Rush hour with the guv: the Otter road show

If Boiseans want a say on Idaho's crowded and aging roads, they can hop in a car Monday afternoon, brave a few of those crowded and aging roads during the after-work commute, and attend Gov. Butch Otter's shindig in Caldwell.

Good luck with that.

Or they can hold out hope that the governor's transportation team comes to its senses and blocks out some public meeting time in the state's largest city.

Our editorial board met with the transportation team this afternoon, and we spent a good deal of time talking about Otter's plans to hold six statewide meetings on the state's highway problems. The only Treasure Valley hearing is scheduled for Monday at the College of Idaho's Simplot Dining Hall; public comments will be taken from 4 to 7 p.m.

The idea was to hold one meeting in each of the Idaho Transportation Department's six districts. The Caldwell site was chosen to make sure to give a say to Canyon County commuters, said Clete Edmunson, Otter's transportation adviser.

A Canyon County hearing makes sense — except, of course, those Canyon County commuters will now have to fight rush hour to attend a meeting in their own backyard.

It's too late for the Otter team to change that, but there's no reason they can't add a public meeting in Boise.

Otter is already working with U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo on an Aug. 26 transportation summit in Boise, to address federal and state issues. The schedule hasn't been set, but a three-hour public comment period isn't part of the plan, ITD chief Pam Lowe said.

My guess: Plans are likely to change. Edmunson said he already has offered to take the transportation presentation on the road at any legislator's request; Democratic Sen. Kate Kelly has already requested a meeting in her Southeast Boise district, shooting for an Aug. 28 session. At the meeting's end, Edmunson said Otter's staff will add a Boise meeting if they feel there's a need for one.

Well, there's a need. To pass higher taxes and fees in a tough economy, you can't afford to alienate anyone. And it really shouldn't be up to legislators or editorial boards to goad a governor into a little common-sense outreach.

Does the Gov toss sweaty scarves into the crowd?

A meeting about transportation

with representatives who know nothing about transportation? As if Otter knows. The same guy who would have raised vehicle registration 600% to come up with $280 million for roads? All the meetings in all the counties in all the states won't accomplish anything without people who know transportation. All these politicians we keep electing by way of campaign finance is why our roads are crowded & aging. Who promoted all the growth without the infrastructure & why? Would politicians lsiten to anybody who didn't contribute to their campaigns & will the same politicians do anything except favors in return? NO!

People with money, {developers} contributed to people they wanted in office, {Otter} same story accross the nation, & the infrastructure is $2 trillion in the red. Who is going to pay? We all know the answer to that question. Feel good meetings by people who are suppose to be doing the job but don't have a clue, are asking for suggestions, won't listen to anyone but the people who contributed to their campaigns, & we're suppose to go for it again?

If we elected people based on their knowledge instead of the amount of money contributed through campaign finance, we might have competent people running government & the infrastructure would be fine.

A meeting with Otter about a fashon statement, or how to buy Levis would be productive. How to win a tight jeans contest maybe or pretend to be a Texas Ranger with a trophy wife. Some of US just aren't a slave to fashon like Butch or Gus. I wonder if he's Gus on Saturday or when riding the pony on his own time.

I'm going to hear all about this. Sorry Foreignoregonian, I pushed a little to hard & over the edge she went. One of the best jokes I've seen on this blog was the Casper thing you kicked me with way back when, that was original. If a guy can't laugh at those things I guess he might as well crawl in a bottle of booze or pills & die all alone.

I hear that since Bush has waterboarding & wiretapping OKED by Congress, a new anti virus had to be developed, anti blogger stalker. Looks like we'll all need it. It's tough being wrong all the time but good to know we have big brother looking out for US.

Otter has it right

Meeting with "people who know transportation" will be important, but right now he needs to know if roads are truly a priority of the people. He needs to know if the people will support higher taxes, and if so how much, and what if they go to roads not in your district.

Until Otter is tight with what the people demand and will stand for, he is not ready to meet with road people to see what can be done.

To make the point - roads are not a top priority for me. I would be hot if the Governor were off meeting with transportation people assuming that I wanted him to. He made that mistake with his car tax idea, assuming we would pay for the roads and we said "not that way." Okay, now he's listening.

I am confused with "If we elected people based on their knowledge instead of the amount of money contributed through campaign finance, we might have competent people running government & the infrastructure would be fine." Do you have any data that shows "competent people running government" equals a fine infrastructure? Or perhaps a national directory of fine infrastructure so I can see who the competent people are?

InfraSTRUCTURE

Brains, Brawn or Bounty...

No guarantee of no Bozos.

Strange that Gov. Otter wants suggestings/ideas,

wants to give the boss an opportunity, our two cents worth. I started a site a few years ago to give the American taxpayer that exact opportunity, www.nextrevolution.net
Ideas in which we support each other. Ideas by the boss to solve problems like Social Security which our representatives use to get votes but never solve the problem.

I started this after working for the Nebrasksa Dept. of Forestry where my boss was stealing but I'm not going back into all that again. I also started this site because our representatives talk about doing something about Social Security just about this time, every four years, just before a presidential election like Obama & McCain are now. After the election it will be a nonissue until the next election & nothing will have been done?

One of the ideas I have on Nextrev is to allow people in a finacial bind to use their 401 without paying the 10% penalty, pay the taxes deferred but not the penalty. I put an email on Nextrev which I recently received suggesting basically the same. I'm not all about giving people who invested, fipped houses, or whatever, a pass. I do believe that if we as taxpayers, some obviously taken in less than honest banking & loan scams which has our government bailing out with our tax $, might get a break on penalties in tax deferred savings so as to keep a property in which they live. I'm not a banker or a government representative, but wouldn't fewer foreclosures be better than more? Am I losing my home or in foreclosure? No, I'm not doing this for myself. Do I pay Socail Security? I have for most of my life & would like to think I might have something there should I need it. If I'm not mistaken Social Security is a safety net, not retirement.

