Big mountain bike race set Aug. 2

The longest, continuous-running mountain bike race in the Northwest, the 24th annual Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge, will be Aug. 2 in Mackay.

Riders, from professionals to beginners, will mass on Main Street at high noon. That's going to be some sight in this small town.

The mountain bikers gain 2,300 feet in elevation during a nine-mile ascent followed by a roller-coaster descent to the valley floor. The White Knob is designated as a NORBA classic. Competitors also receive points towards the Knobby Tire Series championships. Medals and prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each of the 30 race categories.

This is out of my league but it sounds like a lot of fun.

You can register online at: www.sportsbaseonline.com . There is a $10 late fee for day-of registration.

There is free camping in the Mackay Tourist Park. For more information, access: www.knobbytireseries.com or www.lostrivercycling.org.

I'm probably going to stick to the Table Rock Trail.

Who won?`
