit for saying yes to the Lewiston debate. The more debates, the better. Extra credit too for saying yes to a debate outside Boise, and agreeing to a debate that will occur before a live audience and will be televised live. (These two concepts seem lost on the KTVB consortium, which barred reporters from attending its debates this spring, and did not air the events live).
Here's hoping Risch will participate in one more televised debate — especially one that Idahoans can watch, border to border, in real time.

Three debates is perfect
Good call on this one KR. Yes, Risch is in the assumed position where he could skip altogether. Props to him for not, and for the live forum in Lewiston.
But YES, Jim, you need to participate in the Idaho Debates - they are statewide, they are co-sponsored by the Idaho Press Club (disclosure - I am a member) and it is time to put any snit about IPTV or IPC or other group aside.
Now you can be "senatorial," and if you get unfairly zinged then say your piece about it. I certainly will - you know you have my vote, but you can solidify more with this one stepping up.
Debate skippers
I would like to see a list of high public officials who have skipped the debates, say, in the past five years. It only recently has become fashionable for Republicans to hide behind bogus "scheduling" excuses for missing what has traditionally been the most watched, most important and most informative debates in Idaho's recent history.
I would like to see what pattern of evasion emerges when you look at the Republican record of debate skipping over time.
I WISH you'd tell them to shut up and let you vote already...
My Deere is axle-deep in political manure. Go get pumpkins and turkeys and the green guy that stole Jeebus to kill him for Edward G. Robinson and Yul Brynner. Cue the Beach Boys. The Capitol Hills are alive wtih the Von Trapp Family and a lousy Nazi boyfriend...button down my mind, this is The End, cue the choppers, I'm stirred yet unshaven.
Hmm.