Some people suggest I'm way out of line in kicking every branch of government, both parties, & every governmnet agency. Some of these people actually served in the military, served being the key word. They fight for our rights & to preserve freedom. Sorry buit that's the deal,
I like most Americans appreciate it. We do however believe that giving up our free speech was not part of the deal should someone who served think we don't have the right to exercise those rights & bash government.

If some who served, think they should have the right to tell those who they fought for, fought to preseve those rights for, to tell US we suddenly do not have the rights they fought to preserve, we need to either set the record straight or change the rules. If giving those who served, the final say in everything from free speech to whatever they feel they should dictate, we need to get it out in the open.

From what I understand, some are now suggesting our representatives need to hear from the people to decide if issues we pay these representatives to oversee, really need our attention. I'm a little confused. If I say the roads are bad, agreeing with the Gov. that they need attention, I'm wrong. If I say banking is in the same mess it was in the 80's, even though headlines suggest government bail out banking, I'm wrong. Some even suggest like vietnam, the banking scandals of the eightes are old news & should be forgotten? Yet here we are in Iraq & banking?

If I suggest the USDA & FDA aren't getting the job done, even though like roads & banking, it's all over the front page, I'm wrong. Front page stories about salmonelia, E. Coli, food posioning, Mad Cow, & what ever tell me the FDA & USDA don't have the people to do the inspections. It's tomatoes for months & suddenly peppers? So the people who were eating peppers instead of tomatoes feel better?

I call the USDA & report a highly subsidized local Dairy for transportation & warehousing for unsanitary conditions & the USDA makes them clean it up. Possible kickbacks in transportation in the corporation that sent out a letter asking for information into fraud saves millions & I'm wrong & fired. The same corproation saves millions of $, reduces miles & fuel usage by millions of miles & gallons & I'm wrong?

Now the same Gov. who had a flunky send me a letter telling me the USDA & FDA do inspections, wants ideas on roads? If the USDA did inspections why did they have the highly subsidized dairy which I called in, clean up the conditions I reported? Sorry but if trucks that haven't been washed out in two years had been inspected, I wouldn't be calling the USDA. I don't think the USDA is really getting the inspections done. Ever seen a semi trailer used for hauling dairy product, not washed out in two years? Sorry but milk leaks & it get's pretty bad after two years in Idaho's high desert when trailers sit with doors closed. There are pics on Nextrev but pictures don't smell. There are also pictures of milk being dumped on the ground & fed to hogs.

There are also pics of hogs being shot at the same location by who I would suggest are illegal immigrants. Hogs butchered out in the open with dust blowing around, dust should you look at the pics, with no doubt less than desirable crap in it. How much did the hog farmer receive for those hogs & were taxes reported or paid for hogs or labor? How much did the dairy pay the farmer to take the milk in the higly subsidized dairy industry? How many gallons of perfectly fine milk gets dumped along with bad? How many times is milk rerun as pictures on Nextrev indicate before it makes it to your kid or should it have been hog food? I've seen it trucked from Boise to Fruitland, ID & back three to four times before it was done right, maybe.

How many of these fine fed hogs made it to market & who enjoyed this fine pork chop fed & raised in such fine conditions? The next time you enjoy a glass of $3 a gallon milk with your $10 pork chop you can be greatful your tax $ is paying for inspections never done while paying representatives elected through campaign finance from contributions from Agri corruption. Got milk? How much of your tax went to the $280 billion farm bill, USDA, & FDA for inspections never done?

Gov. Otter is asking for ideas while our representatives are day to day in bailing out Fannie & Freddie, Social Security is front page until after the election again. Now for some reason our representatives with a 9% approval rating are asking for ideas on a city, county, & state level? The big dogs in DC however have it all under control? Why is America is the sad state it is if everything is going so great?

I don't kick government to do America harm. I'm trying to give average Americans who go to Iraq & Afghanistan a little say in government besides voting for someone they can later give a 9% approval rating. I suggest we be allowed the opportunity to bring ideas to table while some suggest is why government, politicians we elect make decisions. I guess I was wrong in understanding the pitch by some, supporting politicians through voting because those politicians were saying what some wanted to hear but now they are doing something else. People vote them in because they are going to do what these people want but these people don't want them to make decisions until they know what the same people who voted them in wanted? It's all a little confusing & contridicting unless you realize, well I'll leave it up to the imagination.

I'd like to say that roads aren't an issue but the infrastructure, America's roads, rail, electrical grid, & so on have been in the news, common knowledge in fact, in need of funding for years. $2 trillion in need of funding isn't an issue to some people? Fix it today or fix it tommorrow at higher prices? I sould have confidence in decisions or ideas made by people who voted these politicians into offce? How would someone who voted for these for clowns who can't find $240 million for roads, have any idea as to the condition of our infrastructure?

Building hundreds of thousands of houses through loans from banks, in neighborhoods with no roads or electrical grid to support the development? What did the banks do with all the money they made? Buy a politicians through campaign finance? I imagine we'll read a lot more about crooked developers than crooked politicians.

Substations are suddenly popping up years after developments & Idaho Power wants to raise rates? Foreclosures are a year in the works with banking in trouble, seems a little backwards. Building four lane roads in the same neigborhoods where new houses sit empty while new houses go up next to them makes sense?

Whatever you do, don't say anything. Someone who fought for your rights will suggest you haven't the right. If you have any ideas, keep them to yourself until things get so bad the people we elect to make decisions, ask for your ideas. I wonder if they will be taking a cut in pay since they can't get the job done? Their pockets are already lined with campaign contributions & the next development is in the works. Doesn't matter that the road or electrical grid isn't finished where the last development has 100 empty houses. Somebody is still making bank & somebody is bailing out the bank.

Government, corporate unAmerica, & agri corruption won't be happy until every individual taxpayer is strapped. Gov. Otter still wants to raise vehicle registration. How many truckers have gone broke & who does the Gov. think is going to pay those taxes when the rates to bring food to the table is shifted from registration taxes to consumer?

