Zappa alert! Lagunitas releases latest FZ tribute beer
Submitted by Patrick Orr on Thu, 07/24/2008 - 10:37am.
NoCal-based Lagunitas Brewing Co. has released their latest Frank Zappa tribute beer — a Belgian-style Tripel with the cover of FZ’s 1968 classic “We’re Only In It For The Money” album as the label.
The brewers at Lagunitas are Zappa freaks and have pledged to brew a unique beer for each of Zappa’s record releases — which should be interesting since he put out about 10 million different records or so during his lifetime.
This is the fourth FZ-themed beer Lagunitas has brewed in honor of Zappa, and the first they have gone away from the British styles to something else — in this case a Belgian.
Regular readers know I am not fond of Belgian beers — many are too sweet or sour or yeasty for me. But if any brewer can deliver a Belgian-style that might work for a British-style guy like me, Lagunitas is likely it.
I’m probably going to give the beer a little leeway for a different reason — “We're Only In It For The Money” is a spoof of the most overrated pop record of all time, “Sgt. Pepper’s”.
How can I not enjoy a beer in tribute to an artist who was ballsy enough make fun of the Beatles in 1968?
22 ounce bottles of the “We’re Only In It For The Money” are available at the Boise Co-Op for the very reasonable price of $3.19 ($3.38 with tax). I bought one last night but did not have time to drink.
Contributors to the Beer Advocate Web site give it a B+. It sounds pretty good for a Belgian. I can’t wait to try it.
For my money, last year’s “Kill Ugly Radio” Imperial IPA release was the highpoint of the series so far.
It is going to be interesting to see what Lagunitas comes up with as they continue the series - like what kind of beer will they brew to celebrate “Weasels Ripped My Flesh” or “Joe’s Garage”?

Freak Out! Ale
The Brewers of Lagunitas Freak Out! Ale reaches retailers this week around the Bay Area. Tony Magee, the co-founder of Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma, worked out an agreement with Zappa's family in Southern California for rights to produce the beer using Zappa's name. The label is the original cover of Freak Out!
This is a most unusual beer for Lagunitas, a brewery famous for big, malty bombs. Freak Out! is strong, all right — about 7.3 percent alcohol by volume. But the taste is quite dry with a strong finish with a lot of hop bitterness. If a huge hop package pleases you, don't miss this one. It's a blend of pale malt and malted wheat and a couple of new hops, which Lagunitas isn't talking about.
Freak Out! is the first of a series of Zappa tributes, Magee says. "We will be doing a label every nine months or so as the other (Zappa album) anniversaries come up," he says. "Next, Absolutely Free next summer, then Lumpy Gravy and We're Only In It For The Money, Uncle Meat, Hot Rats and so on and so on and so on. ... Fun, it is!"
...What's the ugliest part of your body..

they can't do that ONE SONG that sums it up and you can't say that on a label either.
