Updated -- Random shots: Sellouts, not-so-sellouts, Dodos, Lyle Lovett
Submitted by Michael Deeds on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 12:10pm.
—Although I wasn't able to attend, I drove through Expo Idaho to check out last Saturday's Gem State Jam while Built To Spill was performing. There was a nice stage, lots of tents ... and empty bleachers. Attendance looked to be a few hundred. Nick Weiner, vice-president of local promoter GSquare Productions, had this to say in an e-mail today: "We really marketed the event hard and think the bike race (Twilight Criterium), the heat, and a few other circumstances resulted in a smaller then expected crowd. While we are obviously disappointed in the turnout we couldn't be happier with the overall production and execution of the day. The bands said the festival was run very professionally and that for a first year festival we should be encouraged. Doug Martsch said we should make it a once a year tradition." Undeterred, GSquare is considering "something possibly for Labor Day," Weiner says, "as well as fall dates at the Egyptian."
—1,000-capacity Knitting Factory says Monday night's Josh Ritter/Andrew Bird concert was a sellout. Nice job, Boise! (OK, actually, it was about 20 tickets from being totally sold out.) It's fun to be a homer about such a friendly, talented guy. Ritter is definitely terrific. (Even if some of the most extreme complimentary worship from select hyperventilating fans feels like a bit much.)
—It wasn't the biggest-attended Alive After Five of the season, but indie-rockers The Dodos had a blast July 2. Dodos singer Meric Long tells Club Planet that Boise was his favorite tour stop this summer: "Everyone was really enjoying it in this honest, unpretentious way. I could feel that, and it made us smile and have a really good time. It was so refreshing." Yep, it's incredible how many unpretentious people exist outside hipster bars.
—Update: To make up for Pato Banton's cancellation Aug. 6, Alive After Five has booked a fusion jazz guitarist: Fareed Haque and The Flat Earth Ensemble. Excellent. I'd rather see Haque, anyway. (Although it's too bad he isn't playing with his other band, Garaj Mahal.)
—Remember, Lyle Lovett is sold out tonight at the Idaho Botanical Garden. I'll update this blog with any weather-related news. Right now, the show is a go. The lawn may be wet tonight, so low-back — NOT HIGH-BACK — chairs are recommended. Umbrellas will not be allowed, because they block the view. Bring a poncho.

Josh Ritter and Andrew Bird were awesome
but count me out on paying money to listen to either of them at the Knitting Factory ever again. It would have been nice to have enough seating so that we could have relaxed and actually been able to SEE them. Does that place own air conditioning?
summer slaughter was better
air conditioning did suck though, but the aborted, despised icon, vader, cryptopsy, and black dahlia ruled the stage. now if only dying fetus would play somewhere with a bar and not a bunch of 14 year old with straight edge shirts
Summer Slaughter? Lovett, er, love it
I just got home from the Lyle Lovett concert 15 minutes ago. Excellent -- just like The Black Dahlia Murder was on Sunday night. (Black Dahlia was the only band I showed up to catch -- or especially cared to see -- at Summer Slaughter. But I'm glad to hear others were solid.) I'll post more about Lovett tomorrow. Must. Sleep. Now.
I know what you mean...
Somebody told me I looked bad and asked if I sleep and I said yes, in the mornings...
I finally got two computers running, one for me and one for the neighbor to study his GED work and I found an 802.11g wireless router for $5.75 at a thrift store, works perfectly!
NOW I can properly die for the night.
only went for black dahlia?
black dahlia comes here all the time. did you not see the awesome wall of death crytopsy pulled off? necrophagist and dying fetus are coming
Nope, I'm more of a melodeath guy ...
Plus I have an infant son. So sneaking out of the house isn't easy. I ran down to the show for an hour, saw BDM, and hauled back home. I know, not very metal. I wouldn't mind seeing Necrophagist ... but realistically, I probably won't on a Thursday night at The Venue.
I'm hoping for Children of Bodom this fall; a show is on the table. Disliked their last two Hot Topic-infused albums, but dig the earlier neo-classical stuff.
A table show would be dangersous and you'd spill Cheerios.
Not even Ozzy could dig WTH all that is, even w/free whiskey
you have to work a bit
to go to a show. Bird and Ritter rocked the Knitting Factory, but so did I in my squished stance to keep my legs from giving out - nothing new and unexpected when attending a Knitting Sleazy show. The next nite contrasted a bit...still some work from waiting in the long line to get in but worth the wait as we lugged in our cooler of goodies (no booze of course) and settling down in the grass. In the end, you gotta pay the price and settle for the far-away spots in the grass w/the wait or stand like a sheep herd to earn a good view......Lyle, Bird and Ritter definitely were worth the effort.
Great Concert Week
I had so much fun at the Gem State Jam!!! Good vibes & sound! cant wait for the next one.
Josh Ritter is the man. good stuff! but yeah..they need to crank up the ac on sell outs...it was like a sauna in there..yuck.
At least there was no CHICKEN WIRE in front of the stage...
RAWHIDE!!!!!
CHILDREN OF BODOM AYE?
THEY ARE GREAT LIVE AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM AGAIN, YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO THEY MIGHT BE PLAYING WITH?
Nope
And, to be clear, the show is far from confirmed. I just know it's a possibility.
a lil birdy told me theres a
a lil birdy told me theres a chance electric six is coming back, you have any info on that?
Haven't heard that, but it's possible
On the other hand, singer Dick Valentine and guitarist The Colonel have been pretty busy recording the music for milk campaigns.
That was over a year ago when I found it...or maybe U linked 1st
if electric six did come
if electric six did come here it would be around nov 2nd
I can see that one...
"Elect Electric Six for a local Six scandal"!