The truth in the $280 billion farm bill is that corporate farms making big money aren't paying break even money to carriers who go broke, leaving fewer carriers to choose from. When there are so few truckers that corporate farms have to pay rates gouging the coprorate farm, the cost of food will go up & the consumer will pay. Add sales tax to the tax $ paid for the $280 billion farm bill & what do you get? It won't be money for roads. Government needs to put some people in the business of transportation who know transportation.

Asking how to do the job I vote for people to do, after they're in office is why I voted for them. People who had millions of $ contributed to their campaign & handed out favors in retrun are responsible for this mess & it's time for accountability.

When we stop electing our representatives on campaign finance resulting in the buddy plan like appointees in the Idaho Tax Commission, we'll have an infrastructure capable of handling the needs. When we stop the corporate welfare & favors in return for campaign finance we'll have money for roads. When we hold the people we elect responsible for their failure instead of giving them suggestions on how to do the job we elected them to do after they fail, we'll have an infrastructure in place before houses & failing banks.

Suggesting our representatives are getting the job done is about as far from the truth as Gov. Otter being a Texas Ranger, except in his own mind. Why are they asking for suggestions if they are getting the job done?

I lost you somewhere

So your whole point here is that Governor Otter should NOT be meeting with the people to discuss Idaho's roads because he is unfulfilled as a Texas Ranger, failed us in Nebraska, appointed buddies to the Tax Commission, swindled us with the Farm Bill, hasn't maintained our grid, and did something wrong with hogs in Viet Nam?

When I saw you excessively long post I was hoping for some thoughts and substance...

What would you have Otter do? Not what should he have done...that's pigs under the bridge...but now, today, should he take the road discussion to the people or should he hide in the Capitol and spring a plan on us in January? Your call.

It's not what I would have Otter do so much as

what's Otter going to do? He's the Gov., make the decision, make up his mind, come up with a plan, & follow through. He's all about blaming legislature when they don't get it done but when he doesn't get it done, he asks the people he was elected to represent how to do the job? Otter gets after legislature but I'm wrong for getting after Otter? Seems to me he could have had $68 million, it wasn't $240 million so it wouldn't do. Now he'll take anything he can get?

I think that is the point you missed in my long & drawn out post. Government, every agency is failing in every way possible, & if you suggest anything, it's not going to work or they wouldn't have listened, & now they are asking because they can't get it done or done right. We elect these people to do a job, they can't get it done so now they ask how. What are we paying them for? Pigs under the bridge is like Vietnam & banking, forget it & happens again?

Hide in the capitol until spring? No, come up with a plan, come up with money, cut government spending/waste. I don't know how to make it any more clear than suggesting campaign finance has our representatives handing out tax cuts which could be $ used for roads. Do the businesses who contribute to our representatives who then get elected, need the roads to move their product or is it just the employees who need the roads to get to the corporations to do the job created by the corporation? If you have individuals paying all the taxes they don't have money to pay for roads & support the economy.

Could I make it any more clear that the Idaho Tax Commission needs to quit giving in to corporations heavy into tax knowledge while Gov. Otter's appointees suggest corporations can't be bullied. Everyday taxpayers who aren't heavy into tax knowledge can be bullied? If you get $500 or $1000 from 10,000 individuals it'll make up for $50K or $75K from each of 100 corporations don't pay? If there are loop holes that corproations are using to get away from paying taxes, change tax laws so that accountants can't manipulate the system.

It seems to me that if corporations with millions to give to our representatives, pay lobbyist, & hire accountants, paid the same money into taxes instead, we'd have money for roads. What am I missing? Give millions into campaign finance so you don't pay millions into taxes for roads & the people who are elected due to campaign finance can't come up with the money for roads so they ask the taxpayer? I made a suggestion, there is an idea or two for Otter but will he act on it? Will our representatives act on it? Not if it is going to cost them the next election? What's more important? It's clear to me that it's easier to gouge the individual taxpayer for $10 more in auto registration so they have less & truckers a 3% increase which will be passed along to the consumer. If i'm not mistaken consumer spending drives a very large part of the economy. How much can youtax them before they can no longer support the economy?

There was an article in the Statesman a while back about hidden fees added to everything we buy, millions of $. Why wouldn't our representatives go after that money? I forget the numbers but I think it was thosuands of dollars a year by every taxpayer in the nation. If my wife & I are each paying $1,000 a year in fees to every thing under the sun, wouldn't that be a good place to come up with a little money for roads? Go after the people & business getting these fees we don't realize they're nickle & diming US to death with. I think I posted something on here. AG Wasden, along with several other AGs might have been doing just that in some small measure. I think I wrote an editorial about it.

Here it is.

Gov. Otter & Idaho's legislator's $200 million shortfall for roads while handing out tax cuts to promote business is DC politics. They can't do simple math, reason being campaign finance. Presidential primaries are a perfect example. Candidates raise millions for their campaigns while on our payroll, not doing the job we pay them to do.

The Statesman printed two articles recently about hidden fees costing every US adult $942 a year & Idaho AG Wasden & 25 other states getting partial refunds. $942 per adult would generate money for Idaho roads as well as every other state. Tax campaign contributions given to candidates not yet on our payroll, take campaign contributions from candidates on our payroll. Your boss wouldn't allow you to take money from an outside source to secure a better job & then give great deals costing the company money, why do you? We have a $9 trillion debt growing at over a million dollars a minute, proving campaign finance & tax cuts don't work.

Campaign finance gets politicians elected for personal & corporate gain at the expense of individuals! Front page Otter says he'll listen to ideas, prove it.

That editorial was written months ago, here it is July with Gov. Otter asking for ideas. Otter was all over the front page with some wow, I'm a wannabe Texas Ranger with a trophy wife article & he still doesn't have a clue on where to get money for roads? Priorities, evidently we know where Gov. Otter's are.

