Clueless campers

How many years have conservationists, land managers and others been talking about good camping practices?

20? 30? 40? Huh?

So the first things we spot when driving into a campsite on the South Fork of the Payette River last weekend were empty beer bottles lined up around a campfire ring. Inside the ring was a plastic bottle. On the outskirts of the campsite were pieces of used toilet paper.

Glass, paper and plastic just don't magically disappear in the woods. And get this, the clueless campers cut green pine limbs for firewood.

Is it pavement people? Is it people who don't give a darn?

Camping 101 might be a good practical subject in elementary school. Who knows?

Anyway, I devoted next Sunday's column to good camping practices, just to rant and rave.

Good camping, and you'd better bring plenty of trash bags to pick up after the clueless.

Slob's 101

Pete,I couldn't agree more with your comments. What kind of people camp anymore? I live in Lowman and I see them every day. What is more, they all race thru here as fast as they can pulling their toys to be the first ones to get to their parking spots.Doesn't seem like a very relaxing way to " get away from it all ". The slobs are the reason forest managers have closed off so many roads around here.

Right on!

I don't understand going camping if you're going to race up there and then leave early Sunday morning to race back to town to mow the lawn.

I really worry about the undeveloped camping spots along the South Fork of the Payette River. They are so beautiful and so nice for camping but people trash them. Some of us like to be self-sufficient camping and don't like developed campgrounds.

The toilet paper and waste problems in the undeveloped areas are scary.

If you are going to talk about camping slobs

Put in a short section on hot springs etiquette.

Just a suggestion.

Educate the slobs

Good rant Zimo - keep ragging on the slobs that ruin it for everyone else (sounds like the dog poop thing).

We always pack out a lot of trash others leave in the woods. Generally we police the area before we set up the camp. If you can pack that beer in in bottles you can pack the darn bottles back out! Don't know what kind of IQ it takes to think glass goes in a camp fire(grrrr) A plastic bag to collect the used t-paper should be a no brainer. And burning your plastic forks and food wrappers in the burn rings is not classy either.

/end rant

If you're lucky...

they'll all be stupid enough to find the river or some dumb thing?

Ain't happenin' but it's mayhem in the back of the mind, no?

I thought that Garbagescaping was taught in our Schools...

... because you can drive hundreds of miles on European freeways and rarely see one piece of garbage along the roadsides.

Our residential garbage cans are also several time bigger than theirs. But hey, we have to keep boosting our econmy while lessening our anomie.

Sorry I have to give credit to parents who

...teach children to place subtle messages everywhere to demonstrate that America is in deep trouble.

Would you mind hinting at what you are rambling about?

Or at least reply to the post you are talking about?

Most AOL users have figured this by now.