For some reason people always take offense to a taxpayer kicking government. They work for US, they aren't getting the job done, so why wouldn't I hold them accountable? Was there any substance in the above suggestions? I suppose it would be wrong to suggest corporations give money to roads instead of campign finance? It would be wrong for corporations to pay taxes for roads instead of millions for lobbyist? It would be out of the question to ask corporations to pay taxes for roads instead of accountants heavy into tax knowledge so as to avoid paying taxes?

I think there would be enough money to cover the $240 million shorfall in the suggestions I just made if the people of Idaho all came together & told Gov. Otter where it is, go get it. Is the Gov. going to go after it if I'm the only one who suggests he do the job we pay him to do when it would require stepping on his contributor's toes? How about state representatives? Want to talk about some real money? How about DC & campaign finance? Who is getting away without paying taxes in that shell game?

America needs approximately $2 trillion to get our infrastructure back to where it should be. $942 a year from every American without taking a dime out of their pockets would be a good start. We're already paying it to hidden fees so we wouldn't even miss it. How many adults are there in Idaho? Multiply that by $942 & Idaho has a little extra cash all of the sudden. How do we get it? Do I have to solve that problem as well? I will if the Gov. can't get it done but it seems to me Wasden has a little experience so along with Gov. Otter they can take the ball & run with it. I am paying them for more than aksing me how to do their job. Pay me their salaries & I'll show you where to get the money & how. I can't get it for you, you have to step up as well.

I suppose that was a little to much to read? Can problems be solved in 50 words or less? I made the call, jump in & help anytime.

"...they aren't getting the job done..."

In your opinion. Not a fact.

You write that Otter is "a wannabe Texas Ranger with a trophy wife...& he still doesn't have a clue on where to get money for roads."

Where should his idea have come from? A) the Texas Rangers, or B) the trophy wife?

I'm not sure where the roads money should come from. I have conflicted ideas on the issue, but you seem to know. So where should it come from?

LOL!

What is ghostie's problem, anyway? Somehow we were supposed to sign on to his revolution?

Shades of Che.

Ghostie? Nice, short, you seem to be looking for help

from someone? That's good, you reply to someone who doesn't like name calling with ghostie? You know the fire dept. used to come around & get cats out of trees, should we call to see if they'll, never mind. It's a good thing we had the American Revolution when We weren't afraid to do something about taxation without representation. It's not hard to imagine which side of the argument you would have been on at the time & if we would have ever taken it upon ourselves to have a revolution should it have been up to you. How's your tea?

That's the great thing about America, nobody has to sign up for anything they don't want. Funny, today's business page in the Statesman points to a credit card scam. Like hidden fees, millions of taxpayers are paying yet we can't come up with $ for roads without a taxpayer suggesting our representatives go to these hidden fees & credit card scams to get funding for roads. Many of the people mentioned in this article never signed up or even gave their credit card number to the company charging them $12 to $59.99 a month. Notice the words, signed, never. Shoppers ultimately declined the offers.

I find it interesting that the economy is not doing well, government can't come up with $ for roads, taxpayers who will no doubt pay more & higher taxes for roads, we can't expect government to go after $ taxpayers are paying through hidden fees & credit card scams, & should an American mention it, others call him names for the idea. That's the nice thing about America, the way we stand united. No wonder government, {I watched Bush try to convince reporters yesterday that the economy is just fine,} can't come up with the money for roads. I wonder why people are maiing a run on some banks & the stock market is falling. I liked the part where Bush gave Americans credit for being so smart, we'll drive less if the price of gas goes up. Our representatives are all about raising vehicle reigistration to cover the cost of roads, for driving less? Raising gas taxes might not help raise more $ if we drive less. Drive half the miles paying twice the tax & what do you get? Even $?

Terrorist will have a tough time beating this great nation of leaders & let's not forget, followers.

Maybe Gov. Otter should look for highway funding in places Idaho taxpayers are already paying money yet don't realize? A revolution in the 21st century doesn't have to one in which we pick up guns if that is what you're afraid of. With today's technology I would think we could come up with $ for roads the same way hidden fees & credit card scams get taxpayer $. All I would expect from my representatives would be to go after money taxpayers already pay into fees we don't know we're being charged, $ we wouldn't miss because we're already paying with no knowledge. Imagine that, a taxpayer willing to pay more for roads out of pocket as long as my representatives take it upon themselves to go get the money from companies taking it in less than honest ways.

I suppose that's a little tough to understand, a little over the head, selwayguy? If you would like to get into a name calling game, I could come up with a few, finish the fire dept joke which I know you would take offense to. If you're against the American people, taxpayers having any say in government, just say so. I have to believe the American people would appreciate you telling them their ideas aren't worth hearing. I'll put your name, phone, address & email on the site if you like, hand it over. That is what the revolution you would have no part of is about. You want your say on this blog but you don't think the Amerian people have any ideas to help their country or should have the right to present them? Seems to me this is what Gov. Otter is asking for, ideas. Do you just want to bash someone willing to promote the though of Americans having ideas to help America? Why? Is it something you're afraid of or just don't understand? Leave a night light on if it helps.

I know, now I've offended you after you called me a name, & it's all my fault. Ghostie? Still feel offened yet could care less about how those you offend feel? I liked Foreignoregonian's response directly to me, Casper. It was original, had something. Ghostie? Kind of weak in name calling or joke dept. Keep practicing & working to get others on your side, like the night light, a real confidence builder I suppose.

Which Bush press conference did you watch?

Mr. Greyghost, you wrote: "No wonder government, {I watched Bush try to convince reporters yesterday that the economy is just fine,} can't come up with the money for roads."

First of course you have confused Idaho's and Governor Otter's obsession with road building with the federal government of which Mr. Bush is the President.

Bush did not try to convince reporters that the economy is fine. This paper wrote "Bush found few encouraging things to say."

Bush said it has indeed "been a difficult time for many...families...," that the country and economy were headed in the wrong direction and that he and Congress had failed to solve some of our difficult problems.

He said there "is no short term solution" to gas prices nor our economic challenges.

The President did remind us that most of our money was insured in the banks and that the government would work to prop up the mortgage lending institutions in trouble - just a few assurances.

What exactly did you watch? You can find fault with Bush for many things but don't wrongly say that he tried to convince reporters that the economy is fine. He did no such thing.

You said maybe your post was over my head...hmmm, perhaps you did not understand the President's statements.

How else could Bush react?

The man has been in the White House from surplus to the current situtation, all but recession, banks are failing. If all of Bush's policies & management plans for America are working, why was he answering questions?

Maybe I'm wrong & Bush has no say in anything. Maybe we don't need a president. I used to think all branches of governmnet were set up to work together, balance, all I see these people do is fight back & forth. Republicans called Clinton a liar & harrassed him for eight years & now democrats do the same. How can we as a nation get anything done when both parties are liars accusing the other party of being liars? I'm just one person blaming both parties, calling as I see it.

I'm not republican or democrat, I was all over Clinton for things he did in office which republicans were trying to get him out of office for but at least the economy wasn't one of them. I can't help but wonder how bad an economy has to get before someone steps up & does something. Congress has a 9% approval rating, evidently I'm not the only one who thinks we need some leadership in America.

Why are you against getting America back on track? Who should take responsibility for the state of the economy? It seems I'm more to blame for speaking my mind than the people we elect to run the country.

How can I include Idaho & Otter with the nation & Bush? If I have to answer that I must have missed the part where Idaho is no longer a state. Idaho is a republican state & still part of the United States, last I heard. I think I mentioned the nation's infrastructure needing $2 trillion would include Idaho, bridges, roads, economy, housing, banking, & where does it end? If all Idaho needs is $280 million for roads I don't see it as an amount we couldn't come up with.

Evidently you think it's ok that there are hidden fees & credit card scams & they have no effect on the consumer/taxpayer. You never mention those things, just defend Bush? We don't as individuals interpret the same thing when we listen to the President. I guess I'm wrong for not hearing exactly the same thing you did or understanding it as you did? I see government waste or taxpayers being taken in credit card scams & I would do something about it. Maybe you wouldn't, maybe Otter wouldn't, maybe Bush wouldn't. I didn't say they had to do it personally, they're in a position to have somnebody look into it. I've called the AG several times, never gets anywhere? I've reported tax evasion, not campaign finance, tax evasion by individuals to the AG & they pass it along. Who knows where it goes.

I understand Bush's attitude & I thought he was on the defensive. If I were in his shoes & the country was in the shape it is, I'd be defending myself too. If I were in charge & America was coming apart, I would be accepting responsibilty. I guess that's the difference between Bush & myself. If I were President I would accept the responsibilty for my actions in the job I took. It all falls to the boss, even if he didn't make all the decisons. If he couldn't handle the responsibilty he shouldn't have run for the office. I guess that's the difference between myself & the way many Americans think today, I would as boss, take responsibilty for people working under me because that's how I was raised & what I learned through work & life. Employees under me might get ripped as well but I would have to take responsibilty as the boss.

Don't waste your time

Hey Selway Guy,

Welcome. GG tells you "all you do is defend Bush." Funny, your post hit Bush on everything that was bad.

GG doesn't read, he just rants. His second sentence - if all of Bush's plans are working why is he answering questions...? Aside from that being a ridiculous question - Bush said he and Congress had "failed" to get a bunch done in his 7+ years. He was admitting it - GG says Bush was telling us all was cool - and Bush was telling us it was not. He is wrong on most of his posts just in the accuracy of his points.

He would be fun to debate in terms of ideas or beliefs but he seldom reads what anyone else writes and just rants. You'll learn, or maybe you'll have better luck.

Defend Bush

I thought I was bashing Bush for all the things he was admitting were basically his fault - credit given for him being honest.

Does Mr. Greyghost ever read the post he is responding to, or watch the news conference, or does he just write the same stuff every time?

No answer needed I'm sure I'll learn.

Looks like a simple misunderstanding.

Words from a politician, {Larry Craig for example in resigning,} have more than one meaning, are written/said for that purpose. There's always a back door. That's what life has taught me.

We simply see things differently. I don't see that admitting to have failed to solve some of our difficult problems is the same as admitting the country & economy were headed in the wrong direction due to his & or Congress's failure. I would have accepted Bush taking responsibility had he said, He & Congress had failed which has resulted in the country & economy heading in the wrong direction which created problems we now face.

Again, I said, we all interpret things differently. To me, when the President reminds US that most of our money is insured in the banks & government will work to prop up the morgage institutions in trouble-just a few instances, suggests he is trying to convince us the economy is fine. To suggest most of the money in the banks is insured simply tells me, most is insured with taxpayer money, our money is insuring our money. It all comes back to US as taxpayers, We the People. I guess it's my bad in that I did say it all falls to the boss, we're the boss in the end. Can't blame Bush for being boss when we are. Only problem is convincing the rest of US to be the boss & hold our employees accoutable. It's fine if you don't feel the same in what he said or as I do in government accountability.

If banks fail where does the money to cover the losses come from? Like the $30 billion or whatever to bail out Bear Searns, from US? Where did the money for the stimulus come from? Is it added the the national debt which is virtual according to some? The problem with virtual is the word that follows in many cases is reality. In the end we all take the hit as American taxpayers. We pay people to run the country & we have the right to our opinion, should have?

It seems some complain more about my complaining about Bush & government than I complain about Bush & government. One guy can't take a joke so he recruits veterans because the word veteran was in the joke. I appoligized & said I wouldn't respond to his posts. He never apoligized but said he wouldn't respond, {OKAY} to my posts but here he is, like the energizer bunny, never misses a beat. I'd go get a shot or take a vitamin but I doubt this virus can be stopped that easily.

I backed off so he wouldn't hurt himself because he obviously went over the edge & now he won't back off. He's the blogger stalker. I think it's funny the way the GOP & democrats handle everything with spin & attacks. Bush & Cheney played the guilt card on Congress, don't provide funds for war based on their lies & Congress doesn't support the troops? I think the two parties are one of America's biggest problems, each more important to themselves than the country.

You have every right to your opinion & that's fine. If I misunderstood I'm sorry, we just took things differently. It's not that big of a deal. I admit I go over the top on these politicians, I just find that I can't believe what they say or they twist it to serve their needs at the time. If I'm not mistaken, Bush is suddenly willing to negotiate with Iran when recently he was bad mouthing Obama for the same thing?

If not mistaken Bush made a remark the other day about some internet sites, moveover.org may have been mentioned. A lot of Americans aren't happy with the way the nation is being run & we all have the right to say so. As far as I'm concerned you are absolutley right in your opinion & I appoligize if I came off as saying otherwise.

Beware the blogger stalker.

"...interpret things differently."

"...Bush is suddenly willing to negotiate with Iran when recently he was bad mouthing Obama for the same thing?" You are mistaken, and goodness gracious Mr. Greyghost, I'm thinking you really don't understand the issues. Bush and Obama are talking about two very distinctively different things here.

Just as Bush reassuring the nation that our monetary system was secure is very different from telling us the economy is fine. It is okay to have an opinion about all of this...but the opinion needs to be based on something that is factual, accurate, or correct, or it loses all credibility.

We can and should interpret perceptions differently, strategies differently, "what's good" differently. But there are some facts out there and we need to be accurate with them.

What the heck is blogger stalker? You write in code.

If you want to believe what a politician says, have at it.

Like Larry Craig & the resignation, you'll learn. Today's paper, Presence of US at Iran talks is a shift of policy. Shift of policy tells me what I already knew. When Obama & Hillary were battling for the nomination, Bush said something along the lines of never negotiating with the enemy as Obama suggested he would be willing to do. Politics? So we can believe everything they say? Can the rest of the world & does that leave US with any credibility? Facts, who, where, how, when, & do we each have the same? Right. Kennedy, Watergate, Vietnam, Nixon, Clinton, & how many volumes did I leave out?

After 7&1/2 years, Bush is just about ready to run the country. We elect these guys with no real experience, Gov., Congressman, lawyer, or whatever through campaign finance & we expect? How many times should we go through this on the job training program terrorist are going to use aganst US until we're broke? Campaign finance is ok with some but suggests to me we aren't getting who we need when we need them.

I never voted for Bush, after 9/11 I though he was on the right track going to Afghanistan. When he took off with the Iraq drums of war & WMD he lost me. Then he came out on the flight deck with major fighting was over in Iraq, suddenly he was a war president, & I knew we were in trouble. He's finally just about ready to admit he made some mistakes & take responsibilty but can a US President do that? Slow to move on the economy & admitting he along with Congress were at fault, isn't quite there. In his mind he knows, with the knowledge acquired in the last 7&1/2 years, & he could now be a good leader or better. Are rookies expected to win the superbowl.
How many years before becoming a pro does it take? Yet we expect somebody with no experience as President to come in & do it right? Bash him & you're the bad guy? We're all to blame for allowing politics to continue as they do.

My guess is Bush will always have to suggest he would do it all again even if he knows otherwise. Hindsight 20/20. Sure it's easy for me to say this now but I never did agree with going to Iraq. Would Bush really do it again if he had it over? Why do I bash politicians? I never get any indication I'm represented. I write letters, report crime, call the AG, & always get the same thing. They pass it along & it's never delt with. Between the news, current state of the union, & all I've been through, how could I have any confidence, & why wouldn't I kick them? We all live different lives & my experience has always been negative when it comes to polticians, they lie.

From the age of 19 I have witnessed crooked politics. Judges kiting checks, county attorneys in drug trade, drug dealers hired as guards at the state prison, & banking scandals of the eighties to name a few. Crime in banking reported in 1978 to Nebraska Gov. James Exon with AG Paul Douglas at the meeting only to have next Gov. Kerrey appoint the same man {reported for floating million $ notes to several banks} to state banking director. Paul Douglas later convicted & overturned on appeal. I could repeat the Watergate yada, yada, & campaign finance but it obviously wouldn't matter. Facts, there are a few you may not know & never will. Some of these movies we see about DC politics aren't as far from truth as some would believe.

Blogger stalker, inside joke, he'll respond directly.

That's funny

You write: "After 7&1/2 years, Bush is just about ready to run the country. We elect these guys with no real experience."

So would you support four more years now that Bush has the hang of it? Which is it - a career corrupt politician or corporate crook, or a guy "with no real experience?" GG, you don't like it either way.

1978? Nebraska?

I got clipped in elementary school playing kickball and the teacher did nothing. I think that was 1959....in Tulsa.

Where DOES most of the roadbuilding money come from then?

Google "sad clown", Fellini.

You want, want, want

"All I would expect from my representatives would be to go after money taxpayers already pay into fees we don't know we're being charged."

GG, call the Attorney General.

It's just like your reported corruption in Nebraska, with the dairy company, milk and pigs, all of the swindlers on your "Swindlers List," and you keep expecting the governor or your senator to fix it. It is not their job. You keep looking for justice in all the wrong places.

I know you have also reported all of the world's injustices to regulatory agencies and they have not acted. They are often understaffed and that is a problem - I will agree with you. But sometimes your view of a crime is not within the variances where they have the resources to work, which really means our elected reps don't have the time to dink around with it.

I think sometimes that you need to take some deep breaths.

i think Butch should have a nice Buckaroo breakfast and...

enjoy that rodeo!

i would've enjoyed some ham and flapjacks myself.

Bush and Obama negotiating with the enemy

Mr. Greyghost, you just have the facts all wrong. You can't say that Bush sorta said, and then compare with what Obama sorta said.

Government is more complicated than that. Senator Obama has said that he would meet with the President of Iran, or any foreign leader, without "pre-conditions," and without numerous other standard State Department particulars and bona fides.

That remains very different from President Bush's position, and in fact very different from Hillary Clinton's position.

Just like with Bush's press conference where he discussed the economy, banking, our monetary system, etc., I think you generalize dangerously on what is said, and then tend to write on what is just not accurate.

This is not to say that Bush or Obama is right or wrong - that is an opinion, but their stated and official positions are documented.

History repeating itself should be reason enough.

I didn't know they were doing vasectomies in 59. I wonder who the father of the kids are. Mama's baby, papa's maybe.
If only the teacher had stepped in, no clipping?

Okay, energizer bunny, two in one, goodness, gracious, oh my, code, appoligizes never given or accepted? This your brain on life, over & over & over. Can't keep up, take notes.

That's funny & still no clue? Which shell is the pea under?
Raise taxes to pay for roads & we'll know. It's what happens when you get? Forgetful, no wait, I remember 59 but not 78, or was it 87 but not 95? Those are highways. Better get some rest, it's mid afternoon & you can't possibly understand until after your nap. Go ahead & try.

Are you sadists plesured YET?

I thought Liberty1611 was a bowel impairment.

Almost.

It's a weekend, enjoy it no matter how much big brother stinks it up.

I have 47.33 total in Pioneer midranges in limbo.

after UPS franchisees and independent agents have tacked imaginary fees on at the sellers' end THREE times. EATING the entire cost of a small receiver for a lady that bent over backwards to help only to basically take that guff because she had a conscious bone in her body and felt it was late getting out--was that the actions of a reputable company or it's agents? LAST year I lost out on a private purchase becasue of thet!

FedEx, USPS and even DHL don't pull that garbage. I've nearly had it with UPS.

Learning from the past

I have learned that when everything stinks you may need to look very close for the source. Something to think about Ghostie.

Calling names or just passing

along your old lessons? You learned through you're own experience that you were the source? I thinking you just admitted what we knew all along. Could you please step back or downwind, thanks. The rest of he world shouldn't have to suffer knowing you may have learned from old lessons, just won't do anythng to correct the problem. Only problem is that no matter where you are, somebody is catching that nasty smell from upwind.

If you think you can take it, I'll finish the firemen joke. I'd hate to see you stink it up anymore than you already have so I won't, unless you keep calling names. We wouldn't want you're security blankie to come to your aid, proving? Never mind, another joke, another day.

If you're going to call names, try to man up with something good, something that cuts. Did you grow up with a house full of older sisters? I'll bet you could make a lot of money on ebay if you sold your doll collection.

I see the problem

"man up."

"firemen."

"House full of older sisters."

"doll collection."

Maybe, just maybe no one investigates all of the graft and corruption you cite because of your sexist speech.

Or maybe it is because you never answer serious questions or provide the evidence requested. SLG asked you a couple of questions...did you not read his posts or have you no answers?

Why answer non-questions?

Throw crap back. Works.

There is no reason to answer "non-questions."

The post was about actual questions relevent to a post going unanswered.

That's not journalistic.

It doesn't even quite make sense...que?

UPS returned the midrange I found...they're going USPS now.

At this point for my experience I would recommend anybody but UPS but I have one more Pioneer and they have it too.

How is it the person so worried about name calling

has nothing to say about the name I'm being called yet goes off the deep end as to why I wouldn't respond to the load of crap beng asked? Who responded to who? Shorts all bunched up again? Is your little friend taking a beating, needs some support?

Are these two people really just one person or maybe sitting side by side, holding hands? Always have to run to each other in support or crawl to someone else for support. I see all kinds of names on this blog, go for it. Just depends on you they're after.

Maybe, just maybe, goodness gracious, oh my, & all the rest of the nice language, the same by both so afraid of name calling, is just a put on? Can't take a joke & when someone kicks either of them around, the other comes a running.

Anybody can see you're being baited & going for it. Leave it alone & it goes away. Scratch every bite not realizing it only ithces worse the more you scratch. Claimed he would quit posting responses & here he is? There is a name for that as well.

Let's hear it. Which one will it be next? How about a duet, as if we haven't already had one? Stir it up & run for help.
Veterans, veterans, you made a joke about them & I'm telling. Most verterans would laugh.

Names?

What name are you being called? Oh, yeah, another question you won't answer...?

"...load of crap being asked...?" I think you said something about a teacher asserting we should not learn from the past and someone, maybe SLG asked about it - you didn't answer. Must have been a "load of crap."

I think you were asked about whether you preferred an experienced politician or a newby, based upon some statements you wrote about Bush now being ready for the job after 7 years....is that the "load of crap" you refer to?

I remember in one of our very first exchanges I asked you about your interest in Col. Mosby, and you never answered that question either. Why is that a crap question?

Those seem like reasonable questions, debate, discussion, no accusations, just what these forums are for. But strangely you don't answer them.

No matter, I've sorta determined you're all blow and no go...bluster, insult women, sexist language, insult vets, always writes about "kicking," someone around, etc.

No need to finish your joke, the shoe fits.

Yjwnwmvm rtermo golejgjiim wassem tyuuopmn etc

Iron your own shirts.

There he goes, over the edge again.

I appoligized when he went over the edge last time so as to prevent something terrible from happening yet he keeps coming back for more. Go ahead & freak out, nobody cares.
If he shoots himself or somebody else, the Statesman should have seen it coming, I did.

Insulted veterans? Just one guy who claims to be a veteran yet runs for help when he can't take a joke. We now know why Bush hasn't sent out the invitation.

Nobody owes an explanation knowing it never would reach the mind of sane person. As if the guy answers any questions asked of him.

Does anybody know who Col. Mosby is? Is this a trick question involving Moby Dick? I don't know the guy & don't recall ever having any interest. Where does this stuff come from?

Names? Why would this guy get exited about something between two other people on a blog? Is it really just one guy, the same guy? A lot of similarities, goodness gracious, oh my, & a list perpetual. I guess he didn't like the line about holding hands or was it the depends again?

I guess everybody doesn't answer to the major anymore & he has a tough time adjusting. Maybe someone should explain that just because he served in the military, so he says, he doesn't have the right to tell US citizens what to do, not do, or how to think. There is a differnce. Fighting for our freedom & rights doesn't then give the power to tell US what our rights are because he served.

Good for the major if he thinks he stopped communism in Vietnam, dream on about stopping terror. I imagine the major
is already writing a vitory speech on Iraq for Bush in hopes for a pat on the back, atta boy. Major fighting is over, again. No doubt thought Bush was referring to the major himself the first time Bush claimed major fighting was over. As if it were victory with our one & only deserving credit.
Good thing for depends.

No American should answer to just any major disappointment who demands we should. Who does the major think he is?

Moby Dick...

You ARE kidding, right? Of course he asked you about Mosby.

Mosby was "the Grey Ghost." You don't even know your namesake from U.S. history?

Col. John Singleton Mosby of Mosby's Rangers (or Mosby's Raiders) in the Civil War - I think they fought mostly in the Shenandoah valley.

He was called the Grey Ghost because he would hit and disappear. The grey part was because he was in the Confederate Army...and they wore grey uniforms.

Mosby was a bit like Francis Marion - the Swamp Fox, but I may have wasted my time telling you about him...

Wow, I'm remembering history classes and test questions now from decades ago.

Ghostie, who the heck is the "major" you are writing about? What rights has he told you about that you have because he served? Your writing is pretty confusing you know...

You have read Moby Dick, now haven't you?

Too funny

It never occurred to me SLG that GG didn't know who Mosby was. I thought he had some historical fascination with him, or had traveled some of the battlefields, and he never would answer my question - I was interested.

Now I know....too funny. And sad.

PS Tomlin, do you actually HAVE a job or all day to kill?

I thought you knew

I am self-employed. I spend much of the day in my office at the keyboard. I am a writer, and take regular breaks from my work writing to play on a half-dozen newspaper blogs. Ten minutes every two hours or so does it. Of course the afternoon bike ride helps.

Usually I fish or golf on Thursdays unless I have a big project to complete...eh, like today. Clients, editors, publishers...yikes, gotta go.

So now you know.

You should fire yourself and take the UI to go look to work.

Could've been a Rolls-Royce too for all I'd know, so?

It's a nickname for a wonderful breed of dog. Fine.

Weims are called greyghost.

The major knew I raised Weims from a previous post & I think I mentioned having the name over twenty years. Might be a namesake if Mosby was where I got it, but that isn't the case. Jumping to conclusions? When you can suddenly read somebodies else's mind, you'll be in the money. Until then try to control yourself.

You ARE kidding, right. Bet you had to change shorts after that.

How many people cared when Mosby was mentioned & who the major was referring to? I didn't & suddenly it is of some major importance? Not. I asked, my bad. I should have known it would have you both changing shorts, ---- all over yoursleves again.

Maybe Mosby matters to you but I could still give a rat's
---. Mosby can be your grey ghost but he's not mine, never was, never will be. Mosby was no hero of mine, never stood out in history as far as I was concerned, why would I think about him?

The Civil War happened way back before 1978 yet from what I understand 1978 was so long ago it doesn't matter. If history is so important then why only when it pertains to what you or the major suggest? Was 1978 just a bad year or was it because I mentioned it? We can leave it out of history all together you feel the need. Banking scandals of the eighties happened in Nebraska even though someone tried to stop it in 1978. I suppose we can say iot never happened, never learned from it so I guess it is forgotten.

Banking scandals in the eighties don't matter when banking is in the news everyday in 2008? Bear Stearns, Fannie & Freddie? The economy, fuel prices, foreclosures, & indictments but banking doesn't matter? The Civil War does because of some guy called the grey ghost who you think is my namesake?

Why would the Civil War matter when history in the making doesn't? Are we suddenly going to get into the slave trade again? Did Montana break away from the union? I didn't claim to be Mosby so why would you assume? Just because somebody else thought about Mosby the rest of the world is wrong in not remembering. You didn't.

Your words,

Wow, I'm remembering history classes and test questions now from decades ago.

You never gave a thought to who Mosby was until? I'm to understand you knew when the major asked the first time what he meant but just today:

Wow, I'm remembering history classes and test questions now from decades ago.

Why didn't you make a big deal of it sooner? I guess everybody is suppose to jump at every chance, raise their hand, & hope the teacher calls on them.

Tell me you guys aren't a little closer than the blog. Have fun with the history lessons but remember, can't rewrite it to fit your needs. Just like Vietnam, Nixon, Bush & Iraq, it's history.

You didn't know about Major Tomlin? Communism didn't take over in Vietnam thanks to Major Tomlin. He isn't going to like you anymore. Just think, someday in a hundred years, somebody will be giving some unsuspecting guy a bad time because they didn't know who Major Tomlin was & the roll he played in keeping communism out of Vietnam. We better give the Major a name like greyghost but better. I'll let you guys come up with a name, making a hero of the Major. That's funny.

Try to give it a rest. Why two people are so uptight about a joke is, well it depends. Get it, depends.

Maybe the major only let the kind commies into Nam...

Maybe he is one, kind, commie, or just a nice guy working

for the other side? Explains why everything works so well in the good old US of A & support in a failing war on terror. We still haven't won the war on drugs, how will we beat terror? They did infiltrate our nuclear weapons research way back in the Civil War days when Mosby was playing hide & seek. Tricky devils. Who knows American history better than the enemy?

Boo, now you see him, now you don't. Fruit is good for you, but not in bed. Fruit in bed is two of a kind? Aids, it's the lord's way of punishing them? Maybe, or just an abbreviation for another Iowan discovers sex.
